“
With the passing of time, the echoes of our school life will grow fainter and fainter, and then die away. Gone forever will be the routine of school life, the fun we had, and the friends we made. It is the hope of the 1959-1960 Redside staff that, as you glance through this book in the years to come, you will recapture those 9 6 O moments — and the echoes will begin again. Maupin, Oregon We, the Associated Student Body would like to dedicate our 1959-60 Redside Yearbook in memory of Donnie Brown. He was on our School Board and took an active interest in our school sports and other activities. This dedication is in honor of him and others who have devoted their time, money, and interest to our school and its 2 activities. faculty OREGON HISTORY SHER ART BRIDGE ON THIS SITE THE ANCIENT INDIAN TRAIL CROSSED THE DESCHUTtS RIVER WHERE THE EARLIEST PIONEERS FLOATED THEIR WAGONS. THE FIRST BRIDGE WAS BUILT BY JOHN Y TODD IN 1660. IN 1868 THE FIRST POST OFFICE IN WASCO COUNTY WAS ESTABLISHED. J. H. SHERAJT ACQUIRED THE PROPERTY SOON AFTERWARDS AND CONSTRUCTED A 13 ROOM HOTEL AND LIVERY STABLE AND IMPROVED THE TOLL ROAD ON BOTH SIDES OF THE DESCHUTES CANYON. HE MAINTAINED THE ROAD WITH INDIAN LABOR FROM BAKEO,VEN TO THE DALLES. SlIERAR’S BRIDGE AND TOLL ROAD WAS THE GATEWAY TO THE VAST TERRITORY OF CENTRAL OREGON. THE BUILDING OF THE RAILROADS THROUGH THE DESCHUTES CANYON IN 1911 ENDED THE IMPORTANCE OF SHERAR'S BRIDGE AND THE ROAD WAS LITTLE USED UNTIL THE RECONSTRUCTION OF THE HIGHWAY IN RECENT YEARS. . 53 91 m M Principal J. M. Tom Thayer, a past member of our faculty for three years, currently teaching at David Douglas High School in Portland, was the guest speaker. Other guests were Mrs. Thayer, Reverend and Mrs. Leubke of Tygh Valley, and members of the schools staff. Mr. Thayer spoke on the comparison of larger schools such as David Douglas with schools the size of our own. He stated that the teaching staffs here were comparable to those of much larger city schools and that our students are not any less prepared. Mr. Thayer gave a run down of athletics from David Douglas this past year, and ended with the advice that students everywhere, need the ill to win . Leanna Morris read the class prophecy for the graduating class, Marion Metcalf read the history, and Helen Bales read the class will. Climbing up the Mountain , was sung by the Four Sharps and a Flat, Mr. C. Holmes sang two Irish numbers, and Janice Maurer ended the program with a solo, Tender Love and Care . Junior-Senior Prom Mardi Gras was the theme of the Junior-Senior Prom held on April 6th in the High School Cafetorium. Each couple made a grand entrance through the blue crepe paper hallway with the star speckled ceiling. Once inside, all eyes glanced at the multi-colored serpentine and paper mask ceiling, the black silhouettes and confetti-filled balloons, and the traditional Mardi Gras noisemakers. The center attraction was the royal throne. Over it hung a huge golden crown on which appeared Mardi Gras in red letters. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Queen Marge Hull and King John Wilson. Last year's royalty, Jo Webb and Billy Hunt were on hand to crown the new rulers of the Prom. Queen Marge and King John danced to the music of The Dreamers from The Dalles. As the last couples left, a floor covered with confetti reflected the enjoyment of all who attended. 55 Hit be Ceelie f Whot you doin'? Director. Prompter, But Mah! Wall Wal! Rosie Belle??? .. Cherry Sweetheart Portrait by Elite Studios of The Dalles On April 29, 1960, Sharon Lee Parman was chosen from a group of three Princesses to reign as Cherry Sweetheart. Earlier in the month, Princess Karen Kane of Mosier, Princess Linda Miller of The Dalles, and our own Princess Sharon were selected by a group of judges. The girls were all High School Seniors with a grade-point average of 2. 5 or higher. On the day of selection, the three princesses were interviewed; the winner was announced at a luncheon attended by the candidates and their parents. Sharon was presented with a wardrobe, three pieces of luggage, and of course, the sparkling crown of a Cherry Sweetheart. She will travel in the Pacific Northwest to promote the growing Cherry Industry of Wasco County. We are extremely proud of Sharon, the first Cherry Sweetheart. 63 Classes Mural in Gym Painted by, Bob Estes and Bob Iverson. Linda Sharon Marion Patty Dixie . V.
