FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1939, a special branch of the family tree of MHS sprouted fifteen tender, green buds. But the young shoots were ''green'' for cnly a week or two while they yesed the upperclassmen during the traditional freshmen week. The neophytes in funny clothes were made to walk the plank, and were pgd-dled, and pushed and punished, but by the end of the week the fifteen took their places with the best men. Then the group elected officers, with Miss Sprague as helpful adviser. Fred Schaufelberger filled the president's boots, Kieth Alsup acted as vice-president, Grace Stout kept a record of the minutes, Dick Snodgrass guarded our financial assets, and Raymond Doane receiving the worthy position as Sergeant-at-arms. Freshmen work in the high school carnival produced two booths and the dramatic talent did those two hilarious comedies, ''Back Seat Driving, and Abie and Cutie , a picture of romance. The football turnouts included gridiron men, Fred Schaufelberger, only freshman letter-winner, Dick Snodgrass, Kieth Alsup, Merle Britton, and Raymond Doane. And when basketball turnouts were started our freshmen class produced that little hero from Kent, Roger (Jitterbug) Justesen, who played first-string ball in two major games. The second team squad claimed Fred as a regular. Our freshmen students are no longer greenies . We've worked and played, and studied and maybe flunked, but our fifteen members have left their footprints in the sidewalks of Maupin's fame and fortune. f i 1

SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY In the year of J938 thirty-five freshmen ■walked up the steps of Maupin High School with four long years ahead of them. This was the largest class ever to enter Mau pin High School. We had the usual initiation of a shock from a wired chair, drinking milk from a bottle with a nipple on it, boys wearing girl’s clothes and visa versa, carrying a raw egg around all day (they were supposed to be raw), and being painted up like Fiji Islanders. Innumerable times we said I am a freshman and I am dumb and sang How Green I Am . Just nine of us freshmen started the first grade together nine years before. The others joined from year to year. There were several changes during and between the school years but the total remained practically the same. As freshmen we played a successful part in the carnival. Our side show brought in more money than any other side show. The sophomores also played an active part in the carnival this year, with a baby show as our special attraction. We chose Miss Kaiser as our class adviser. Fifteen Sophomores are on the paper staff and two Sophomores are advertising managers on the Student Body Staff. We have several Sophomores in the High School Band and we are proud to say that one of our members, Rex Snodgrass, got an All-Star award in the tournament this year.
