SENIOR CLASS HISTORY On September 6, 1936, Professor T. P. Otto came dashing from his office in search of the source of a terrible uproar in the halls of Maupin High School. Of course, as you have probably guessed, ii was just the annual class of freshies . There were twenty in this promising looking group. They were Murl Addington, La Vonne Alsup, Donna Ashley, Jack Bothwell, Shelia Bourland, Jack Britton, Glenn Chastain, Eleanor Cunningham, Elwin Doty, Mary Helen Fargher, Jennie Mae Gerity, Mae Greene, Gertrude Kirsch, Gayle Mayhew, Jeanne Mayhew, Zelma Rose, Virginia Savage, Don Stogsdill, Harvey Whitlock and Jean Lease. The freshman year passed rather uneventfully as most freshman years do. The next fall the same group composed the Sophomore class except for Eleanor Cunningham and Jean Lease. Seven new members joined our class at this time. There were six girls and one boy. The girls were Gladys Logsdon, Ardith Tollman, Dorothy Stark, Viola Beebe, Helen Kelly, and last but not least our Irish Queen and artist, May Joyce. The boy was none other than our blond Romeo, Lawrence Gabel, from Wapinitia. Viola Beebe was dropped a short time later. It was during this year that five Sophomore girls were organized into a group which was called the Prairie Janes . They entertained at assemblies and various meetings. The group was composed of Gladys Logsdon, Shelia Bourland, Donna Ashley, Jennie Mae Gerity, and Dorothy Stark. They sang to guitar accompaniment. Three of our boys received recognition in sports this year. They were Gayle Mayhew, Jack Bothwell, and Elwin (Gotch) Doty. The girls as well as the boys represented our class in sports. The girls who earned letters were: Shelia Eourland, Mae Greene, Jeanne Mayhew, May Joyce, and Helen Kelly. The Sophomores took part in the first annual Carnival and other school activities throughout the school year. At the beginning of our third and Junior year the class was minus Dorothy Stark, Ardith Tollman, Zelma Rose and Jack Bothwell. Eleanor Cunningham re- turned to take he: Junior year at Maupin Wycna Miller, our class poet, and tha-red-headed basketball all-star, LoweL Gilbert, were also enrolled in our class at that time. This was the year the class began tf make a real showing in Maupin High School. We not only took part in al| school activities but sponsored a barn dance and gave a Prom, in honor of the Senior Class, using Ferdinand the Bull as our theme. Paintings of Ferdinand and many flowers of all kinds were used in decorat ing the gymnasium. The same group earned letters as Juniors also Eleanor Cunningham, Lowell Gilbert, and Don Stogsdill. We were very proud to have five mem-! bers of the Junior class elected student body officers. They were Stella Bourland, vice-president; Gertrude Kirsch, secretary; Mae Greene, treasurer; Gayle Mayhew, sergeant-at-arms, and Elwin Doty, advertising manager. In the fall of 1939 we again returned to take the fourth and last step to our High School education as the Senior class. But much to our disappointment two of our classmates were missing, Gladys Logsdon and Eleanor Cunningham. Eut we were very glad to welcome four new members into the class. They were: Sophie Boen, Betty Helen Justesen, Henrietta Peetz, and Eldon Nielson, making up our present class of twenty-four. Letters were awarded to Lowell Gilbert, Gayle Mayhew, Glenn Chastain, Elwin Doty, Don Stogsdill, and Lawrence Gable. At this time we found we had two basket-ball stars in our class. Gayle Mayhew and Lowell Gilbert were placed on both the County and Sub-Disirict All-Star teams. Elwin Doty and Lawrence Gable were first string players this year. Among our feminine athletes we found the names of Mae Greene, Helen Kelly, Sheila Bourland, Jennie Mae Gerity, Jeanne Mayhew, Sophie Boen, Mae Joyce and LaVonne Alsup. These girls all found places on the first string Basketball team. At a recent class meeting we chose (Continued on page 23) [ 14 ]

SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY In the year of J938 thirty-five freshmen ■walked up the steps of Maupin High School with four long years ahead of them. This was the largest class ever to enter Mau pin High School. We had the usual initiation of a shock from a wired chair, drinking milk from a bottle with a nipple on it, boys wearing girl’s clothes and visa versa, carrying a raw egg around all day (they were supposed to be raw), and being painted up like Fiji Islanders. Innumerable times we said I am a freshman and I am dumb and sang How Green I Am . Just nine of us freshmen started the first grade together nine years before. The others joined from year to year. There were several changes during and between the school years but the total remained practically the same. As freshmen we played a successful part in the carnival. Our side show brought in more money than any other side show. The sophomores also played an active part in the carnival this year, with a baby show as our special attraction. We chose Miss Kaiser as our class adviser. Fifteen Sophomores are on the paper staff and two Sophomores are advertising managers on the Student Body Staff. We have several Sophomores in the High School Band and we are proud to say that one of our members, Rex Snodgrass, got an All-Star award in the tournament this year.
