S|mtHi ('hiss Plays ★ In our Speech Class we cover every phase of speaking, including a unit on Dramatics. During this unit we have given a three act play and several one act plays. The three-act play was a mystery entitled, The Green Light , by Robert St. Clair, directed by Mrs. Monger. The characters were as follows: Miss Mattie, the sleeper, Mary Helen Fargher; Dr. Spaulding, her physician, Gar Mayhew; Mary Marston, her niece, Jeanne Mayhew; Jerome Forrester, her nephew, Elwin Doty; Kitty Corey, a novelist, Gertrude Kirsch; Donald Rhodes, a newspaper reporter, Gayle Mayhew; Trinka Anderson, a Norwegian maid, Verna Lee Fischer; Aesop, the caretaker, LaVonne Alsup; Madame Zonda, a mystic, Shelia Bourland; The Phantom Spinster, Unknown. Time, the present. This play was the first mystery play io have been given in Maupin High School for several years. The play proved to be a success. I aier our class entered the Mid-Columbia One-Act Play Contest sponsored by The Dalles High School. This time we chose a tragedy, entitled, Jacob Comes Heme by William Kozlenko, which was also directed by Mrs. Monger. The characters were as follows: Liese Braun, the daughter, Betty Helen Justesen; Magda Braun, her mother, Amy Lou van Laanen; Joseph Braun, her grandfather, Elwin Doty; Hulda, Magda's sister, Jennie Mae Gerity; Rudolf Huber, Joseph's friend, Kieth DeCourcy; The soldier, Andy Smith. Time, the present. Place, Berlin, Germany. We won second place in the contest, with Amy Lou van Laanen receiving honorable mention in the individual characterization. Quoting from The Dalles Chronicle: The cast of 'Jacob Comes Home' turned in a truly magnificent performance, depicting characters very difficult for youth to portray . Our field trip this year was a trip to Portland where we visited a meeting of the City Council, Oregonian, Court Session, KGW radio station and a stage play. We had one exchange assembly with The Dalles. Alumni Soeiuh ★ (Continued from page 7) Ruth Brown married Cecil Ashley shortly after her graduation in '35. They have made their home in Bakeoven.
