THE GOLDEN M The Annual of Maupin High School, District 84, Wasco County, Maupin, Oregon. The staff hopes this production will touch, however lightly, through word and picture, all phases of school life—may you smile a little—yet ever see the path of progress through these pages. ★ DEDICATION The Alumni Each spring, from the doors of Maupin High School a line of young men and women pass from our school, each to find a place in the world. Up until then the high school classes were held in the west room of the present grade school building with only one teacher. The first year high school was held in the present building there were two teachers and less than twenty students. Since that time it is easy to see Maupin High School has made many advancements not only in the number of the student body but in equipment and recognition among other schools. Since 1924 Maupin High School has had many graduates. It would be difficult for us to mention them all in the limited space we have here. Some have endeavored to further their education in some higher institution, while others have settled down to farming or in some private business. Lorraine Stovall Woodside stood alone in the class of 1924. Her first three years of high school were spent in the grade school building. (Continued on page 10) [ 7 ] The School Board ★ In addition to the regular duties ot overseeing the annual business of the district, the school board has supervised many valuable improvements. Among them made during this year were the completion of the rock retaining wall on the southwest side of the school grounds, and the turfing of the football field, with an adequate watering system installed for the upkeep of the field. The building was completely renovated, with an improved lighting system in the gym for more efficient service. The new equipment purchased included: Typewriters, science equipment, adjustable shelves, one hundred new books and fifteen magazine subscriptions for the newly located library. These improvements have assisted in retaining the school's membership in The Northwest Association of Secondary and Higher Schools; this membership having been attained for the first time last year. ★ [8] ( J. Otto came dashing from his office in search of the source of a terrible uproar in the halls of Maupin High School. Of course, as you have probably guessed, ii was just the annual class of freshies . There were twenty in this promising looking group. They were Murl Addington, La Vonne Alsup, Donna Ashley, Jack Bothwell, Shelia Bourland, Jack Britton, Glenn Chastain, Eleanor Cunningham, Elwin Doty, Mary Helen Fargher, Jennie Mae Gerity, Mae Greene, Gertrude Kirsch, Gayle Mayhew, Jeanne Mayhew, Zelma Rose, Virginia Savage, Don Stogsdill, Harvey Whitlock and Jean Lease. The freshman year passed rather uneventfully as most freshman years do. The next fall the same group composed the Sophomore class except for Eleanor Cunningham and Jean Lease. Seven new members joined our class at this time. There were six girls and one boy. The girls were Gladys Logsdon, Ardith Tollman, Dorothy Stark, Viola Beebe, Helen Kelly, and last but not least our Irish Queen and artist, May Joyce. The boy was none other than our blond Romeo, Lawrence Gabel, from Wapinitia. Viola Beebe was dropped a short time later. It was during this year that five Sophomore girls were organized into a group which was called the Prairie Janes . They entertained at assemblies and various meetings. The group was composed of Gladys Logsdon, Shelia Bourland, Donna Ashley, Jennie Mae Gerity, and Dorothy Stark. They sang to guitar accompaniment. Three of our boys received recognition in sports this year. They were Gayle Mayhew, Jack Bothwell, and Elwin (Gotch) Doty. The girls as well as the boys represented our class in sports. The girls who earned letters were: Shelia Eourland, Mae Greene, Jeanne Mayhew, May Joyce, and Helen Kelly. The Sophomores took part in the first annual Carnival and other school activities throughout the school year. At the beginning of our third and Junior year the class was minus Dorothy Stark, Ardith Tollman, Zelma Rose and Jack Bothwell. Eleanor Cunningham re- turned to take he: Junior year at Maupin Wycna Miller, our class poet, and tha-red-headed basketball all-star, LoweL Gilbert, were also enrolled in our class at that time. This was the year the class began tf make a real showing in Maupin High School. We not only took part in al| school activities but sponsored a barn dance and gave a Prom, in honor of the Senior Class, using Ferdinand the Bull as our theme. Paintings of Ferdinand and many flowers of all kinds were used in decorat ing the gymnasium. The same group earned letters as Juniors also Eleanor Cunningham, Lowell Gilbert, and Don Stogsdill. We were very proud to have five mem-! bers of the Junior class elected student body officers. They were Stella Bourland, vice-president; Gertrude Kirsch, secretary; Mae Greene, treasurer; Gayle Mayhew, sergeant-at-arms, and Elwin Doty, advertising manager. In the fall of 1939 we again returned to take the fourth and last step to our High School education as the Senior class. But much to our disappointment two of our classmates were missing, Gladys Logsdon and Eleanor Cunningham. Eut we were very glad to welcome four new members into the class. They were: Sophie Boen, Betty Helen Justesen, Henrietta Peetz, and Eldon Nielson, making up our present class of twenty-four. Letters were awarded to Lowell Gilbert, Gayle Mayhew, Glenn Chastain, Elwin Doty, Don Stogsdill, and Lawrence Gable. At this time we found we had two basket-ball stars in our class. Gayle Mayhew and Lowell Gilbert were placed on both the County and Sub-Disirict All-Star teams. Elwin Doty and Lawrence Gable were first string players this year. Among our feminine athletes we found the names of Mae Greene, Helen Kelly, Sheila Bourland, Jennie Mae Gerity, Jeanne Mayhew, Sophie Boen, Mae Joyce and LaVonne Alsup. These girls all found places on the first string Basketball team. Thirteen of these were rom Tygh Valley and Wamic, and one om Wapinitia. Within a few weeks iree of this number, Vernon Larson, Bernard and Berlyn Iverson, dropped ut. About this time came Mauro Duca, ur football hero. Later he and Harold oyner both left. At the beginning of the year in 1938 •ve found we had lost one of our last fear's number, Merril Maxwell. Near the end of the year, however, James Forman entered making our total number twenty. He dropped out early the next year. Our Junior year saw two new members from Wapinitia, Opal Cox and Le-land McCoy. Gene Davis now left us to attend Park Rose. At present we have twelve boys and eight girls with a total of twenty pupils. This class is now looking forward to giving the annual Barn Dance and the Senior Prom. SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY In the year of J938 thirty-five freshmen ■walked up the steps of Maupin High School with four long years ahead of them. This was the largest class ever to enter Mau pin High School. We had the usual initiation of a shock from a wired chair, drinking milk from a bottle with a nipple on it, boys wearing girl’s clothes and visa versa, carrying a raw egg around all day (they were supposed to be raw), and being painted up like Fiji Islanders. Innumerable times we said I am a freshman and I am dumb and sang How Green I Am . Just nine of us freshmen started the first grade together nine years before. The others joined from year to year. There were several changes during and between the school years but the total remained practically the same. As freshmen we played a successful part in the carnival. Our side show brought in more money than any other side show. The sophomores also played an active part in the carnival this year, with a baby show as our special attraction. We chose Miss Kaiser as our class adviser. Fifteen Sophomores are on the paper staff and two Sophomores are advertising managers on the Student Body Staff. We have several Sophomores in the High School Band and we are proud to say that one of our members, Rex Snodgrass, got an All-Star award in the tournament this year. FRESHMAN CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1939, a special branch of the family tree of MHS sprouted fifteen tender, green buds. But the young shoots were ''green'' for cnly a week or two while they yesed the upperclassmen during the traditional freshmen week. The neophytes in funny clothes were made to walk the plank, and were pgd-dled, and pushed and punished, but by the end of the week the fifteen took their places with the best men. Then the group elected officers, with Miss Sprague as helpful adviser. Fred Schaufelberger filled the president's boots, Kieth Alsup acted as vice-president, Grace Stout kept a record of the minutes, Dick Snodgrass guarded our financial assets, and Raymond Doane receiving the worthy position as Sergeant-at-arms. Freshmen work in the high school carnival produced two booths and the dramatic talent did those two hilarious comedies, ''Back Seat Driving, and Abie and Cutie , a picture of romance. The football turnouts included gridiron men, Fred Schaufelberger, only freshman letter-winner, Dick Snodgrass, Kieth Alsup, Merle Britton, and Raymond Doane. And when basketball turnouts were started our freshmen class produced that little hero from Kent, Roger (Jitterbug) Justesen, who played first-string ball in two major games. The second team squad claimed Fred as a regular. Our freshmen students are no longer greenies . We've worked and played, and studied and maybe flunked, but our fifteen members have left their footprints in the sidewalks of Maupin's fame and fortune. f i 1 SENIOR ORITUARY NAME NICKNAME DESCRIPTION CAUSE OF DEATH Don Stogsdill Highpockets Quiet Hi-Life Jennie Mae Gerity Shorty Pleasant Algebra Shelia Eourland Shelly Peppy Broken Heart Mae Greene Freckles Athletic No Basketball Jeanne May hew Jeanie Vivacious Hominy Henrietta Peetz Henny Friendly Debate Elwin Doty Gotch Argumentative No Sleep Harvev Whitlock Toots Energetic Record Attendance Mary Helen Fargher Harry Thoughtful Hugh Know LaVonne Alsup Aesop Sincere The Annual Eldon Nielson Romeo Sheik A true gal Gayle Mayhew Scooter Loquacious No-Soap Glenn Chastain Chas Healthy Tobogganing Lowell Gilbert Gilmore Witty A Good Joke Donna Ashley Donie Happy Snakes Sophie Boen Soapy Effervescent School Betty Helen Justesen Butcher-boy Gay Jitterbugging Helen Kelly Little Audrey Mischievous Had to Study Wyona Miller Nonie Dreamy Nightmare Virginia Savage V. We also talked about our Sneak-Day trip. Our class has been very active this year in all student body activities. Gayle Mayhew acts as student body President; Don Stogsdill as Vice-President, Jeanne Mayhew as Secretary and Mae Greene as Treasurer. We are now nearing the end of our high school career. May we say here that it has been a very happy one. Some among us will, no doubt, distinguish themselves in this great world and some of us will live the lives of normal, happy citizens, but, wherever we are we will always cherish the memory of Maupin Hi. ★ SOPHOMORE CLASS HISTORY (Continued from page 16) So far we have had two very successful years and each year that passed we are a little more adapted to the routine of the school and we hope to continue to carry on the traditions of good old Maupin High. These four years that looked so long when we started are growing shorter and shorter. Football The football season of 1939 was not as successful as we had hoped it would be. The team looked promising at first but the odds seemed to be against them. The boys had a lot of fight until the last minute and then they took their defeats with a smile. It, of course, was very discouraging for the boys to face defeat from Dufur the first game and then to tie them the second. We won two games from Madras and lost games to Dufur, Redmond, Arlington and Klickitat. The team is losing a few seniors whose absence will be greatly felt next fall. They are: Elwin Doty, Gayle Mayhew, Don Stogsdill, Lawrence Gable and Glenn Chastain. The prospects are very good for a winning team next year, with several first stringers coming back and several strong reserves as well as a promising group of freshmen coming in. The following lettermen coming back next season are: Gar Mayhew, Rex Snodgrass, Verl Confer, Paul DeCourcy, Keith DeCourcy, Brenton Driver, Norman Duncan and Clarence Brown. There are also many promising reserves such as, Merle Britton, Vern Hackler, Joe Woodcock and Fred Schaufelberger. The coach and boys are working hard for a winning team next fall. Basketball The Redsides have had a very successful year in pulling down the victories and we are very proud of them. They brought a great deal of honor to our school by running close to St. Mary's for first place, and beating the other teams for a second place in the County Tournament. There were 16 games this season and Maupin Redsides won 11. They were second place winners in both the County and the Sub-District Tournaments, defeating the strong Parkdale and Grass Valley teams in the Sub-District. The seniors who are leaving the Red-sides are: Lowell Gilbert; Captain, Gayle Mayhew, Elwin Doty, Lawrence Gable and Glenn Chastain. Maupin had the unique distinction of placing their entire starting line-up on the Wasco County All-Star team. Gar Mayhew, Gayle Mayhew, Verl Confer, Rex Snodgrass and Lowell Gilbert all being selected for what is believed to be a county and state record. Gayle Mayhew and Lowell Gilbert brought us additional distinction by winning places cn the All-Star Sub-District team. Track Prospects for a successful season in track are good. Maupin will have a strong team entered in the Hill Military Relays and several other meets. With the entire 1939 Wasco County High School championships team intact for this season, the Maupin Redsides are strong favorites to repeat last year's performance as Captain Elwin Doty, Verl Confer, Gar Mayhew, Keith De-Courcy, Harvey Whitlock, and Rex Snodgrass, carried away the honors of the meet for Maupin by winning first in practically all the events. Beys' and Girls' Table Tennis A great deal of interest has been shown in table tennis this year. After the tryouts a team was selected to represent the school in a match with The Dalles High School. The team consists of: Lowell Gilbert, GRETA’S Ladies’ Wearing Apparel Phone 28 The Dalles, Oregon u K. C. Any Student Body member who is interested may turn out for the paper staff. This year nearly half of the school turned out but not everyone received a position on the staff. The paper has always paid all its own expenses and this year a profit of about $75 was announced. The Band The present Maupin Band was organized under the direction of Dallas Norton seven years ago. Only three of the original members are now playing, Gar Mayhew, Dean Crabtree and Andy Smith. There are several members who have had more than one year playing but the majority of them have just graduated from the small, but lively, beginners band. Mr. Mills, our present director, is well pleased with the instrumentation. SHIP BY TRUCK S Regular dependable service 1 ) Free pick-up and delivery in local zone ) J The Dalles Freight Line, Inc.
