FOREWORD GO WEST, YOUNG MAN! THESE BOLD WORDS, EXPRESSED BY HORACE GREELEY MANY YEARS AGO TO ENCOURAGE THE ADVENTUROUS LADS OF HIS DAY TO SEEK OUT AND EXPLORE PLACES THEY HAD NEVER BEEN, WERE JUST AS BECKONING TO THE OFFICERS AND CREW OF USS MAUNA KEA THAT COOL, GRAY MORNING IN EARLY NOVEMBER AS WE PREPARED TO DEPART OUR HOMEPORT OF CONCORD, CALIFORNIA, ON THE SHIP ' S 1987-88 DEPLOYMENT. FINALLY, ALL THOSE LONG HOURS OF MAINTENANCE AND TRAINING, INSPECTIONS, AND DRILLS WERE ABOUT TO PAY OFF. NO QUESTION ABOUT IT: WE WERE REALLY GOING ON WESTPAC!! WE HAD SET SAIL FROM SAN FRANCISCO BAY MANY TIMES BEFORE, BUT THIS TIME WAS DIF- FERENT . AHEAD LAY VISITS TO LANDS AND PEOPLE THAT MANY OF US HAD ONLY HEARD ABOUT, EXPERIENCES WE WOULD REMEMBER FOR THE REST OF OUR LIVES. WE KNEW THAT THE NEXT FEW MONTHS WOULD BRING MANY LONG DAYS OF HARD WORK THAT SOMETIMES WOULD TRY THE PATIENCE OF THE BEST OF US; HOWEVER, THERE WAS ONE COMMON THOUGHT THAT COULD BE SEEN IN THE EYES OF EVERY CREWMEMBER AS WE SAILED OUT UNDER THE GOLDEN GATE: OUR GREAT ADVENTURE HAD JUST BEGUN.
