Mark J. Meister A LONG TIME AFTER The shadows of night had long since fallen, but the old man did not bother to get up from hischair to turn on the lamp. Instead, he continued rocking back and forth, his eyes sparkling as he reminiced aloud, his great-grandson perched on his lap, straddling one knee and listening intently to every word. | spent six years of my life at Maumee Valley. Yes, little Phil, six wonderful years. Of course at the time! didn’t think they were so wonderful.” The old man licked his lips, then cleared some of the roughness out of his throat. “You see, we were a small school, sosmall, in fact, that you might have called us a large family instead. Yes, now that | think about it, that’s exactly what we were—A large family, brothers and sisters. Not just friends or people who just happened to learn together—but brothers and sisters.”’ The old man paused to reflect, and nothingcould be heard but the creaking of his chair. “We had our problems of course. But then, every large family has its problems. We had our good times too. Plenty of them in fact. But we were always growing and changing. Sometimes, for the better. Sometimes, for the worse. But weall grew together. We....” The old man stopped, and tears ran down the wrinkles in his withered face. ‘What's wrong, Grandpa?” the small boy asked. ‘‘Why're you crying” ‘Oh, you wouldn't understand, ’ the old man said in a very tired voice. ‘You see, | miss my brothers and sisters.

Cyndi Rhuland | don't know where we went wrong, but the feeling’s gone and | just can’t get it back.—Gordon Wondering if where I’ve been is worth the things I've been through—James Taylor The gods conceal from men the happiness of death, that they may endure life. —Lucan Don't it always seem to go that youdon’t know what you got 'till it’s gone?—Joni We sometimes congratulate ourselves at the moment of waking trom a troubled dream; it maybe so the moment after death.—Hawthorne And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart! For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed. For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill? Seek him always with hours to live. For it ishis to fill your need, but not your emptiness. Ane think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it | was you worthey, directs your course. ...let these be your desires...to know the pain of too much tenderness...andane to boeed willingly and joyfully...ane then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips. For reason, ruling alone, isa force confining; and passion, unattended, isa flame that burns its own destruction ...consider your judgement and your appetite even as you would two loved guests in your house. Surely youwould not honour one guest above the other; for he who is more mindful of one loses the love and faith of both. Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion with reason. ..rest in reason and move in passion.
