He arrived at our school during its first year of occupancy in the Upper School building and has since enhanced the formation and growth of Maumee Valley and of the young people who have attended and represent the school. He has given much of himself to the school, enriching its educational philosophy with his own integrity and guidance, and never permitting the functioning of the school to stagnate in cus- tomary methods. He has always been willing to experience and experiment with new and challen- ging ideas. Indeed, the New School, his latest ac- hievement, was built with the intention of encourag- ing progress in the lesser explored areas of edu- cation. Now that he has done so much for Maumee Valley, he is leaving us next year to meet a new challenge by creating a school to encourage the growth of others as well as his own personal growth. Although we will miss him greatly, we wish him the best of everything. In our gratitude for his leadership and foresight, we dedicate this book to him: Mr. Gordon Schofield. Kyle Cubbon What could she say to the fantastic foolybear and what could she say to brother and what could she say to the cat with future feet and what could she say to mother after that time she lay lush among the lolly flowers on that hot riverbank where ferns fell away in the broken air of the breath of her lover and birds went mad and threw themselves from trees to taste still hot upon the ground the spilled sperm seed. —Lawrence Ferlinghetti 22 Win McCreary You are the brave who do not break In the grip of the mob when the blow comes straight to the shattered bone When the sockets shriek;when your arms lie twisted under your back Good men holding their courage slack in their frightened pockets see how weak the work that is done— and feel the weight of your blood on the ground for their spirit’s sake And build their anger, stone on stone— Each silently, but not alone. In the beginning Man created God; and in the image of Man created he him. And Man gave unto God a multitude of names, that he might be Lord over all the earth when it was suited to Man. And on the seven millionth day Man rested and did lean heavily on his God and saw that it was good. And Man formed other men of the dust of the ground, and a host of others likened unto his kind. And these lesser men Man did cast into the void. And some were burned; and some were put apart from their kind. And Man became the God that he had created and with his miracles did rule over all the earth. But as all things did come to pass, the Spirit that did cause man to create his God lived on within all men. And man saw it not. But for Christ's sake he'd better start looking. —J2 Tull 24 Doug McPherson What can you see if you look to the sky? What can you learn if you've got the will to try? The light will blind you if you look to the sun. Don't try to see what is happening today— You may be surprised at how frightened you become. Don't try to find what tomorrow will bring— You may be surprised at how lost you become. Look to yesterday— pray for tomorrow And watch out for today. Look to yesterday— see what you've done. Look to yesterday....... and pray. —David Willey 26 Making friends for the world to see Let the people know you've got what you need With a friend at hand you can see the light If your friends are there then everything's alright. —Elton John catch me in the sunlight catch me pacing past the trees Cynthia Saunders build a fence around me the moment that you see running i'm so elusive sometimes i miss the things worth stopping for. —rod mckuen iama part of all that i have touched and that has touched me. Meister A LONG TIME AFTER The shadows of night had long since fallen, but the old man did not bother to get up from hischair to turn on the lamp. Instead, he continued rocking back and forth, his eyes sparkling as he reminiced aloud, his great-grandson perched on his lap, straddling one knee and listening intently to every word. | spent six years of my life at Maumee Valley. Yes, little Phil, six wonderful years. Of course at the time! didn’t think they were so wonderful.” The old man licked his lips, then cleared some of the roughness out of his throat. “You see, we were a small school, sosmall, in fact, that you might have called us a large family instead. Yes, now that | think about it, that’s exactly what we were—A large family, brothers and sisters. Not just friends or people who just happened to learn together—but brothers and sisters.”’ The old man paused to reflect, and nothingcould be heard but the creaking of his chair. “We had our problems of course. But then, every large family has its problems. We had our good times too. Plenty of them in fact. But we were always growing and changing. Sometimes, for the better. Sometimes, for the worse. But weall grew together. We....” The old man stopped, and tears ran down the wrinkles in his withered face. ‘What's wrong, Grandpa?” the small boy asked. ‘‘Why're you crying” ‘Oh, you wouldn't understand, ’ the old man said in a very tired voice. ‘You see, | miss my brothers and sisters. Cyndi Rhuland | don't know where we went wrong, but the feeling’s gone and | just can’t get it back.—Gordon Wondering if where I’ve been is worth the things I've been through—James Taylor The gods conceal from men the happiness of death, that they may endure life. —Lucan Don't it always seem to go that youdon’t know what you got 'till it’s gone?—Joni We sometimes congratulate ourselves at the moment of waking trom a troubled dream; it maybe so the moment after death.—Hawthorne And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart! For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed. For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill? Seek him always with hours to live. For it ishis to fill your need, but not your emptiness. Ane think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it | was you worthey, directs your course. ...let these be your desires...to know the pain of too much tenderness...andane to boeed willingly and joyfully...ane then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips. For reason, ruling alone, isa force confining; and passion, unattended, isa flame that burns its own destruction ...consider your judgement and your appetite even as you would two loved guests in your house. Surely youwould not honour one guest above the other; for he who is more mindful of one loses the love and faith of both. Therefore let your soul exalt your reason to the height of passion with reason. ..rest in reason and move in passion. Mike Zerner Some men see things and ask why?
