Baseball - - Athletes 0 inimitable BASEBALL A tight to the tinish seemed to be in store tor Maui baseball tans, as all tour teams in the inter- scholastic league had excellent ball playersf The Sabers were in the thick ot the battle tor the cham- pionship and was tied tor second place with Lahai- naluna atter the tirst weekend ot league play. With about twelve veterans torming the nucleus ot this year's team, the Sabers headed toward an- other successtul season. The team was led by Co- captains Richard I-londa and Frank Shimabukuro. Mr. Suyetomo Toyama and his assistants, l-larry Matoi and Blackie Shimoda, coached the team. The Sabers opened the season by whipping St. Anthony 6-I in a scrimmage contest at Paia on March I4. Roy Asato, Roy Takahashi and Raymond Shimizu pitched excellent baseball in holding the Saints to one run on eight hits, while their team- mates blasted tour St. Anthony pitchers tor six runs on eight hits. In the tirst interscholastic league game the Sa- bers split a double-header with Lahainaluna, win- ning the tirst game 2-I in Il innings, then going down to deteat 7-2 in the nightcap. Sophomore: Warren Sugimura was the big hero ot the tirst game as he singled home Richard Higashi in the llth in- ning tor the tie-breaking run. Roy Asato gained his tirst win ot the season as he went the route, holding the Lunas to three hits. In the second game the tide turned as the Lunas bounced back to whip the Sa- bers. Several costly errors early in the game put the Lunas ahead 6-O and this lead was too much to over- come. David Pacheco and Paul l-lasegawa prevented a shutout as each scored a run. As the yearbook goes to press, we regrettully close the baseball section with about IO more inter- scholastic league games to be played plus possibly a tew exhibition games in l-lonolulu.
