SENIORS Sus1e Stanton Ruby Dell Walker .T 1mmy Dlckens Lenora Ragland CLASS HISTORY Of the or1g1nal class that started school on September 9 1937 there are f1VC left Dur1ng the past eleven years some students have dropped out or moved away and others have fa1led to make the grade We have managed to keep a medlum szzed class however Fziteen senlors w1ll graduate from Maud I-hgh School th1s year It all began back 1n the year 1937 The day was Monday September 9 A group of fr1ghtened boys and g1rls were go1ng to school for the1r f1rst t1me Everyone wanted to h1de or go home but soon we got used to It all MISS Stout our f1rst teacher brought a v1ctrola to school so we could enjoy the muslc Our favorlte song was Pop Goes The Weasel She also told us stones and sometlmes we went on p1cn1cs In the second grade Mrs Wells was our teacher Th1s year the th1rd fourth and f1fth grades came mto our room for lessons 1n Plcher Mem ry We wondered how they could read plctures That year Mrs Wells took us to Sprmg Lake Park and to her home 1n Texarkana ln the thlrd grade our class was enlarged by some new students from Rock Creek Af f1rst we were afra1d of them but later they became a part of the gang Th1s was a b1g year for us because we learned the mult1p11cat1on tables and long d1v1s1on Th1s was also the year for vacc1nat1ons MIZZCIDIIIB Lee was our teacher and she kept us calrn u.nt11 we were vaccmated and then she had a room full of s1ck pup1ls to take care of We started our fourth year off 1n the old h1gh school bu1ld1ng but after a few days we had tomove to the old sewmg room up by the masonlc lodge because the h1gh school bulldmg was be1ng repalred and a new grade school bu1ld1ng was under constructlon M1ss W1lson a new tea were 111 It Carrol Wayne Black and .T1mmy D1ckens now our favorlte muslclans fBut we aren t forgettmg .Terry Dmgus v1ol1n1st J After the addit1on of a new grade we sk1pped from the fourth to the sixth grade Mrs Guantt, our teacher that year, let us bulld a cxty 1n the class room Itwas named Cardmal Cxty after our mascot There was in our cxtya post offzce, adrug store agrocery store and a servmce statzon Mrs Guantt taught art and developed some good art1sts too M1ss Nabors taught us dunng the last part of the year Then came the seventh grade whlch some claxm to be the hardest one 111 school Mrs Chance our teacher made It plenty rough Th1s year we were 1n1t1ated mto Span1sh by Mrs Beasley Soon everyone was speakmg Spamsh Inthe elghth grade and our last grade III h1gh school we had Mr Sunpson for a teacher Our class room was the one on the far end of the hall We hked th1s because we thought we could make nomse and not d1sturb other classes That was what we thought but lt d1d not turn that way Th1s year we had more Spanlsh but th1s t1me xt was taught by Mrs Chance and nearly everyday someone had to stay ln for not know mg h1s lesson Th1s year we graduated from grade school . . , ' I . I H . . . , D . . . , . . . . , , . . . 0 , . - In the n1nth grade the boys got the1r 1ntroduct1on to agnculture and the g1rls began homemakmg Mr Floyd was our Ag teacher and Mrs Covey taught the g1rls homemakmg Mrs Ashford was the math teacher MISS Murphy the Enghshteacher and Mrs Bruton the h1story teacher The freshmen alway s suffer 1n1t1at1ons The boys catch It 111 the Ag belt l1ne and the g1rls agon1ze through homemakmg 1n1t1at1on The belt l1ne 1S by far the warmest k1nd of 1n1t1at1on When we were sophomores Mr Emerson came to Maud All the boys were happy because we could plav basketball MISS Stout was our class sponsor That year a calf scramble was held at the Four States Fa1r 1n Texarkana Several boys entered but Perry Ne1l was the only one of our class that got a calf Th1S year the Ag boys got an 1ncubator and hatched some ch1ckens to sell for money to buy th1ngs needed 1n the shop and the class room When we were Jun1orsth1ngs began to happen the Jun1or sen1or ban quet the Card1nals won second place 1n the d1str1ct playoff mbasketball and f1rst place 1n softball M1ldred Breed from our class won the race for basketball sweetheart Inc1dentally the Gardmals of 47 were com posed of Jun1or boys except for one Mrs L6CWT1ght was our sponsor our cred1t Ours 15 the f1rst class of seventy f1Ve pe cent boys to grad uate here Our athlet1c record 1S another famous f1rst We took the d1str1ct champ1onsh1p 1n basketball away from Detro1t and we 11terally mean took for they d1d NOT g1Ve 1t away Coach Emerson s whole Cardmal A squad was composed of sen1or boys Our sen1or cand1date for Harvest Queen Lenora Ragland won w1th a bang We lost one glrl at m1d term and ga1ned two at the end of the fourth s1x weeks, the Derb1n s1sters 1948 w1ll be remembered by the sen1ors as the year of the Cardmal v1ctory the Openlng of the school cafeter1a, the supermtendent s marnage, the dam debates To be or not to be That 1S the ISSUC, Mrs Patman, and MISS Murphy our sponsor s operat1on dur1ng the long bus paraly z1ng b11zzard There are prom1s1ng s1gns of Spflng 1n the a1r the b1ueb1rds are here, but the redb1rds are not forgotten We are look1ng forward to our sen1or play the 11Ve1Y class part1es the 48 Jun1or sen1or banquet, and f1nally commencement - ' ll ll ' ' . . 3 ' .
