We stood in the doorway ot what was to become the Auto Mechanics shop and gazed at the workmen as they slowly put together the parts of the building Materials, such as bricks, concrete blocks, and window frames were stacked about waiting their turn The area, which was to be the carport, was cluttered with innumerable items The vision of the completed school was hard to realize. Before . . . We started school in the new building! even though it had not been completed Phy- sical education classes were held outside The weather continued favorable and few prob- lems resulted, Later, when the snow had fall- en, we went back to the same place that we had visited in the spring, Now we saw stand- ing in front of us a completed structure, strongly built, with a parking area for the school employees. The realization of the new school was now complete. Compliments of a af, , .4 ,A 5 ' 5' I, ffiffazfvasi f 1- - Wm-W . M., . ., ,..i..W..,.... ,A gr ,,.M,,.....,v....x f,,....-V '1 ' . ... L.. Unr Superintendent and Heard ef Ellnealinn This year we are getting settled in a new high school as a result of many long and tedi- ous hours of planning that have been spent by Mr. Judge and the School Board. Without their help and backing, we would still be shoving our way down traffic jammed halls, trying desperately to get up the stairs when everyone else is coming down, and cramming cur books in a locker which we shared with someone else. We are fortunate, however, that there are people like Mr. Judge and the members of the School Board who are on our side , public spirited in the advancement of educational facilities, and are behind us all the way. Everyone of us, as a member of this High School, can be proud of the men and women who helped us get our new building. Too low left to right - Mr. E. C. Mr. Elawsnn, Hur Principal Mr. Clawson has had more than his share of problems this year since we moved into the new Senior High School before the contractors had com- pleted it. We all complained a lot about the little inconveniences, but nobody stopped to think about the man who had a real headache trying to keep everybody happy, Mr. Clawson. His job this year has been much more complicated than in previous years because of the added problems that were bound to arise in an unfinished school, but he has solved all of these problems successfully. GEORGETOWN DANVILLE CHAMPAIGN QUINCY , PEORIA MANUAL Mattoon High School's l956 football season is in the record book, but in the memories of players, coaches, and fans, it will long remain. The Green Wave, playing hot and cold , finished the season with a record of 3 wins, 2 ties, and 4 losses. Mattoon ended in eighth place in the Big I2 Conference with a record of 2 wins and 3 losses. Although the record was mediocre, it doesn't tell the whole story. The Wave owes no football fan an apology, for it furnished many exciting moments. The players reached their height during the Decatur game in which they simply refused to be beaten. -if .',, 4 ,Wa N U . . Slzhnnl Spirit and Enthusiasm ln the final seconds of the game, the tough Decatur team made their last bid for victory. They advanced to the three yard line only to be turned back by the Wave's determined wall, The tie with Robinson in the season opener might be blamed on a boot to Mattocn's morale when captain and quarterback Dick Andrews was injured in pre-season scrimmage and was side- lined for the remainder of the season. The statistics show that Checkley was the top ground gainer with 6l5 yards, and an average of 8 yards per carry. Ronnie Orr sparked the team on defense with lO9 tackles. Their record boasted wins over three Big l2 schools and Charleston. Many of the more proficient sophomores moved up to the varsity and proved to be very valuable. This . Gale Garbe, an impressive hurler, was the de- ciding factor in many games this year. The over-all team was very well balanced and was certainly hard to beat. Last year wasn't an exceptional season as we saw the Wave only win one game and lose eight. Their record might not have been the best in the book, but all through the season the diamcnd men gave forth with all the spirit and fight that could be expected of them. While attending our classes this year, we have sat in mod- ernly furnished rooms Our everyday school surroundings are more pleasing than we have ever known them to be. We sat at custom-built desks in the class- rooms, and our teachers faced us from be' hind colorful desks. Our modern black- boards are green in color and they are very restful to our eyes. Our wandering eyes also greet pastel colored walls and floors, The color themes are well carried out throughout the rooms. This year, no student had a need to leave the building during the day. All our needs are met in the immediate vicinity of the building. Our spacious classrooms are much more appreciated because of the many facil- ities. Another new addition to the classrooms is a clock in every room. The entire school has worked with synchronizing time. The lighting of our classrooms leaves little to be desired. On clear days, light is provided by the sun's rays streaming in through the large windows which line all sides of the building. Among other advantages are the handy bulletin boards and the public address sys- tem which is one of the vital centers of our student life. In the following pages are various events of our school life that our classrooms have helped to improve. In these ways our new classrooms have helped us complete our first successful year in our new school. Dick Welch learns the operation ot a mil ing machine.
