Among the many fall activities were football games, the Fall party, and the Homecoming celebration, Our first school carnival was a complete suc- cess and found both students and par- ents enjoying themselves and winning prizes from booths usually found on a carnival grounds. Ray's Rendevouz, with its dancing beauties and candle- lit room, lent an atmosphere of excit- ing night club life. If you had a lZ:OO lunch hour, you could dance, participate in intra-mural basketball, or just sit on thefbleachers and hold hands with your favorite guy or gal. Have some cider and donuts. Our third annual Homecoming Queen, Miss Thalia Brandenburg, was crowned in a different fashion this year than from the past two years. The Queen and her Court were presented to the football fans during the half of the Mattoon-Danville game. Now sit down and listen to the story. The highlight of every Christmas Assembly is the play given by the Dramatics Club. This year the play was under the outstanding su- pervision of Mr. Fischer, dramatics coach. The i955 Christmas play, Pop Reads the Christmas Carol, was a timely and amusing one-act comedy. lt concerned a typical family whose father insisted that the reading of the Christmas Carol should be a family tradi- tion, Between Junior's hanging mistletoe and Paul's shaving and cutting himself, Father finds it -a very difficult task to get his family together to read the Carol. The cool frosty autumn air found Kinzel field filled with excited and uproarious Green Wave fans. The team, of course, was tops whether winning or losing, but there were other attractions too - the cheerleaders and formations of the band. Although the season ended with a record of 4 wins, 4 losses, and l tie, anyone who watched the players of the team through the season realized that they were watching a bet- ter than average football team. Our physical strength may have come from the boys, but it was the mental ability and strength of our head Coach, Roy Colin, who made this record possible. This year, for the first time since l947, the Green Wave won its Homecoming game by topping the Danville Maroons l3-O, lt was one of the most enthusiastic games of the season. This is the third best record that any Green Wave basketball team has had in the history of our school. The Wave's main claim to fame this year was the upset of Quincy Sl -SO. The Blue Devils were then ranked the number five team in the state. Mattoon had a standout this year as guard Bob Mc- Dowell was leading scorer in the Big l2, and also broke two of Mattoon's school scoring records. Bob scored 33 points in one ball game, and he got a total of 479 points for the season. Again this year, Mattoon came out on top in the regional tournament. They defeated Villa Grove and Ar- cola in the first and semi-final rounds and went on to defeat Sullivan in the championship game by the score of 53-37. Green Wave Grapplers , slightly hampered by the lack of experience, finished the season with a not too impressive record of four wins and six defeats. But the won and loss record is a minor part of the story, many times the only difference between winning and losing was the loss of one or two matches. Butch McKee, Bob Michaels, and Dennis Fickes all placed in the Big Twelve, as well as in the sectional meet. Dennis Fickes was the only wrestler the Green Wave sent on to the State Wrestling Tournament. Next year's team will be strengthened by eleven re- turning lettermen. The girls also attended a play day, where they met many new friends and found them- selves enjoying many of the events that were planned for them. Again this year, as in the past, they held their annual Mother-Daughter Banquet where the girls honored their mothers and presented them with a wonderful, delicious meal. The M Club was again as active as it has been in the past. Twenty-six girls participated in the bowling provided by the Club. The Club entered five girls in the all-state G. A, A. bowling tournament. One of the new activities was the sale ot war stamps. The Council buys and sells the stamps once a week. When they decided to sell stamps, they felt that they would not only be helping the country, but the students as well. Diversified Ileeullatinns Under the capable leadership of their ad- visor, Mr. Charles Crites, the members of the D. O. Club are given an opportunity to become acquainted with such fields as radio work and mechanics. As they work at the various jobs to which they are assigned and in which they are most interested, they can see whether or not they would be suited for employment in that field. By working a few hours a day besides their regular class period, these boys gain both the experience of working with fellow employ- ees and a better understanding of their chosen field. Good luck from Earl Ross. Building Trades This year the Building Trades Class, under the supervision of Mr. Leon Elliott, finished a new modern home at 202 Circle Drive, Westview Place. This is the third house that has been built by the Mattoon High School Building Trades Class. These classes, consist- ing of juniors and seniors, build a complete home during a two-year period. The present house was finished and an open house was held in the spring. The house was planned by the Architectural Drawing Class under the su- pervision of Mr. Charles Crites. Lett to r ght - Nancy Cobb, Carol Ann Wall Lorene Tynan, Sandra Welch, Nancy Siebert, Doris Johnson, Jo Adams, Mr Swearingen, Jane Newby, Gay Furry. PAGE 79 llislrihulive Edunallnn lf you are interested in salesmanship and are planning to enter some line in that field, D. E. is a very educational organization in which to enter. Mr. Jones, the advisor, finds job opportun- ities for the students, then they are inter- viewed and placed in a local store to work three hours a day. Again this year, the students in D. E. repre- sented Mattoon at the State D. E. Convention, held in Springfield, Illinois. Besides working in retail stores they operated the popcorn mach- ine at the football and basketball games and sponsored dances during the year. Ufflce llccupallnns The girls in the Office Occupations Club attend two classes at school in the morning and enter the business world for the remain- ing part of the day, working at least fifteen hours a week and receiving the beginning of- fice worker rate of pay. The Office Occupations Club tries to create interest in office work as a vocation, provide exploration of vocational opportunities, and develop leadership. They attended the Area Ill Convention at Charleston, Illinois, and the State Conference at Springfield, Illinois. Each member's Qoal is to learn about office procedure and to be a good office worker.
