The good iIlflll0lll'l'S started to tzlko over, and soon Mnttoon sotllvd down to being :1 good little prai- rio town. In the earliest days of Mat- toon, Ichabod Jennings built this house for his bride. Best Wishes - Provinzano Studio M iwrnanitfg Q .. if - The Mattoon Hotel, later named the Pennsylvania House. On a June day in 1855, the first train rolled over the shining rails to Mattoon. Three thousand peo- rp1e gathered to gaze in wonder at the miraculous iron horse. Soon after, a train schedule from Chi- cago to Terre Haute was arranged so other towns could make connections here. However, those early trains had a habit of being so late that their passengers would often have to stay over until the next day. Mattoon's lhospitality became widely known, and many well educated families from the eastern states came bringing culture and social standing. Two hotels in particular played important roles in the early history of Mattoon. The Pennsylvania House was the first big building in town, and the first sidewalk, paved with corncobs, led from the street to the hotel entrance. The Essex House, the best known early hotel, was one of a chain of Eating Houses where the trains stopped twenty minutes for breakfast, lunch or dinner. From a window space in this building, Abraham Lincoln spoke to a, great crowd of local people early in the campaign of 1856. The Essex House, built by Eb- enezer Noyes, served as 3 de- pot for many years. 'lncere congratulations from W. S. There are more people involved in the production of a play than the actors, Behind those velvet curtains you will find the stage manager, stage hands, make-up girls, property men, electricians, publicity agents, and by far the most important, the director. A play cannot be cast and produced in a week or even two weeks. lt takes many hours of hard, painstaking practice, but during the first performance, the results of those grueling hours of practice are shown and appreciated, A feeling of satisfaction courses through the director, the actors, and those ever-important behind the scenes helpers, 7 T, POLE CAT DANCE I LONESONIE Be it known that all gals vvishin' to sail upon the sea ot matrimohy be at the High School Gym the evehin' of the Sadie l-lawkinfs Day Race. Judge, Superintendent X Mr. E. C. Bauer, Secretary Mr. Fred Campbell Mrs Edna Kixer Mr. R. D. Bills Jr. X Where Policy Is Made These are the people behind the scenes in our school system. With them rest the problems and decisions of planning the annual budget, letting contracts for repairs and building, and hiring teach- ers. The members of the school board and Mr. Judge have been extremely busy this year due to the passing of the School Bond Issue. Without the re- ports and comments issued by the school board, it is felt that students would 'be surging through these crowded halls for many years to come. Mr- Carl Une Mr. Jack Chaney rs its Mr. Herbert A. Clawson The unpopular position held by Mr. Weyrauch needs a man capable ot dealing fairly and squarely with the student body. To Mr. Weyrauch falls the unpleas- ant task of taking disciplinary action. The trials and tribulations of his job would try a saint. Mr. Weyrauch has overcome them masterfully. Putting Theory to Practice Another successful year has been put in by Mr. Herbert Clawson. With the new eight hour school day, Mr. Clawson has had tremendous prob- lems with which to cope. He is one who had to decide where these one thousand students were to be put. This is a prob- lem that the average person would call impossible with our limited space. Mr. Clawson proved his worth and ability many times during the past year. Mr. John T. Weyrauch Compliments of Dr. S. H Allan Guidance Director Here is the fella responsible for the Junior and Senior Class tests, When you were in a dither trying to choose the topic for your term paper, Mr. l-looper's office was the first place you ran for an idea. l-le is also the one whom the seniors should thank for his extensive and help- ful information about scholarships An- other successful year can be marked up for Mr. Hooper, Mrs. Betty Hardwick, Mrs. Ruby Campbell, Mrs. Helen Kramer H ousekeepers When you carelessly threw a gum or candy wrapper in the halls, did you ever stop to think of the tireless effort these men put forth to keep our school a clean- er and better place? These men are re- sponsible for the excellent conditions of our classrooms. They give generously of their time and energy after school as well as during the day by chaperoning dances, coaching the school teams, conferring with students and parents, and acting as club advisors. Thanks to the Lions Club and the Student Counf cil members, our recreational problem was solved by the monthly Hit Parade Dances held at the Burgess-Osborne Auditorium, We enjoyed smooth' ing the rough edges from our dancing, but vve're still asking, What the heck is the Mambo? The Council set a nevv rule that students may be elected to serve as either a student council member or a class officer. This was gladly accepted by everyone, since this will give more students an cpportunity to participate in school activities. ln order to gain and exchange nevv ideas with other high schools, the council sent members to a workshop at DeKalb and the state convention at Peoria.
