ARSITY BASKETBALL The whistle blows ending the final game of the season for a sometimes hot and sometimes cold Green Wave team. The future looked sunny for the cagers after three quick wins at the beginning of the season, They then dropped into a slump which lasted long through the holiday tournaments and regular season. The luckless Wave did not dent the win column for fifteen games, then they beat Springfield by two points in a hard fought game. The team finished the season with a 5 and l9 record. Mr, Sullivan is looking forward to a strong team next year, as several boys are moving from the B team to the varsity squad. Decker rocks up two more points for the Ierry McDowell rebounds. Green Wave. Hart hits from the corner HBH TEAM The sophomore hope- fuls of Ed Lash's UB team came through with flying colors this year. Using a play-calling offense, they ran up a very successful season, Coach Lash was not blessed with much height, but the sharp- shooting wave sopho- mores made up for their average height. With a fine freshman team com- ing up next year, M.H.S. will see a smooth sopho- more team to take the place of the boys lost to the varsity. FRESHMAN TEAM Coach Max Patrick has many reasons to be proud of his 1953-54 basketball team. With an impress- ing 12-4 record, Mattoon's frosh cagers looked very good against all teams played. The future of MHS. basketball teams is in very good hands with such tall boys as l-lorn and Garbe and an excellent guard such as Andrews. Only by their watchful care do our schools move forward on the path of destiny. 44942 Only a disabling injury forced Mr. Starwalt to give up a life long service to the young people of this community. After teaching rural schools for 22 years he became a member of the Board of Education in the Humboldt District. He has served on the Unit District Board. since its beginning. School Board membership often eams more buffets than praise. It costs members time and energy with no renumeration whatever. We hope that our small MR. O. F. STARWALT token of appreciation may serve as some reward for his unselfish labor. l N 6952, MR. VIRGIL IUDGE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL The toughest job around the school is dish- ing out the penalties for wrongdoing. This un- pleasant task has fallen to Mr. Weyrauch who has handled the job with a great deal of skill. G SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Mr. fudge was a newcomer to our schools this year, however, within a rela- tively short time he has won a place in our hearts. His obviously sincere interest in us and our affairs, his kindly attitude in dealing with us and our problems, and his able leadership in helping the board, faculty, and students develop better schools. 962 MR. I OHN WEYRAUCH PRINCIPAL A genuine concern for the Welfare of each of our students guides Mr. Claw- son's activities in managing our high school. The administration of the Widely diversified program of a modern high school is very difficult. The man in charge is constantly faced with problems both serious and complex. Mr. Clawson has done a commendable job in solving these problems and helping us to obtain a good education. MR. W. G. HOOPER MR. H. A. CLAWSON GUIDANCE DIRECTOR Mr. Hooper is the man to see about any problems you might have during the school year. He is never too busy to see us and he is always ready to assist us on applying for scholarships and making plans for college. To a great many of us he has been a real friend. 6979 FACULTY Art Department: Mr. Moritz. English Department: Miss Bowman, Miss Bratton Miss Heath, Mr. Tweedy, Mrs. Neal, Miss Grimes Miss Gabbert. Essays, short stories, and book reports go hand in hand with practically any English class. Speeches and poems are also a part ot this very important, though we sometimes think otherwise, subject. Have you seen a paint-spattered or pot- tery covered student walking around? More than likely he is taking an art course. This is a very interesting and beneficial course for any student with a creative mind. lf you can't boil water without burning it , the course for you is homemaking. These courses not only teach the cooking and sewing side of the homemaker, but also the arts of interior decoration and child care. Homemaking Department: Mrs. Rockabrand, Mrs. Zimmerman, Miss Whitezel. e982 Business Department Row 1: Miss Lahey, Miss Franklin, Mrs. Harden. Row 2: Mr. lones, Mrs. Monier Mrs. Kna y , pp, Mr. Swearingen. Typing, shorthand, stenography, and any other course pertaining to the business world are a part of the business education depart- ment. For any young person who is planning to make his living by office work, any one of these courses would be extremely helpful. Helping boys that are chiefly interested in becoming farmers is the job of the agriculture department. Livestock, soil conservation, and farm improvement are just part of the many lessons that are taught. Electricity, metal, wood, and vocational trades are all that go together to make up the vocational department. These courses are open to boys who are interested in industrial education of any sort. Vocational Department: Mr. Ikenberry, Mr. Mc- Peak, Mr. Osborne, Mr. Crites, Mr. Elliott. 44992 FACULTY Agriculture Department: Mr. Erwin, Mr. Stewart. .174 E w1:-Iwi . ,, . ,, , -f-- .: : sn we it ff V, ,sm QE is i L F ,,,4,....,..,. , - W - ' - . . .. . fl 5 Language Department Library: Miss Pyle, Mrs. Struthers Miss Lutz, Miss Keoughan. During study hall periods, a person can read the latest mag- azines or newspapers for enjoyment or for obtaining information. Solving equations, theorums, figuring formulas are all that go together to make up the mathematics department. A new rule was put to use this year. All l956 graduates must have one year of mathe- matics. lf you have the ambition to be another Einstein, the science department is the one for you. Solving formulas, figuring the depth and height of objects and di- secting insects make up part of the pro- gram in science courses. Here the boys have a chance to train tor military lite, by marching and drilling, A very rigid in- spection is held in the spring, ln physical education the boys are taught wrestling, basketball, baseball, and health. The girls learn the techniques of volleyball, basketball and tumbling. Exercises play a big part in limbering up the boys and girls for active physical eduf cation. The questions When did Columbus discover America? and 'lWhen did the Pilgrims carrie to America? are all anf swered in the social science department. ln these courses, students learn the his- tory ot the world. President Pat Kelly Vice-President Shirley Weber 4 , , Treasurer Eileen Overton Secretary This year, as in every year, all the Senior activities pointed to that Big day in May- graduation. The ending of high school days spelled the beginning of a lot of work for these four officers and their advisors, Miss Lahey and Mr. Crites. The ordering of class cards, the collecting of class dues, and the fitting of caps and gowns were just a few of the problems they ironed out this past year. Thanks to the well ape pointed committees, the Spring Party was a huge success again this year, A lot was expected of these four officers during the past year and they came through doing a tremendous job, We of the 1954 Senior Class say farewell and lots of luck to those who follow us.
