The Debate Team under the capable coaching of Mr. Clawson has been very active this Year, taking part in four invitational tournaments, as well as the Big Twelve Meet, the State Sectionals, and the State Finals. David Behrend was rated excellent at the Normal Invitational Tournament. The team as a whole tied for third in the Big Twelve and at the Lincoln lnvitational and won first at the Sec- tional. Besides participating in all these tournaments, they also found time to give a debate over WLBH and to give programs for various civic organizations. They held a restricted assembly for English and Social Studies classes on this year's subject, Resolved: That the United States Should Reject the Welfare State. M, H. To say that our band has had a very busy and successful year is putting it mildly. Everybody in school has noticed how our band has contributed to making our school activities more enjoyable. Under Mr. Brausa's capable direction, they won first in the District, and on April 27th and 28th they went to the State Contest- They played at all the football and basketball games as well as at all of our pep meetings. Between the halves of the football games they entertained the crowd with their formations, and at the basketball games the drum majorettes twirled lighted batons. We're looking forward to bigger and better things from our band in the future. 5 M61-rgfff' Left to right: Dick Ellsworth, Joan Broers, Ruth Henne, Mary Lou Lundeen, Peggy Cornell, Laverne Carman. Besides basket- a , Mr. Sheahan is tennis coach and assistant football coach. Also, he is our Athletic Director. lt was through his tireless efforts that we enjoyed all the athletic contests plus those beautiful programs. We all sincerely hope that someday soon Mr. Sheahan acquires a coat to match those pants! Mr. Chenoweth, known as Lee, was new to the coaching ranks of M. H. S. this year. But through the fine records of his cross country and golf teams, he showed that he certainly knew his stuff. We all know that Lee will have combined success. Next we have, Mr. Edward-calI-him'Ed-and-you-get-shot-Lash. Mr. Lash served and, l might add, served very successfully, as B. team basketball and Fresh-Soph football coach. He was, also, head baseball coach. His teams were always known to have plenty of fight. Another new coach at M. H. S. this year was Mr. Wilson. Mr. Wilson took over head football coach and introduced to the boys the T formation. We all soon learned that Mr. Wilson was not only an excellent football coach but, also a builder of men. He was wrestling and track coach this year. The fellow with the smiIe?? That's Mr. Johnson, assistant football and baseball coach. Although Mr. John- son believed that silence is golden, his words were always heeded. The fellow not pictured was Bill Bonali, freshman basketball coach. Mr. Bonali's boys turned in a fine record this year. With all our hearts, the fellows of the athletic teams thank these men for their help. With men such as these, Mattoon can't help but produce winning teams.
