This club was primarily formed for the benefit of boys who were enrolled in the shop classes. lt is a national association and is becoming highly developed in almost all schools throughout the country. Our chapter of over a hundred boys meets the first Monday evening ot every month. These meetings include such activities as boxing, basketball, and other sports which the boys enjoy, plus a business meeting. We hope you will understand that this is the first year for our local chapter. Next year we plan to include out-ot-town speakers and meetings with other nearby chapters. The Latin Club was organized early in September under the name ot P.A.L. fFor those unacquainted wtih Latin, the letters stand for Portae Ad Latinam, interpreted, it means Gateways to Latin. l The following officers were chosen: Consuls: Jerry Groniger, David Albert Tribune: Fred Zurheide Scribe: Charlene Bowen During the past year, meetings were held on alternate Wednesdays. Latin songs were learned, plays were given, and stunts enjoyed. A Latin newspaper subscription added to our interest. On January 20th, the club sponsored the pep assembly. Look among the snaps for the picture showing our gods and goddesses as they assembled on Mt. Olympus to bring help to the basketball team. They did help that week-end, for we won the game with Urbana and lost to Paris by only one point. Yea Jupiterl Latin Week was observed in May, with our annual banquet, May 9th. Food and dress were strictly Roman. Sounds like fun? Well, it was. Contestants were entered in the district and sectional meets ot the state Latin contest. We also participated in a national contest held in April. All in all, we had a very good year. Next year should be even better. Vale, you Latin students. During the progress of our school's athletic activities we have enjoyed each performance of our majorettes. Several solos and ensembles were exhibited during the half times of basketball games. These exhibitions were climaxed at the regional tournament by the tvvirling of lighted batons. The Band This year, as in all other years, we have been very busy in band. We played for all the football and basketball games. This takes a great deal of time, not only the playing, but the practicing that comes before it. Since last fall we have been working hard on contest material. You all know that our school enrollment has increased to almost 900 this Year, and consequently is now an A Class school. ln previous years we have been in B Class competition, therefore, we are now especially anxious to make a good impression on the other A Class bands. Some of us have been working very hard on solos or in ensembles. Besides our work on contest selections, we have given a winter and a spring concert. We have also sponsored several bands and soloists during the year. After graduation last year we lost many people without whom we thought we could never get along. lt took a long time to feel at home without them, but under the skilled direction and guidance of Mr. Brausa, we have pulled through victoriously. I-L Jackie Bock, Vice-President Joyce Haddock, President JoAnn Rude, Treasurer Doris VanGundy, Secretary Activities of the G.A.A. started off with a vveiner roast for all members on the night of September 29. This was the beginning of a very busy school year, and a very profit- able one, too. Receipts from the GAA. stand at the football, baseball, and track meets financed the organization'5 many activities. Nancy Ralston's team won honors at the end of the volleyball season, and Juanee Carlyle's team sat at the head table at the basketball banquet. Softball, ping pong, and badminton finished out the sports season. The M Club had more members this year than ever before. These girls were seniors and had earned at least l,2OO points in GAA. Lois Lazier won the bowling tour- nament. The highlight of the school year was a trip to Decatur, in February, to the Y.W.C.A. for a swimming party. February l8, the girls were hostesses at the Mattoon Play Day for six other schools. Representatives were sent to the Neoga Play Day, Paris Play Day and the State GAA. meeting. The year was successful for all, thanks to the leadership of our M Club and GAA. sponsors, Mrs. Kathleen Sievers and Miss Mary Shimer. 6' liluh Evelyn Weber, Vice-President Juanee Carlyle, President Ginny Potter, Secretary-Treasurer Outside Row: Joan Grafton, Madonna Horn, Nancy Lawyer, Pat Kletka, Pat Gillls, Martha Ward, Rose Annis, Marilyn Bock, Betty Breningmeyer, Beverly Dawson, Bonnie Young, Jackie Bock, Jean Schomaker, Leora Price, Evelyn Bumpus, Joyce Haddock, Joan Arthur, Sue Sullan, Norma Creviston, Nancy Ralston Mildred Fleming, Connie Daily, Virginia Garbe, Joyce Stigers, Mary Ann Dunn, Betty Smith, Joan Rude Inside Row: Delores Neher, Marilyn Sparks, Donna Shores, Sue Massey, Sue Larlphier, Jeannine Hendricks, Sue Hays, Marilyn Sheridan, Barb Merrick, Catherine Scoles, Harriett Reid, June Helling, Elizabeth Becker, Mrs. Sievers, Martha Moody, Barbara Oliver, Irene Cisna, Margaret Ellington, Phyllis Huckleberry, Lois Dent Elinor Alwardt, Emily Geptord, Helen Ballinger, Rosalie Arthur, Lois Lazier, Audrey Oakley, Lois Matthius Joan Bence. 1 1 Riddle 79 . Remember when you saw those goofy looking guys going around school with their neckties on backwards and their pants rolled up? Well, that was the initiation of new members into the M.H.S. Lettermen's Club. Then you ask, What is it? The Letter- men's Club is an organization for all Ml-l.S. boys who have won letters in some phase of varsity athletics. This year the club had one of the largest memberships in its history. The adviser was Mr. Tweedy. The officers of the club were Jim VanScyoc, president, Joe Wallace, vice-president, Charlie White, secretary-treasurer, and Keith Branson, ser- geant-at-arms. The biggest activity of the year was the promotion of the Faculty-Bush nessmen basketball game in the high school gym. The purpose of the game was to raise a fund to help defray the expenses of the M.l-l.S. athletic department. The club also took part in pep assemblies and other school activities throughout the school year. We believe that the Lettermen's Club did a fine job this year and they deserve a lot of praise for trying to further athletics in the Mattoon High School. MICKY DICK JOYCE DICK JoANN .dl l-lere are the Ml-l.S. pep-kids - always ready to yell at school games and assemblies, The i949-SO squad consisted ot tive members-Micky Abel, JoAnn Rude, Dick Spurlin, Joyce Tesson, and Dick Whitlock. Under the guidance ot Miss Lahey they worked as a team and introduced new yells and forma- tions. Joyce added color to the games with her acrobatics and drew applause wherever she went. As tournament time drew near they lost JoAnn but gained Peggy Sparks, a little girl with lots ot enthusiasm, who led cheers like an old-timer. The cheerleaders greatly appreciate the support given them by the student body and have enjoyed leading your cheers. Riddle 83 . H. 5. parts Funthall Previous to the start ot the season Mattoon was predicted to have a championship ball team, As the season progressed, however, the Green Wave proved to be hot and cold. Coach Tweedy, in his second year at M.l-l.S., had a team that was a little short on experience. The Golden Warriors won 4 games, lost 4 and tied one. Actually this is a good record, with a percentage Ot 500. Mattoon's best game ot the year was played at Decatur, where the Green Wave defeated the Reds l8-O, In the Big l2 race M.H.S. won two games and lost three. The Wave started the season like a house-a-tire, but after the victory over Urbana, gradually slowed down. The leaders in the scoring column were: haltback Glenn South, with Zl points, fullback Gene Coombes, with l9, halfbacks Bill Misenheimer, Jim VanScyoc and Keith Branson, with 18 points each. The Green Wave has prospects for a very good team next year with the return of several experienced lettermen. The season scores: MATTOON Belleville Danville 'I MATTOON MATTOON Charleston Champaign 3'l MATTOON MATTOON Decatur MATTOON Z0 Taylorville MATTOON Urbana Peoria Manual 20 MATTOON Kankakee MATTOON Basketball The Green Wave, under the tutelage ofa new coach, John Sheahan, had a below par season this year. Coach Sheahan stepped right into a strange school and had to start from scratch with an entirely new group ot boys. We believe that he did a very good job, even though the team won only nine games and lost l7. The Golden Warriors had a team that was hot and cold throughout the entire season. Danville, the runner-up to the state championship, defeated Mattoon by Only three points, 43-40, in an overtime duel. Another team in the Sweet l6 which M.H.S. played was Paris. The Tigers beat us 26 to Z4. Mattoon lost nine games by six points or less, which shows that the Green Wave just needed a little more push to have a winning ball club. ln the scoring column, the big guns for Mattoon were Bill Davis with 243 points, Charlie Armstrong with 209 and Mark Wagner with l86 points. Davis and Wagner, along with Ray Wigginton, Bernard Furry, Keith Branson, Glenn South, Bud Sewell, Dick McDonald and others, will be back next year to help form the '50-'51 aggregation. The Seniors on this year's team were Armstrong, Phil Lyons, Jim VanScyoc, and Jim Bone, Bill Davis was named honorable mention on the Chicago Daily News All-State team. Fifteen or twenty years ago M.H.S. had strong teams. At one time we won the Big l2 championship in cross country. Although the boys were constantly trying, under the stout coaching of John Sheahan, they didn't quite make the grade. Mattoon participated in dual meets with Cumberland, Paris and Charleston. We also had our team running in meets at Charleston, Champaign and the Big l2. Most of the teams which the Green Wave scheduled were tough, and this included the state championship Paris team. The entire squad was evenly balanced, more or less. John Shafer was perhaps the outstanding performer, as he won several meets and placed 9th in the Big 12 meet. The team should be much improved next year with the return of several lettermen. Track Previous to the opening of this year's track season it was questionable as to the type of team we would have As the season progressed it was evident that the M.H.S. thinclads had a pretty good amount of power. We participated in several dual meets and also in several relays, which included the llth annual Mat- toon Relays, the Paris relays, the Urbana relays and others. M.H.S. was among the leaders in all the meets they attended. The standout performers for the Green Wave this year included Gene Carlyle, who repeatedly won both the high and low hurdles, John Byrne in the discus and shot, Jim Bone, who did well in the pole vault, John Shafer in the mile, and Jerry Biggs in the hurdles. These included just a few of the many boys who helped to build our track team. The team as a whole was al- most evenly divided as to being stronger in the field or track events. Coach Tweedy's team had troubles at the first of the season because the weather would not permit outdoor practice for several days. Finally, however, the boys got into shape and the Green Wave looked impressive. Prospects for next year are pretty good with the return of several lettermen and a flock of good freshmen and sophomores. Wrestling The great sport of wrestling was started as a regular sport for the first time this season. Most of the high schools in the larger cities have wrestling teams, and it was evident that one was wanted in Mattoon. Under the able guidance of Coach Tweedy our team participated in several dual matches. They were also in the Big I2 meet and the Sectional matches at Danville. Mattoon had matches with Champaign, Urbana, Dan- ville and Paxton. The M.H.S. grunt and groan men were quite short on experience and consequently they didn't fare too well this season. They should be much better next year. The leaders on this year's squad included Gene Coombes, Fred Bumpus, Charlie Knight, Bill Conliri, Richard and Jerry Galbreath, Noel Cutright and others. Baseball ln his second year as head baseball mentor at Mat- toon High School, Ed Lash came out with a good looking young ball club. The Green Wave did not have many returning lettermen this year and thus they were a little short on experience. With a lot of good practice this season, the Wave should be much improved next year. The boys won their share of games, however, and there were several in which they lost by just a narrow margin. The leading pitchers for the Golden Warriors were Keith Branson, Ed Dowling and Bill Storm. All three will be back next year. ln the hitting department Gene Coombes, Rex Orr and Joe Webb did their share. The Peterson Park diamond was the base of opera- tion for the MHS home games. Games were played with Westfield, Decatur, Bethany, Effingham, Champaign, Charleston, Danville and others. Some of these teams were played twice. Mr. Sheahan lknown as Jolly John l also coached cross country and tennis. Here's wishing him all the luck in the world for his teams next year. Hevvey Tweedy served his second year as football, wrestling and track coach, and P.E, instructor. Handsome Hugh Tweedy is liked by all. Lots of luck to him next year. Ed Lash has taught and coached at Mattoon High for three years. He is the Frosh-Soph coach for football and basketball. He also coached the base- ball team and teaches biology at M.H.S.
