No man shortage here l ll Of course everyone knows were talking about the l,6'ltCl'IIlClliS Club, which is made up of boys who have been awarded letters in athletics. Do you wonder why the club was run so well? They had liill Tate as president, Phil Steinberg as vice-president, and .lack Record as secretary- treasurer. Oh, yes, their adviser and the man back of inany of their activi- ties was Mr. Tweedy, The l,0lIfCI'1ll6l1 really worked hard this year and made the club one of the most active in the school. Soine of the activities they undertook were the rattling of the Homecoming football, the sponsor- ing' of the Fall Party, and a banquet for all letternien, held in the Methodist Church basement on April 6. 'l'hey also initiated all the new letternien just before 'the banquet fdidn't they look funny with their ties on backwards and bowing' down to every l,etterman?j. The club ineinbership this year reached forty-four, the largest nuinber in many years, and we hope it will continue to grow even larger. Mr. Lash, Mr, johnson. Here THEY are! W'HO??? Why, the fine coaching staff of Nl. H. S., that has brought our school so many victories. First we have Nlr. Lash, who tif one were to judge by the look on his face, had some mighty tough battles with his basketball B team, but he always kept them fired up. He also was the head coach in Cross Country, and as this goes to press his baseball team has three victories against no defeats. Then there's Mr. Tweedy, our head football and track coach. This was Nlr. Tweedy's first year at Mattoon, and we certainly hope it isn't his last. Mr. Tweedy served as a very capable assistant to Mr. johnson during the basketball season. He was also adviser to the Lettermen's Club, and by the way, we all had a wonderful time at the Fall Party! l l l Next we have Mr, johnson, head basketball coach. Mr. johnson turned in a very fine record and at the close of the basketball season we were all sorry to hear that he had re- linquished his duties as a coach. However, we are glad he will continue to teach. Now here's Nlr. Gaines, our athletic director, whom we all know as Harry. Didn't we enjoy again those football Don Houching Dick Spurlint Bob Ballard' Dick Lane. and basketball programs? Wasn't it fun to go out of town. and when asked where you were from, to reply, Mattoon +and then to have the students say, Oh, yes, l've read about you on the sports page. Well, this is all due to the untiring efforts of Mr. Cainesg and, incidentally, thanks a lot, Harry. for the athletic bulletin board in the corridor. Now last, but not least. is Mr. Hahn, head of our golf team and one who just loves to spy on people, or-should we say-loves to scout games. Win or lose. coaches, wevre all behind you one hundred percent. At times it was hard to agree with you, but we know that whatever you did was for the best. Thanks again!! V Here are the managers-Don, Richard, Bob and Dick-four great helpers who really gave the coaches some timely assistance. 5.11: Sm-vviity-six Ill B111 Penislon, joe Wallace Tom Wallrlp B111 Davns Gary Brancll B111 Sparks Marla Wagner, Pele Orndorff Don DOW1lhg Rau. 2 lm VanScyoc, Don Larlmore Kexth Branson 1m Decker Danme Whllley Bob Lyons Merle Lowry, Gene Ryan Paul K1mrey 1m Bone P1111 Slemberg D1ck Thudlum 1111 3 Don Dlltl, Kenny Becker Gene Coombes Brad Campbell Bernard Furry Ed Purcell Gene Larlyle.
