Army in liurope, our new commandant, Captain Nowinski, after an extensive tour of duty in the liuropean theater, has come to M.H. S. and its honor R. O. T. C. unit. Along with Captain Nowinski the Army has allotted us another instructor, Sergeant Kinder, who served with the Army in its campaign in the South Pacific. And of course we still have Sergeant Taylor, the formidable coach of the rifle team Cjust one of his many accomplish- mentsj. Xiiith these three ahle leaders and a host of 'cadet officers the local R. O. T. C. unit is striving ahead at its goal. The lilatitoon High School R. O, T. C. Rifle Team has turned in a very- creditable record this year. The first match fired was the Page Fifty Hearst Trophy match, in which they scored 853, 802 and 743 out of 1000 for the first, second, and third teams respectively. The second match was the Fifth Army Intercol- legiate match, in which Mattoon had a total score of 7593 out of 8000. The exact ranking in these two matches is not yet known. The third and prohahly the toughest match was the Midwest Camp l'erry indoor Rifle Match at Kemper Military Atcademyi, Boonville, Missouri, in which Nattoon was represented hy jim liinnell, lioh Coffeen, Gordon Lepley, and Paul XVilkinson. They placed fifth out of 28 High Schools and Military Academy teams with a score of 722 out of 800, only 3 points short of a tie for second place. Much of the 'credit for this fine showing goes to Sergeant Taylor for 'his excellent joh of coaching. R. O. T. C. Bill Gustafson, Mr. Johnson, Bill Tate, Gene Carlyle, Charles Armstrong, jack Record, jim Bone, Darrell Miller, Bill Schlicher, Mr. Gaines. The Mattoon High School track team faced one of the toughest schedules in school his- tory this lylear, being without a first class sprinter. ln sunnning up the prospects, Coach Gaines 'had this to say: No track team can win without a sprinter: thus, we will be only fair this year, with Bill Tate and jack Record our only sure point- getters in,big meets. However, Mattoon's crop of sophomores is very strong and should come along well towards the end of the sea- son, Boys like Gene Carlyle, Gene Coombes, Charlie Armstrong, Jim Bone, John Shafer, Mike Getchell, Jim Zikes, Jim Decker, and Vllesley Strotman are bound to improve with additional experience. Jerry' Dwyer, middle distance runner, and three milers, Sims, Bart- imus, and Tom Seaman, have ability to pick Page Seventy-two up enough points to earn their varsity letters. Vtfith over 50 boys running on freshman teams, with Coach Henderson and the above group of fine sophomores, Mattoon can well look forward to the track season of 1949. Boys like Dick Upton and Bill Hamel, who led Mat- toon's great relay team of 1947, just don't show up every year, but the records given below, which these two boys established, will stand for many years as goals for future Green VVave track men.
