The Rotary Club felt that their untiring efforts should be rewarded, so they gave to the sixty pupils having the highest averages a banquet. Needless to say a large per cent of these were sophomores. This encouraged the students to keep up the high standard they had set. This class was making history that the faculty and themselves would be proud to speak of in the future. Do not forget their musical talents, said '26. You know there were some of the members of the sophomore class in the orchestra. In their Junior year this illustrious class showed good judgment in the selection of their class officers. They were Paul Spitz, president: Betty Armentrout, vice-presidentg Frederick Pegelow, treasurer and Dorothy Wright, secretary. It seemed to me that it would be impossible for the class to raise their scholastic standing but to my utter amazement they attained heights heretofore unreached Some of the students ranking among the highest in scholarship were Verna Aikman Mildred Christian Joseph Paden Frederick Pegelow and William Johnson They continued their good work in athletics Fifteen girls received Ms and several boys made letters in football basketball and track Four members of thls class represented the school rn typing at the Big Twelve Conference Meet three in shorthand one interpre ative reading and several in track and field events Irene Irving won a gold medal for accuracy in typing The three members of the Junior class who were on the Riddle Staff in 27 greatly helped to make it a success by their contributions They gave one of the best Junior Senior parties that has ever been given by a Junior class to the seniors There are many more accomplishments of this Junior year but they are too numerous to mention Now comes the last but lndeed the greatest year of their high school life The class had begun in their freshman year doing great things and accomplish ng wonders and continued to do so throughout their school life They proved themselves capable of great things In athletics they showed a fine spirit of real sportsmanship They did not however neglect their studies for their sports That rs shown by the fact that Kenneth Wilson and George Klohr won membership 1n the National Athletic Scholarship Society interruped 28 who was very proud of this group of students I-Ie felt sure that 24 had succeeded in convincing Father Time that he and his brothers were correct I-Ie saw that a pleased look was taking the place of the frown that had been on the old man s face at the beginning of the conference They have set high standards went on 24 and it will call for the constant and continuous efforts on the part of the students to come to keep these standards hlgh Have I not convinced you Father that the people are not wasting their time not only the young people but the older ones? They have been busy helping these boys and girls in various vuays for left to themselves very fevt of these young people would have advanced as far as they have But 3. T if l 0112 tj Cl' uo ' Qidfdfgf encouraged by far-seeing parents and helped by teachers, who more than all others make use of their time, they have been able to attain these heights. My boys, said Father Time, I see now that I was wrong. There are a few humans who waste their time, but the greater number do not. You have used as an example a class of boys and girls I realize that the hope of the world lies in these young people I only hope that most of them are like these They are Father was the unanimous reply Then spoke the old man go back to your places I am content And Father Time walked away down the dimly lighted hall with a lighter heart and soon the class of 28 went down in his book as history PROPHECY OF CLASS OF 28 Time continues to deal kindly with the members of the class of 28 It seems only a few years since the class of 28 marched through the doors descended the time worn steps and started on life s Journey Often we have thought of the happy days spent during our four years at M H S and of old friends and wondered what success in life some have had We have followed with interest the fortunes of others with whom we were more closely associated Thirty years have passed by In this year of 1958 the World s Fair was held in Mattoon Since my duties as president of the Northeastern Ohio State College permitted I decided to pay a short visit to the new Mattoon concerning which I had heard a great deal I planned to visit the high chool which was the hope and aspiration of all Mattoon when we graduated Also I wanted to see the Fair and as many of my classmates as possible T save time I took the International Air Route plane number forty six from my home at Warren Ohio to Mattoon We made the trip in exactly two hours and twenty two minutes not allowing for five stops I am informed that Mattoon is at present a city of approximately one half million inhabitants It has grown rapidly since 1928 when the industrial drive was started Aided by the members of the class of 28 many of whom stayed to cast their fortunes with those of the city it has become the metropolis of central Illinois I met one member of our class on the plane William Johnson who is a lawyer for the Brown Shoe Company This company has grown about Neil Curry who recently made himself famous by encircling the world in twenty four hours He devlsed a method to offset the force of gravity and ascending into the air stayed in one plane while the earth made one rotation and then landed HIS invention was not yet in practical use so we logged along in the old type of plane at 200 miles per hour On arriving in Mattoon Mr Johnson escorted me around the city to see some of our old friends We went first to the city hall since .Iesse Jr 2 KQQK FX rp .x Q-Tl' L .-L -Q .J . Mr. Johnson took me around to see what development the Brown Shoe Company had made. Here I was surprised to find Mr. Wayne Thayer, the president of the company, with Lois Cook as his private secretary. While we were in the factory district, we visited the offices of Degler and England, manufacturers of the new type of plane used in the recent trip to Venus. We went to see Howard Bartlesmeyer's factory where he makes fuelless motors for his Chevrolets and then to the factory of Rawson and Michaels, who make television machines. I had read with great interest of the founding of the Central IlliI1OiS University, and was anxious to see it. I was acquainted with Gerald Wood- ard, the president, from radio talks and from his books. It speaks well for the class of '28 that so many of its members are professors here. The famous lawyer David McDonald' the renowned physicist and inventor Virgil Harker Walter Humes professor of German John Freeman and John Rexroat professors of Agriculture and Edna Roberts assrstant professor of Home Economics are all there The U S Grant Hotel that was built in 1928 is st1ll standing and is efficiently managed by Daniel Drennan Although it is an old building and others have been built since it remains one of the old landmarks I was anxious to see the high school now called the Central High School whrch occupies the site of the old building of our days I was delighted to find Mildred Punkhouser its principal with Louise Butler as her secretary Eugene Bridges was the coach and had turned out many winning teams It seemed strange that many of the members of the class of 28 should return to the school and teach but perhaps rt is because they enyoyed the honor of being connected in some way with the high school which they boosted rn 1928 Among those whom we found teaching were Martha Ozee history Helen Wilkinson domestic art Edith Relsner mathematics Marguerite Myers physical education and swimming Lenore Schafer director of music and Doro thy Warren teacher of Latin Our next stop wa at the New Memorial Hospital where we met Irma and Clover Andrews and Dorotha Crowder all of whom were highly trained nurses There we inquired for the world famous surgeon Lucille Siler who had successfully performed an exceedingly delicate operation the day before Later we paid a visit to the new palatial Washington Theatre which waS deslgned and built by the Wilmelm and Rider Contractors The theatre is under the management of Mr Robert Laughlin who has been very success ful in furnishlng high class entertainment We had the good fortune to See a picture in which Edith Agnew starred After the shovx we went to the confectionery which we learned was one of a Cham owned Jointly by Rachel Robrock and Martha Sherer There we saw Theresa Welch famous hair dresser and beauty specialist and Marguerite Crum and Myrtle Osborne librarians of the City Library fCont1nued on Page 453 Z-IEQJNE Cf A N-w .M lj T Tl BETA-gxifvm my -ae ! ! 7 I r Z 1 , , , . f , , , . Q MY FIRST OHV IN HIGH SCHOOL Oh, 'tis well that I remember how that .Ianuary day I did cross another milestone of that long end strenuous wayg There I stood a blissful maiden, my diploma in my hands, Aw' 'twas true that I was going now' to dwell in fairer landsg Fairer lands of sunkist roses lands of clear bright skies of blue. There Id roam through halls of learmng and Id bask in knowledge neu Iror I held the key that opened all the doors along the w ay And through them Id pass tomorrow and forget the yesterday Oh you god of mirth and laughter with your sense of humor linen How you must have smiled to see me wander back to four fourteen Why it seemed as I went onward I was walking to my doom And I knew there gazed upon me those weird faces in the room I was weak and all that courage that I felt was surely mine Had all scattered to the four winds leaving me to sigh and pine But I guess it was the irony of that fate as people say And this one Just one of many of the tr1cl-cs that fate would plav Then I went to all my classes learned who all my teachers were Given lessons but the assrgnments surely all were Just a blur Classes pupils teachers lessons then at last the day wa done Rise she said and then I wondered should I walk or should I run Home again at last its over and I wonder am I glad Maybe not but since it s over I do not feel quite so sad Thus it ended Mx First School Day day that I can ne e forget Oh I loxe the memory of it and I loxc the frie d I rnet l1Tl'Il4l Llilgr K E ,,- ' I 'KX -an-: X, l A-BB' 1 ? But I must make hay while the sun shines and think only of my joys and of how the children love me, for only today they all went away with sad faces because school was dismissed at 2:30 o'clock on account of the heat. I have felt worried, for I'm sure many of them rushed to the old swimmin' hole to drown their sorrows Im always glad when the first week has passed for then the scrubs are beg1nn1ng to find thelr way through my winding halls Then their faces begin to take on that happy expression which proves to me that they are going to make loyal supporters of our high school What do I see now? Is that one of our football heroes wlth his hair all curled? Andy' Andy' surely you haven t fallen for one of my fair Coeds My' My' everyone doesnt know what a popular place th1s is M boys and girls are so enthusiastic that they inspire certa1n quadrupeds to seek an education And Ill confess that the many eyes in my head become misty when I see them heartlessly torn from my embrace Work IS but one of the many th ngs done in my old rooms When our football veterans won a decisive victory from Danville we had a rouslng celebration And My' how my walls did echo with the happy cheers But I caught my breath with fear when Mr Culberson began calling boys names by introducing Paul Milam as Dynamite and I guess Paul was a little scared too-and he even accused Dick Boyle of being selfish Then Dr Cor'ey made a speech He sald he liked the rattle and bang of a high school celebratron Mr Euler didnt know whether he meant the band or not but all was settled peaceably More celebrating today We beat Urbana in football My halls rang with rahs and speeches from everybody No celebrating today Exams are on When my children all enter with serious faces I know that exams have come again The teachers insist on keeping the spirit of the pupils from rising too hlgh Hurrah' Hurrah' Arm stice Day' Armistice Day' and a football game with Hindsboro How sad and lonesome the children and I are today whrle the teachers are in Urbana at the Conference The only celebrating is done by Mr Pin negan when he gix es me a bath from head to toe Yes we ve had a good time since Xmas The intramural basketball tournament has been on Harold James team has vu on the trophy ji Pai -R:-4' 1 i is-rr lf' , .
