Gone was the security of elemen- tary school; we were on our own now. Within a few weeks, we settled into the routine and realized that junior high wasn’t that different than 6th grade. We learned to master locks, schedules, hallways and teachers, and looked forward to our trip to Great Adventure with our advisor, Mr. Cortese. 8th grade brought us back to MHS in a totally different manner. Classes got a little harder, but our class trip to Washington, D.C. was the highlight of our year. Who can forget that six-hour bus ride, buying those stupid hats, shaking Tip O’Neil’s hand, and toilet pa- pering the trees outside our hotel balconies? Freshmen Officers President— Chris Finnican Vice-President— Debbie Steidel Secretary—Bunty Burns Treasurer—Tracy Boyd Ninth grade — our first year in high school. Mr. Brooks was our class advisor, and with Mary Murphy and John Hansen as our Ding-A-Ling Duo, we almost won the competition. We finally got to be a part of the Vari- ety Show, JV and Varsity sports, and the senior band, which went to Bos- ton, Massachusetts. The year ended with a picnic and beach party at the Maratooka Club on the bay in Matti- tuck. In tenth grade, things started getting serious. Mrs. Wines and Mrs. Finn took over as class advi- sors, and we finally won the Ding- A-Ling Duo with Lisa Bartra and John Lee as head Ding-A-Lings. This was the year Mrs. Wines had a baby, right in the middle of Ding- A-Ling Week. We sold tons of M Ms to pay for our class trip, once again to Great Adventure, and ordered our school rings. Senior year has been great. At this writing, we are still selling magazines for our Spring trip to Florida. This year, the Mattitalk has been reorganized. Mrs. Grattan took over as Student Council Advisor, and a S.A.D.D. group has been formed. Mr. Tomaszewski is our class advisor, and maybe this year seniors can break tradition and win the Ding-A-Ling Duo contest. As we reflect on our high school years, we realize we have made strong friendships and memories that will last forever. Eleventh grade was a big year. We got our class rings and started forming college plans by taking the SAT’s and ACT’s. With the help of Advisor Mr. Reilly, we planned many car washes to help pay for our prom, at Brasby’s. This year, our Varsity Soccer team won the State Championships, and our Baseball team was Southeastern N.Y. Champs. We welcomed new biology teacher Mr. Roecklein, and many students participat- ed in an exchange program in Germany. With Chris Harty and Bob McCaffrey as Ding-A-Lings, we came in third place, but not with- out a fight. Class rings, ordered late in the tenth grade, finally arrived at the end of October. Excited classmates eagerly turned each other’s rings a total of 85 times for good luck and happi- ness. The prom committee diligent- ly planned the Junior Prom at the Tolendal Inn on May 18th. They worked hard to assure that everyone attending had a wonderful time. Im- portant tests such as the SAT, ACT, and the Achievements were pre- pared for and taken, not without a certain degree of pain. College deci- sions began to be formulated and several members of the class were inducted into the honor society. The class of 1985 will never forget their 11th year at MHS. Organized by Mr. Christy and Mr. Un- derwood, the retreat began on Monday af- tcrnnon. Students took busses to Shelter Is- land, then spent the first hour finding room assignments and roaming St. Gabriel’s large grounds. The retreat schedule was structured around large general group sessions, which were followed by small group discussions. A general session usually consisted of a guest lecturer who has had some personal experience with drug abuse. Speakers in- cluded a woman whose son was killed by a drunk driver, a Catholic priest who is a re- covered alcoholic, a woman in the Matti- tuck area whose father and husband com- mitted suicide due to alcoholism and whose two children are alcoholics, and a paraple- gic who is confined to a wheelchair because he was injured by a drunk driver. These large group sessions were followed by a small group discussion. Each small group consisted of ten MHS students and an adult group leader. Small groups provided the oppor- tunity for students to share their thoughts with peers, and peers with the opportunity to under- stand and appreciate another’s emotions and problems. Sunrise Sharing was an early-morning large group session during which students shared many important thoughts. Mike Heinbaugh from Illinois, the first person to openly share an experience, brought a great deal of insight to these sessions. Many people formed a close bond with Mike, and were able to share their experiences as a result. Of course, with ninety MHS seniors and ju- niors gathered in one place for two and a half days, social activities were varied and different. The sub-zero salt water diving contest, the piz- za party and dance, and the midnight cuddle-in provided entertainment for everyone. As the retreat drew to a close, participants realized that the purpose of this getaway was more than to educate students of the dangers of drug abuse; the retreat taught students to be better, happier people, to care about them- selves and others, and to know, always, that they have many close, caring friends. 52 Chistopher Talbot Brian Taylor Sharon Trainor James Trentalange Jeanne Tyler Donna Viola Joseph Vitale Stephanie Watson Robert Whelan Robert White Brian Williams Kristina Williams Yvonne Wilson Heidi Witschi Terence Wood Michelle Zuhoski Steven Zuhoski 53 SOPHOMORES Todd Cibulski Sara Cichanowicz Donald Cooper liana Corcoran Amelia Corsi Sarah Cottrell Elizabeth Creato David Csicsak Cynthia Czujko Wendy Davis James Deerkoski David Dickerson Robert DiGregorio Kristen Dries Timothy Drum Darlene Bakowski Marsha Baldwin Bradford Barker Horace Barnes Antonio Bassi Rebecca Bauer William Becker Karen Bergmann Valerie Bolobanic Stephen Boyd John Brooks Todd Burlingame David Chang Jonathan Cherry Diane Chituk 54 Thomas Emperor Rochelle Fabb Deidre Fogarty Carolyn Gabusi Leonard Green Amy Grigonis Lara Grigonis Carmen Giuliani Stacie Hanus Scott Hassildine Peter Heard Bruce Hendry Brian Hildebrandt Robert Hildesheim Judith Huelle John Ireland Stephanie Jablonski Stacy Jemmott Christine Jones Brenda Kaelin Jeffrey Kaminsky Julia Kavanagh Brian King Donna Kowalesky Henry Kozen James Krupski Kristen Kugler Laurie Kull Kelly Langan James Lark Robert Larson John Lizewski Denise MacDonald Susan Maynard Kelli McCann Diane McDermott Kristen McDowell Michael McOahan Cindy McKasson John McNulty Donna Messina Valerie Meyer George Molyneaux Ruth Monk John Moore 55 Marathon Man It’s no secret that this year’s Sophomore Class ad- visor is cute, but did you know that his favorite color is beige and his lucky num- ber is 15? Mr. Underwood at- tended Mercy High School in Riverhead, and then went on to Brockport State Uni- versity in New York. Before coming to Mattituck, he was employed by the Shoreham Nuclear Power Plant (maybe that would account for his glowing personality!) He be- came a teacher because he enjoys working with young people. Mr. Underwood felt welcomed in our school and had no trouble adjusting. As you know, his favorite past time is running, but he’s al- ways ready to partake in a good game of baseball or basketball. He keeps himself active by working with the substance abuse program and by coaching 7th grade baseball. As for advising the Sophomore Class, Mr. Un- derwood enjoyed a fun and eventful year. T.H. He came in the disguise of a Biology teacher, but he’s really a fun-loving guy. His name is Mr. Roecklein and he's the 9th grade class advisor, 7th grade volleyball coach, and 7th grade softball coach. We all know this terrific man, but few of us know anything about his history so this is a crash course in “everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask about Mr. Roeck- lein”. Many of us don’t know that his favorite color is blue and his favorite number is 57. Football and hockey are his favorite sports. It is a well kept secret that Mr. Roecklein’s nick-name in college (which by the way is St. Lawrence University and SUNY at StonyBrook) was Rocko! After leaving New York State Conservation Dept, to become a high school teacher he found it was very easy to get acquainted at Mat- tituck. He says. “Everyone is very helpful and friendly”. 61 8th GRADE Scott Armburst Teresa Bannon Bonita Barnes Daniel Bassi Tabitha Bauer William Bergen Helen Bieling Sharon Blackman Eric Bokina Keith Boyd Elizabeth Brickley John Brickley Sean Bryan Kathleen Burns Robert Byrnes Lola Cartselos Steven Charnews Michele Chituk Richard Chute Neal Cichanowicz Janet Coleman Kerry Commander Charles Cook Joanne Corsi Brian Cybulski Scott Czujko Eric Digons Geraldine Domaleski Richard Dries Jennifer Dunn Lisa Egan Brian Ellwood Daniel Fagone Joanne Ficner Robert Finn Thomas Fox Heather Freeman Jennifer Froatz Peter Gans Donald Gatz 62 Catherine Giannone Jason Ginas Tracy Glover Maureen Gremler Danielle Grzegorczyk Ted Gwydir Chantel Hajek Steven Harned Tracey Harned Sharon Harris Catherine Harty David Hauslcr David Heard Thomas Hewlett Gerry Horton Karen Horvath Margo House Donald Hunter Robert Issem Leona Jantzen Dena Jaquillard Dennis Jazombek Laura Jens Rebecca Jens Renee Kaelin Brendan Kelly Daryl Kettrick Sarah Kettrick Cheryl King Eric Kordoski Donna Kosciusko Caryn Kujawski Keri Kurpetski Valerie Larson George LePre Jodie Lizewski Frank Lyburt Matthew McKay Bruce McCaffery Denise McCaffery George McDowell Tamee MacNish Steven Marquardt Bonnie Mathews 63 Patrick Mathews Jennifer Michalecko Jeanette Miesner Angelo Milazzo Deanna Moleff Pamela Moore Greta Morchel David Navarra Raymond Nemschick Robert Nine Jennifer Nostrom Dianne Olmsted Erik Olson William Pirn Adrianne Poliwoda Christopher Posteraro Eric Pylko Todd Rakowicz Lori Rayburn Lisa Reyer Henry Romanowsky William Sanok David Scheer Holly Smith Tonya Spence Patrick Steffen Dawn Swiatocha Katherine Swiatocha Mary Tangney Scott Thilberg Caren Trainor Mark Trentalange Kim Trojanowski Kelley Watts Sharon Whelan Tracy White Tanya Wigley Christopher Wilshusen Lauren Womak Jennifer Woodhull Jeffrey Young Pamela Zahra Scott Zahra Gregory Zanieski Cheryl Zolner 64 7th GRADE Amy Ellwood Michael Ettlemeyer Keith Fleming Kristine Flowers Robert Fox Scott Gammon Matthew Gans Christian Glander Terri Glover Kevin Goldsmith Christopher Bagshaw Sonia Baldwin John Barker Juliana Bartra Deborah Bell Laurel Boner Jeffrey Booker Michelle Casper Robert Celic Donna Charnews Andrew Christianson Patricia Chute Kathleen Commander Cathleen Cox Willie Mae Davender Edward Goodwin Tyrone Goode William Green Asha Hamid Mary-Pat Harbin Douglas Hausler Walter Haines David Hommel Lawrence Hofer Maryellen House 65 Timothy Ireland James Jablonski Lisa Jacobs Craig Jones George Johnson Laurie Johnson Randy Johnson James Kaminsky Colleen Kotzky Dawn Kirby Deborah Kosciusko Kerri Kreh Andrew Kujawski Edward Kugler Robert Kull Bruce Land Thomas Lark Valerie Lessard David Manerel Joseph Marquardt Jeanne Mazzaferro Kimberly Mealy Nicholas Methven Laura Milner Kenneth Miller Julie Moore Michael Moore Lizbeth Neefus Robert Neese Sean Nicol Lisa Okula Chris Oliver Kim Pacholk Dawn Pearson Scott Pirn Robert Profita Emily Reeve Kevin Romanowski Dana Rosenstreich Victor Rutkowski John Rogozinski Victoria Schoenhaar Malinda Shelby Stephan Shepish Michelle Sieczka 66 Todd Sigurdson Shawn Smiley Diana Stepnoski Jason Strezepek Donna Strickland Lisa Strickland Anna Sullivan Lahra Tillman Charles Tyler Constance Tyler Wallace Voegel Donna Wilcenski Charlie Witczak Theresa Urist Erik Williams 67 ACTIVITIES 69 CABINET Seated: Jennifer Wilson, Patty Rudolph, Joanne McNulty.
