Her cheerfulness and quick smile brighten the day of all who come in contact with her. Her organizational ability, her cheery helpfulness, her overflowing patience and her sincere con- cern never cease to amaze us. Aware of the many problems which confront students ranging from jammed lockers to conflicts with teachers, her calm approach leads us in the right direction; she exhibits her competence and abilities in the many ways that she attends to school business. Devoted to the school and to the people within it, she personifies the expression “above and beyond the call of duty.” For the years that she has cared for and served all of us, we wish to say: Thank you, Madeline Haas. They are responsible for the purchasing of textbooks and classroom equipment, the hiring of school personnel, transportation and the repairing of school facilities. The members of the Board of Education spend much time discussing and deciding school matters. It is because of the consideration and devotion of the members that Mattituck High School is one of the best schools on the East End. 4 A D M I N I S T R A T I O N Roger Burns District Superintendent Bruno Brauner Assistant District Superintendent Carolyn Norklun Secretary to the Superintendent Madeline Haas High School Secretary Dorothy Stengle Account Clerk Martha Beebe Assistant Business Manager William Ellwood Assistant High School Principal James Gilvary Elementary Principal Cynthia Michaelis Elementary Secretary Enrico Peppe Business Administrator 6 Joan Lademann Guidance Secretary Paulette Hanson Guidance Secretary Dorothy Bakowski Nurse Margaret Templeton School Psychologist Lee Elwood Director of Guidance James Christy Guidance Counselor. Mr. Huey says special recognition should go to the defensive part of the team with three shut-outs and only allowing 14 goals in 12 games. The offense also did a good job with Carl Langhorne scoring 8 goals and Jim Mitchell scoring 11 goals. The scoring was aided by Bob McCaffery s 15 assists. front row: Terence Wood. John Hansen. The girls had a league leading record of 16-0. Easth- ampton and Westhampton presented the team with its toughest competition. A high point in the season occurred when the girls travelled to Easthampton to defeat that previously unde- feated team. In post season play the girls were seated second in the county; unfortunately they fell short of their mark and lost in the quarterfinals. From an individual standpoint the team had a conference champion, Beth Christy, and two undefeated players, Sharon Tuthill and Lisa Grattan. H E A L T H S E R V I C E 0 F F 1 C E S E R V I C E 109 no Ill The Prom That Almost Wasn't . . . p R o M All dressed up and nowhere to go. That could have been the theme of the 1981 junior prom at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 15, the day of the prom. Junior class advisor, Frank Kujawski, learned that the Mattituck Manor, where the prom was to be held was locked up tight. The manager of the hall had been evicted by the owner because he had failed to pay $15,000 in rent. But what about the prom? The juniors had paid $35 a couple, rented tuxedos, raised $750 for a band and spent $250 on flowers for the king and queen. And on Friday morning, there was no Manor for the prom. So Mr. Kujawski called William Brasby, the owner of Brasby’s Restau- rant in Aquebogue, who agreed to house the event. In spite of the confusion caused by the last minute change of location, the junior prom was a success. Brasby s Restaurant outdid themselves in catering the event, and there are many happy memories for all who attended the 1981 junior prom. Girls’ Leaders The Atlantic Pacific Mathematics League is a national organization whose purpose is to encourage problem solving activities and help iden- tify mathematically-talented students. Our team consists of students in grades 10-12. This year there are approximately 20 members. There are six contests held during the school year. Each contest consists of six challenging mathematics questions. The top ten scores for each contest are combined for a total team score. Schools with the highest scores are declared national, state. or county winners. The Girls Leaders Corps is a National Organization that consists of girls in grades 9-12. A girl has to meet several criterias in order to be in Girls Leaders; a girl must pass a physical fitness test, obtain three recommendations from faculty members and maintain a certain aver- age. Why won’t they be my friend? I thought school would be a beginning, but it’s just another dead end. I really am not different. I really am the same. It’s not my fault I’m like this, I’m not the one to blame. I was the victim of a car. It didn’t even stop. It ran me down and left me there, there on the pavement top. The scar is only part of it. I’m lucky to be alive. The doctors didn’t think I’d make it, but somehow I survived. So please listen to me. Its your friendship that I seek. I don’t want to be a favorite. But don’t treat me like a freak. So please don't leave me lonely I want to join the game. Don’t you understand, behind this mask . . . I'm just the same. by Dorinna Suglia First Place - Poetry One night in the life of a table I sat in dark and silence, waiting for her to return I’ve seen her hurt so often, and I wish that she would learn The man she loves is vicious, but she’s stayed with him for years And the language that he uses, makes me want to close my ears And though I want to tell her, all those things I’ve heard him say I know she couldn't hear me, even if there was a way I know he doesn’t love her, but I only wish she knew And I’ve really grown to hate him, for the things he’s put her thru And when she finally came back home, she slammed and kicked the door And judging from her actions, she was hurt more than before Her tiny fists were pounding on my face so smooth and bright She threw her head upon me, and with me she spent the night And as she cried, I trembled, as the tears from her eyes fell I couldn’t feel the pain in her, yet I knew it must be hell And though I felt so useless, cause I couldn’t say a word I listened to her speaking, and it sounded so absurd She said that it was over, and that she would take her life So she went into the cabinet, and withdrew a deadly knife She put the blade upon her wrist, and slit it as she cried She watched her blood flow over me, and layed there till she died And knowing I’d be lonely, cause I lost my only friend Inside of me felt happy, cause she’d never hurt again. by Debby Smith First Place - 3-D Michael Dickson 120 First Place - Graphics Kathy Hubbard Third Place - Poetry As the leaves dismounted She stood reflecting Fifteen years ago — The nightmares, anguish, pain knelling down, she stroked the jagged inscription fingertips shivering as they touched the word Mother She stood again She quickly turned and buried the past by Jennifer Jens Fourth Place - Poetry Dusty, emerald clouds splash Venice with soft, muted colors.
