: THE REFLECTOR MHS 1971 i In Appreciation of Mr. Arthur McCaw The day will soon come when a student can walk past room 31 and not see the face of Mr. Arthur McCaw. We will miss you, Mr. McCaw. In the past 35 years you have taught dozens of people their sines, cosines, angles, and triangles. It will not be the same around here without you. For all those years of teach- ing students the mysteries of mathematics, we thank you. The entire student body wishes you a fond farewell, sir. 2 Board Of Education Barney Sidor Smith Pearsall Walter Dolim Vincent Bialcski Joseph Deerkoskie Education is the keystone in the arch of freedom and progress. Mr. Roger Burns, Principal Mattituck High School has experi- enced a tremendous growth in spirit and activity which directly reflects your abilities as leaders. You, as sen- iors, have found yourselves in leader- ship roles, have assumed the necessary responsibility and have moved your organizations into efficient and effec- tive action groups. This experience is a vital part of your total education, for never before has there been a greater need for lead- ership; both in our nation and throughout the world. May I congratulate you on your past performance and wish you continued success. s Mr. Bruno Brauner, Vice Principal An anxious world watches, half in fear and half in hope, as its young people struggle for an ever-greater voice in its affairs. Some of our young adults, despairing over the world’s condition, have de- cided that the extreme measures are justified. Others, reluctant to abandon values and traditions established during centuries of ex- periment and thought, have chosen more moderate means of ex- pressing their need for greater involvement. A very few have opted out altogether. My hope is that you have been provided, during your years at Mattituck High School, with the means to reason your way to modes of behavior appropriate to the difficulties you will face; that the social and intellectual problems which will confront you will find you ready. My hope for a lifetime filled with satisfaction and pride in ac- complishment goes to you all. I wish you an affectionate farewell. The scene changes but the as- pirations of men of good will persist. — V. Bush 7 CUSTODIANS Mrs. A. Sterling Mrs. J. Bochan Mr. H. Habitant Mr. E. Adams Mr. V. Grabowski Mr. H. Charkow Mr. J. We are gay, but we can be serious. Our hearts are light, but we know our responsibilities. The challenge is set before us — to give our best for we can do no more. We look to our elders for guidance in our search for understanding, for they have knowledge that only maturity can bring. The sun rises to light the path. We have far to go be- fore it sets. 11 The Kindergarten MORNING FRONT ROW (L-R): B. Alec, H. Armstrong, V. Haas, P. Gate, D. Suglia; SECOND ROW: L. Schwicker, H. Fisher, P. Rudolph, M. Berdinka, P. VAIL, JR. 1953-1968 I had a friend he lived and died in mighty silence and with dignity, left no book, son, or lover to mourn. Nor is this a mourning-song but only a naming of this mountain on which 1 walk, fragrant, dark, and softly white under the pale of mist I name this mountain after him. 89 THE NORTH FORK BANK TRUST CO. PAX VOBIS CUM ET ET IN TERRA PAX jiggey-lainia- -jan-ski Why do we never get an answer When we’re knocking at the door With a thousand million questions About hate and death and war? ’Cos when we stop and look around us There is nothing that we need, In a world of persecution that is burning in its greed Why do we never get an answer When we’re knocking at the door Because the truth is hard to swallow That’s what the war of love is for. Between the silence of the mountains And the crashing of the sea, There lies a land I once lived in, And she’s waiting there for me, But in the gray of the morning My mind becomes confused. Between the dead and the sleeping And the road that I must choose. It’s not the way that you say it When you do those things to me. It’s more the way that you mean it When you tell me what will be And when you stop and think about it You won’t believe it’s true That all the love you’ve been giving Has all been meant for you. — Justin Hayward 93 96 « ■HU • ” J£Sr • u lw M • • ’’ 1 w . ’ HVir Hhmm,.
