The Sea is selective; slow at recognition of effort and aptitude but fast in sinking the unfit. Felix Risenbcrg The Reflector 1970 i MATTITUCK H SCHOOL MATTITUCK, NEW YORK The Reflector wishes to pay tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Roland Sherwood as they prepare to leave Mattituck High School. Public education in Mattituck has received sixteen years of devoted service from this couple who have consistently dis- played courage, conviction, foresight, and energy in meeting the challenges their careers have offered. Through every day during sixteen years both have expressed emphasis on a solid academic foundation; both have expressed good citizenship, love of god and country, and determination to perpetuate a heritage of the freedom, hard work, self-discipline, and concern for the worth of each individual which have made our country great. To the spirit of selflessness these teachers express, we respectfully dedicate our book. From The Captain's Table TO THE CLASS OE 1970 To those graduates about to begin a new decade, I commend to you the brightest pos- sible future. We look to the past in order to learn from our mistakes but our real hope lies in the future and with the thousands of young people like you graduating in June. Do not become discouraged with adversity but ever proud and confident in seeking and enlarging upon the good that is in all things and all peoples. We have tried to give you the right kind of start so necessary in life. What you do with your life from here on depends upon you and what you have learned in the past, as well as what you will do with it in the future. May you always keep faith in your God and yourself, for such a com- bination can never fail. Sincerely yours, William H. HISTORY OF THF CLASS OF 1970 It was a bleak day in June, 1958 when the adventurous Kindergarten class took different roads to elementary schools, never knowing when they'd meet again. But alas! In September 1966, the wanderers of 58 were reunited on the path to higher education. Freshmen ah, that was a year to remember! We were set loose upon two new teachers for their first experiences in a homeroom Mr. Peterson and Mr. Michelle. The Variety Show was our first big event. Of course the Freshmen came through with some terrific acts. On March 10th courageous chaperones First Row (L to R) L. Zuhoski, S. Mc- Bride, B. Gudson, T. Doroski, M. Klien, D. Sledjeski, J. Two members of our class will never forget that day. One was a boy who had something unexpect- edly drop in on his hair and the other was a girl who took off her coat while everyone set it to a certain tune and got the wrong idea. All in all, it was fun. Soon June came and so did a party to cele- brate it. The leaves started to fall once more and we were back in school. As Sophomores, we had to study very hard because of the many impossible regents in store for us in June. This was the year of the Sweet 16” parties which no one will forget. Especially a certain girl who would have made the Olympics in poll swinging.” Once again June came, along with another party. All of a sudden, before we could realize it, we were Juniors! What a year! In October we got measured First Row (L to R) N. Tapalion, J. Kessler, D. Jazombek, N. Zuhoski, B. Elliot, L. Milowski, G. Rich- ards, H. Bochan, M. Stearns, P. Lindsay, M. Hansen, B. You’d think maybe we would get an inferiority complex! This year we not only got to participate in the Variety Show but also in the Junior-Senior Play. Soon June came and we were determined to make our Junior Prom a success. Our theme was Days Of Wine And Roses” at which we crowned our Queen, Carol Koehler. Finally, we were there! We had really made it. We were SENIORS! In the first half of the year every- one was busily going crazy filling out applications for college and jobs. Then waiting with fingers 72 CLASS OF 1970 Mrs. Sherwood's First Grade Class crossed for replies. As spring approached so did our Senior Trip—April 1st. to the 4th. Four fun days in Washington. And to think that we were the first class to FLY! After recuperating from our trip we got working on the Jr.-Sr. Play once again. Then it came—the big day—June 21! As everyone proudly sat in his seat on the Senior steps listening to our principal and other speakers speak, we looked at one another wondering if we would ever see each other again. But just as we were separated in kindergarten and again joined together, we’re sure that we will again repeat this same happening and someday in the future again all be together ...
