The value or realization of such a respon- sibility is superbly exemplified by Mr. George Kreiling. A veteran of the Second World War and a graduate of Syracuse University, Mr. Kreiling is a firm believer in the American System. A student of history himself, he realizes the important role our generation must take in the future. He under- stands and fulfills the need to create in his students a responsible attitude toward citizenship obligations. Mr. Kreiling, we are glad to have you at MHS. For whether you are delivering a hilarious satire on modern advertising, extolling the virtues of a common stick, tracing the course of Western development, expounding upon the place of extrem- ism in society, or speculating on the brand of Teddy Roosevelt's mustache wax, you are leading your students closer to a future of intelligent, responsible living. «-«■ . ■ u (f Ai , « «.. Among the admirable qualities these men possess is one which draws respect from those who know and worked with them: respon- sibility. The members of our school board realize the important bene- fits that accrue to a community with a fine school system. This they demonstrate as they more than fulfill their obligations toward the young people of Mattituck. We would like to thank the Board not only for the service they render our town, but also for the fine example they set us. CHARLES O. FRAZEE, President Our Board of Education i Administration “Ours is the only country' deliberately founded on a good idea.” John Gunther Congratulations to you, the Class of 1965, the largest ever to graduate from Mattituck High School in its over fifty year history. Largest, not so much in terms of numbers alone, but largest in accomplishments. Your class has contributed greatly in building new traditions as well as contin- uing those of the past. You have earned the respect and admiration of your parents, fellow stu- dents, teachers and community. My richest reward has been the privilege of being part of your life these past few years. A seg- ment of my sincere best wishes for the fullest measure of success goes forward to each and every one as the brightest of futures possible unfolds before you. Our Assistant Principal That each one of our graduates becomes all that he is capable of being is the sincere wish of all of us at MHS. The road toward this goal is often confusing and beset with many obstacles. The academic qual- ifications are best met by good hard work while in school. However, the will to achieve and the con- scientious desire to succeed is nurtured in the home, the church and the community A strong sense of moral values is needed to develop and guide our conscience toward the attainment of those objectives that should be included in the goals of everyone. Among these we might include (1) The will to be morally right (2) The respect for law and authority (3) Loyalty to one's country (4) The recognition of the rights of others (5) The desire to be reverent in one's faith. It has been a pleasure to be associated with the Class of '65 and to have had so many of you in my classes. May each and every one be granted the opportunity to become all that he is capable of being MR. ROLAND SHERWOOD MR. VERNON STRUB Our Guidance Director It has been a real source of satisfac- tion for me to have had even a little part in your growing up. As you go out from MHS I offer my best wishes for your every success and happiness. Remember my saying, If you have a question ask it, if I don't know the answer I'll find out and then we'll both know. This holds true for the future ... do not hesitate to write or call us . . because, even though you have graduated, you are still part of our school family. The Administrative Staff Our Prom How difficult it is to de- termine exactly what contrib- uted most to making our Prom such a memorable affair! A first kiss..........the punch .... or perhaps it was simply a number of little things . . . for a boy, a flirtatious glance from Scarlett O'Hara. For a girl, it might have been an ar- duous gaze from a dashing Rhett Butler. Perhaps it was that magical moon, a luminary disc lovely against the black void of the deep May night. Or was it the hilarious con- fusion of the traditional Grand March . . . the uninhib- ited laughter emanating from a furious Mexican Hat Dance? . . . The soft radiance of a lovely queen, the winsome glances of the nine runners- up, or the suppressed laughter at Dwight's magnificent stum- ble as he mounted the steps to crown the queen? Whatever it is that plays an important part in each of our personaf memories of that Prom, one thing is painfully certain . . . that those joyous times, like those of the merri- ment at Tara, will all too soon be Gone With the Wind . 8 In charge of the largest senior class ever to grad- uate from our school, the senior officers had a job just to know who was a senior. Carrying on the busi- ness of the class increased as its size increased. Even finding a platform large enough for graduation exer- cises became a problem of major proportion. Hordes of cooperative students lightened the load of the of- ficers and kept the machine operating smoothly. The senior class can acknowledge with honest pride their part in bringing Mattituck High School new glory through a renewed interest in academic achievement and a vigorous school spirit. DWIGHT D. Pilar Teran Our Exchange Student This year AAHS, in conjunction with its student Council, sponsored a foreign exchange student from Quito, Ecuador. Pilar Teran came to us through the International Fellowship, Inc. Pilar, or Pili , was born on July 1, 1946, in Quito. She was raised by her parents on their large cattle and produce ranch outside the city. She attended La Dolorosa High School for girls from which she graduated in 1963. Pilar attended AAHS as a senior and took such subjects as English, World History, US History and Art. She took part in many school activities including the newly organized Spanish Club and the Annual Variety Show. Pilar also went to Washington with the Senior Class. Pilar resided at the home of Principal and AArs. William Liebeknecht. Upon her return to Quito, Pilar plans to continue her study of the guitar and follow her ambitions in the field of Art. Everyone at AAHS wishes Pili every possible success. We are sure she will have no trouble in achieving success as long as she con- tinues to be the wonderful person we found her to be. On Friday, October 2, 1964, Eliz- abeth Gumper's Student Freedom Party defeated Karen Eckert's V.I.P. party for President of the Student Council. Bill Lindsay rode in on Miss Gumper's skirttails for the post of Vice President. It was an exciting race . . . but the Gumper platform seemed to car- ry more weight with the student body. The Student Freedom Party fea- tured the following planks: Barbara Fliss and President Gumper make the morning announcements. THE STUDENT FREEDOM PARTY PLATFORM (1) Student Council meetings open to all students. (2) A spectator bus for all away games. (3) An award to the most outstanding Freshman athlete. (4) Dances after home games. (6) A new track. (7) Student advisors to aid new students. (8) Noon-time activities. (9) A separate awards assembly. (10) Improved cafeteria menus. (11) A suggestion box. (12) A Council that will act as the voice of the students. (13) A Pep Club. The slam of hammers, Jap- anese words and music, the wails of a despairing ticket com- mittee, and a general sense of frustration characterized our frantic preparation for the an- nual Junior-Senior Play. As al- ways, it seemed as if we would never be ready; as always, we muddled through. When the curtain fell after our last per- formance, we regretted the termination of a tremendously stimulating and educational ex- perience. The satisfaction we felt for a job well done will remain with us, forever. 9 We wait for the late, late bus. KINDERGARTEN First Row (L to R): K. Hub- bard, A. Richards, W. Gremler, G. Tandy, M. THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The National Honor Society was founded by high school principals to recognize students who are out- standing in scholarships, service, character, and leader- ship. A student becomes a member of the Society upon recommendation by the faculty and upon attaining an 85 average. Elections to the Society were held in February, when both Senior and Junior members were inducted and received membership cards and pins. The impressive in- itiation ceremonies were followed by a tea for parents, faculty and new members. JUNIOR MEMBERS: L to R First Row B. Berdinka, B. Ficner, K. Kewin, A. Bowers, D. Pearsall, C. What we saw from here on Friday, March 5th, was really a Sports Spectacular ! Parts of it were crazier than an old time silent comedy. After an appetizer in which our boys' volleyball team (guess they forgot to eat their wheaties, or something!) were beaten twice in two games (a perfect record, fellows) by the Mattituck Bulldogs (Fire Dept.), the real fun began! Spurred on by their four beautiful cheerleaders, Pottsy Llewellyn, Frizzy Haeg, Sexy Cortese and Fancy Pants Brigham, the faculty sharpshooters went into action against the MHS JV. The faculty lineup was more than impressive: Mad- man Mattice, Pretty Boy Ellwood, Bully Brooks, Jumpin' Jack Hussnatter, Harry Cari Charkow, and Droopy Drawers Brown. The actions of Mr. Adams and Mr. Raacke were beyond all words, so we couldn't think of names worthy of them. The JV team fared poorly during most of the game but they finally came through in the very last quarter to crush the faculty team in an overwhelming 58-56 victory! It was truly a Sports Spectacular , and we'd like to add that any who participated in the event, especially the older players, were Spectacular Sports!
