1988 MIRROR Mattawan High School 56720 Murray Street Mattawan, Michigan 49071 A LIFETIME OF DEDICATION The Mirror Staff proudly dedicates the 1988 yearbook to Mr. Mike Hall. He not only presents history in an interesting manner, but is able to take the events of the past and relate them to present day life in a way that makes his students eager to learn. While he is an outstanding educator, Mr. Hall is also known for his concern for his students as individuals. His caring attitude extends beyond his students to include his family. Last year he coached his son's little league baseball team to a first place standing. Mr. Hall and his family also spent time in Canada where they enjoyed sight-seeing and a Shakespeare festival. Mr. Hall's hobbies include indoor soccer, softball, shooting pool, collecting old weapons, and of course, reading histories. Thank you, Mr. Hall, for all of your concern and effort on our part. It is deeply appreciated. 2 Left: Did you see that? With their curiosity aroused, Mr. Avelis and Mr. Staron give an amusing glance to an interesting object. Below left: Look at him go! Greg Bibart stares unbelievingly at Mike Wolbers as he inhales his drink. Above: But it's lunch! On her way to her seat. Ginger Miner is spotted by someone who has better ideas for her food. Left: Are you looking for me? Kurt Zito plays hide-and-seek while waiting on the lunch line. Above: What are you looking at down there? Mike Boelman and Lloyd Brooks take a cat nap before the big game. Below: Oh no! Not that! Ellen Wdowicki, Brad Shaink, and Dana Cramer are obviously not enjoying what they're seeing. Above: Howdy, ya'II! Mr. Williams shows his versatility in the English language. Below: It's a rough life. Students, Brandi McKinney and Heather Turner relax and take a break during class. LOOK] 6 Vice President Kcrrie VanderRoest Secretary Natalie Nichols s e n ♦ i o r President Chauntel Stone Advisor Clark Balas The senior class has had four excellent years at MHS. We shared many great moments that will always be remembered. We have worked hard on fundraisers and plan on using some of our money to take a senior trip. We know that all that we have learned and experienced here at Mattawan will remain with us through the years. We hope the best for those coming behind us. Cherish the memories. These are the best days of our life. Live it to the fullest. The Class of '88 Treasurer Kris Whitman Trustee Kim VanTassell Look at these cuties ... And we said that we didn't like school. Face it, we loved it! Look at all the fun we had, and all the friends we have made, and the guidelines we have built for ourselves. Remember our distressful lunch hours just shootin' the breeze? School was basically something to complain about. Then that day came when they shoved us out those two big doors, and said Go on; live your life. Similar to the time our fathers threw us into the lake and said, Swim or drown. So much was expected from us then, just take a look now. School was the best care free time of our lives, preparing us for the future. Did we ever say thanks? Well, here goes, THANK-YOU MATTAWAN HIGH SCHOOL! Puzevic. future football coach. Laura Anderson, thrilled about scoring her point. There are times we all gaze into space, Dave Ross. Mrs. Kruzich, it looks like you've got a box load of work there. This year's 1987-88 yearbook staff has worked hard to give the readers a high quality publication. People do not realize the excessive amount of work involved. Many long hours have been spent in the classroom and after school as the staffers hurried to meet their deadlines. Jostens is furnishing an award for one of the schools that can meet all their deadlines. It is called the Pica Award, and one of the prizes is a computer which next year's class can benefit from. Right: What's Going On? Aimy Minor and Heather Alban are trying to figure out which baby is which. Below: Check Us Out! Tracy Schultz and Kerrie Van-derRoest are busy discussing the pictures for the yearbook. There were eight representatives from the senior class, three representatives from the junior class, and two representatives from the sophomore class. To be a member of this organization, the representatives had to collect twenty-five signatures, twenty-one from students and four from teachers. After that they had to be elected by the student body. The Student Council worked with the class officers to organize Homecoming and Snowcoming. They held food drives and organized an Adopt a Family program during the holiday season. They also held a Bread Lift for the March of Dimes. All in all it was a group worth watching. Kari Hall tries on the crown to be worn by the Homecoming King. Planning stages. This organization is one that is endorsed by the National Association of Secondary Principals to honor students for their academic achievements, character, leadership abilities, and service. The students that are chosen must have an overall grade point average of 3.5, and must score no less than eighty-five percent on their evaluation in character, leadership, and service by the faculty members. The advisor for the 1987-88 members is Mrs. Kennedy. This is her second year as their advisor. This year's National Honor Society members will not have any meetings or banquets. Mrs. Kennedy said there is not enough time to engage in these types of events, since the members are currently involved in many other activities. The new National Honor Society members will be inducted in the spring of this year. Mrs. Kennedy is known for her academic skills, making her a prime candidate for advisor. 71 A Glimpse At The Future Russell Berryman — “I think its working! Chad Corda — Aren't I cute? The Van Buren Skills Center offers training and education in areas ranging from business to construction. Attending the Skills Center can take the place of a college education, or it can be a valuable supplement to college. On the job training is often provided through either working in the coop program, or receiving a job placement for after school or weekends. Students who attend the Skills Center feel that it is an excellent opportunity to get a head start in the job market. P.M. Students Band: Looking Good Below: A moment for good friends. Chauntel Stone and Lisa Bellware hug after a long practice. Above: An inside look at the bandroom shelves where everyone just tosses their stuff. What It Takes Many students see band as an easy ''A or a cop-out class. Well, they are wrong. The Mattawan Band members make many sacrifices for this class. They give up their extra time for monotonous practices such as early morning sectionals, evening practices, summer practices that last for weeks and go all day, and of course their own personal, motivated practice.! Why do they do all this? It's for the excitement of competition and performing, for the great feeling of personal and team accomplishment. It's also for the thrill of winning and being their best. Each member gets out exactly what they put in and more. It really takes a special kind of person to be a devoted member of this wonderful class. With the Octet included, the choir totals at thirty students, all with fine voices. Though small, the choir represents itself well at concerts. Mrs. Overton has formed two special groups in place of the Select Choir. The Select Choir has been discontinued due to the lack of interest. These two groups are the Octet and the Quartet. The Octet consists of not eight, but nine members, due to a student transfer. It has five men and four ladies. Singing soprano are Amy Iciek and Carrie VanNiman. Accompanying the sopranos are altos Tallis Weeldreyer and Jill Russell. Tenors Kevin Hughes and Tom Shelton are joined in song by basses Mike Wilson, Brad Sams, and Derek Dejager. This group practices after school or when it is convenient for all the members. Four members comprise the Quartet. The students in this group are dedicated and devote much of their personal time to the success of the group. Amy Iciek, Tallis Weeldreyer, Kevin Hughes, and Mike Wilson are once again the members. The Club has spent most of the year raising money to pay for the new track which was installed last summer. They have been selling sections of the track to the school supporters. The Boosters are responsible for the awards banquets at the end of each sport's season. The Club is also in the process of purchasing new uniforms for some of the athletic teams. Tom Shelton, What did you say? 90 Bonjour, mes amis. The 1987-1988 French Club was established by Madame Schoenfeld, and it had a very successful year. The club was open only to students enrolled in French class. The meetings were scheduled for every other Wednesday. The dues were $3.00 a month, and it went towards food, drinks, and entertainment. This year the officers of the organization were: President; Pam Jepkema, Vice-President; Lisa Bellware, Treasurer; Dave Ross, and Secretary: Missy Crites. The officers work together to plan the many activities in which the members participated. The club was introduced to French culture by having a cheese tasting meeting, and a Mardi Gras party. Other activities the club was involved in were watching French movies and Pepe le Pew. The members also enjoyed playing French Trivial Pursuit. The group held a highflying fund raiser during the Christmas season by selling mylar balloons to the students and faculty. The World The Spanish students have been waiting a long time to get an organized Spanish club together as an extracurricular activity. This year there was enough interest in organizing a club and it was a great success. This year's advisor to the club was Mrs. Becker and the officers were President — Chris Harrell, Secretary — Marti Sage, and Treasurer — Lourdes Franco. The club had many activities this year and did some fund raisers. The club went on two field trips this year. The first one was on Saturday, September 19, at Kindleberger Park in Parchment. Spanish clubs from all the area schools got together and had a picnic. Marti Sage said, Being in the club gives you a chance to meet a lot of new people from different schools, and at the picnic, we met students from Spain. Jill Russell added that, The people from Spain spoke Spanish really fast! The other trip was to Mi-Ranchito in Oshtemo. The club watched the preparation of Mexican foods. The Spanish club did many fun things this year and they are hoping for an even better success next year. Janene Bohan and Laura Forester, CONCENTRATION! As a story, it is packed with suspense and is somewhat humorous, but as a musical, this yarn is filled to the brim with surprises and is totally hilarious. Auditions for this comical musical were held January 19, 20, and 21. Many people auditioned and were chosen for parts by directors Bruce Marks and Carol Overton. Although most cast members had never seen the musical, they were enthusiastic and prepared for the hard work ahead. Many events took place during this show. It seemed as though the Queen (Dana Cramer) didn't want her son, Prince Dauntless (Kevin Hughes), to marry. With help from the Wizard (Dave Schackow), all the princesses in the surrounding kingdoms were given tests they would fail. As the tale unwound, it became evident that even the Princess Winnifred (Tallis Weeldreyer) was going to have difficulty with the task ahead. Wishing her success were the King (Eric McConnell) his interperter, the Jester (Matt Downey), and Lady Larkin and Sir Harry (Amy Iciek and Tom Shelton), who had their own special reason for wanting success. Hard work and dedication were the keys to the success of this musical. Performances of Once Upon a Mattress were held March 18, 19, and March 25 and 26. too_________________________________________ Let's try it this way. Mattawan's golf team has been a tough competitor for the last few years and this year was no exception. Three people were voted to the all-conference team. They were senior Jon Smith, juniors Mike Wolbers and Jim Windon. For Wolbers, this was his second consecutive year on the all-KVA team. We can look forward to another year of his excellent golfing. Coach Win Pugh continued to keep his team among the top contenders in the KVA. They have been at or near the top of the league for the past few years and it looks as though they could continue this pattern. A high point of the season was the KVA jamboree in which they finished 1st. This led them to their overall 2nd place finish in the KVA, while the JV team continued to dominate by winning the KVA for the 8th consecutive year! With this type of impressive golfing we can always look forward to a successful golf team in the future. Just like many other sports in Mattawan golf is quickly on the rise and with a program like ours, it should be. Returning golfers next year will be Mike VanAntwerp, Ed Hamilton, Jeff Forden, Matt Adams, J.B. Holmes, John Hazelhoff, Joe Farrell, Jim Windon and Mike Wolbers. A second place trophy was won by the team at the Bronson Invitational. On October 3rd, the K.V.A. Tournament took place. There were some extraordinary performances made there. Back row (L-R): Coach John Hamilton, Doug Lyda, Kurt Zito, Derek Paulsen and Tom Boven. Front Row (L-R): Mike Charvat, Matt Cashen, Steve Sallee and Steve Lee. 140 Coach John Hamilton led Mattawawan to yet another K.V.A. championship last year. He has led three teams to K.V.A. championships in the last five seasons. There are eleven returning varsity baseball players this year. Last year the teams key players were Steve Sallee, Matt Cashen, Steve Lee and Derek Paulsen. Cashen set the school record for wins with nine and also contributed with his bat. Cashen also was voted to the All Conference Team. Steve Sallee continued his excellent hitting, batting a team high .478 and knocking out four homeruns. He did this in a relatively short period of time because he was plagued by a knee injury. Steve Lee pitched the team to four wins while finishing second in strike outs behind Cashen. Mattawan catcher Derek Paulsen turned out to be a pleasant surprise last season. He was called up in the early part of the season and he ended up hitting .327. Mattawan's jayvee team had a fine season also, finishing 16-3 overall and they had a spotless 10-0 record in the K.V.A. The whole team gave an excellent effort. Some key players were Kurt Reits, Tom Boven, Joe Kuipers, Jeff Sharpe, Brian Doxtater and Matt McNulty. Of these people Kurt Reits led the team with a .452 average while Tom Boven led the team with 25 RBI's. Boven and Joe Kuipers led the pitching staff with six and five wins respectively. Each of their earned run averages was under a one. Receiving awards were Boven — Most Valuable Player, Matt McNulty — Most Spirited and a well-deserved Most Improved Player went to Brian Doxtater. With all of this young talent coming and hours of hard work in the off season Mattawan could prove to be a feared contender. Steve Sallee readies himself for his next at-bat. Looking through the eyes of the batter as Tom Boven pitches. Wildcats congratulate Sallee af ter homerun. Mattawan Wildcats looking in on the action. 141 You Should See This! Will Softball Keep The K.V.A. Title? Last season the varsity softball team recaptured the K.V.A. title. It was a hard fought victory. This year there is a real good chance to repeat. Also, last season they went to the district finals and lost a tough battle to Lakeshore. The girls who made the K.V.A. All-Star Team were: Donna Gromak (pitching), Lorri Csom (centerfield), and Heather Wolf (designated hitter). Becky Furtwangler made the honorable mention K.V.A. team. Donna Gromak also made the district's first team for pitching. Since the spirit has risen at Mattawan, they hope that they will have a lot more fans rooting them on throughout the season. Good Luck Ladies! The team helps the batter by cheering, Smack it attack it that's the way to wack it! With Becky furtwangler and Heather Wolf J.V.'er Patti Stratton checks out the fans looking on, Donna Gromak delivers the in the bleachers, winning pitch. Coach Mike Cooper talks to his team about hitting. Come on you guys, you couldn't hit your way out of a wet paper bag! LeAnn Rothi stands intense with a three and two count. Jayvee Softball Junior varsity sports are the learning years. Last year the ladies had a rough year, but they learned quite a bit of new things. The freshmen are expected to help the team very much this year. They have a lot of good talent coming up, and that talent will help them tremendously. Go get em' Cats! The returning varsity ladies include: Kerrie VanderRoest, Heather Multhaupt, Lorri Csom, Becky Furtwangler, Donna Gromak, Heather Wolf, Tracey Gest, and Carrie VanNiman. Not pictured: Lourdes Franco. The K.V.A. trophy returns to Mattawan. Can the ladies hold on to it? Lady Spikers This year the Varsity ladies had a rebuilding season after losing nine of fourteen girls. Coach Butler cut the team down to twelve people this year for playing purposes. This year they had only three returning varsity ladies and five girls who played J.V., leaving four first year players. They had only one senior and six juniors, with two sophomores and two freshmen. They started off the season with a very inexperienced and young team. Next year they hope to come back with a strong team. M.H.S.
