For four years we were a family Thrown together by fate or destiny Or was it all just blind luck We ate toether, we breathed together As a single body We enjoyed our victories Whether they were individual or mass We grieved at our defeats Whether we fell as one or as a group We strove forward bravely With our friends and security Right behind us to push us on And catch us if we stumbled But on a nearing horizon comes the day When the end of the beginning will be here Can you hear the bells tolling Daring you to step forward and claim your future When graduation comes We will be together one last time This is the portal through which we must pass Alone At the doorway we will leave behind The constant support of our friends Their presence will still be felt And our memories will linger on Their absence will be mourned over During this time of letting go Some of us will grow stronger together And develop bonds for a lifetime But we must all realize That each of us will be following A different personal path . . . On the other side of the door Who knows what the future holds Or where it will lead us? We will brave the unknown. — Bret VanDuine CLASS MOTTO: Nothing is at last sacred CLASS COLORS: But the integrity of your own Navy B]ue GoIcl mind . . . Be always aware our prayers and thoughts are with you. Love, Mom and Dad 51 Amis, Friends Vanner Marie Guibal I enjoy adventure and came to America in search of just that. I want to meet neiv people and see the different customs of American Life. Becoming an exchange student seemed exciting, and I wished to get away from everyday life back home. Originally, I asked to be stationed in California, but . . . well, Michigan is another experience entirely. I like it here with my American family Sue, Dana, and Brooke Holley. I enjoy staying with them, but as to be expected I miss my family back home. I have found that school in Michigan is much easier academically. It is also more centered around social activities. I have more time to myself here in the U.S.A. Although I wish to see my family and friends again soon, leaving Michigan will be hard as 1 have enjoyed my time here. Patrik Hansson Many people ask me why I became an exchange student. I don't know what to say. I just got this crazy idea in the beginning of the year. I wanted to try something different for awhile. I have enjoyed my stay here very much. Life in America is similar to what I am used to back home in Coteborg, Sweden. Everyone is very nice to me and I enjoy staying with my American family, the Keelans. The only complaint I have is that they give me so much good food! The only thing I really miss is windsurfing, and it won't be long before I am home. For now, I am just enjoying my time here in Mattawan. 53 cbok iGorbachevi ool-bus eras! The Junior Varsity learned to work well together and were a competitive team throughout the season. The returning players, Julie Neuber, Shawn Argo, Rachelle Odden, Jennifer Hoikka, and Kris Weber, with a combined effort lead the young team. Freshmen Lori Csom, Donna Gromak, and Shelly Smith surprised the team with their speed, dribbling, and shooting abilities. They will definitely contribute to the team next year. The J.V. Team is once again coached by Roger Brown. He keeps the team in good spirits and is able to teach them a great deal about the game of basketball. It is evident that he enjoys working with the young ladies and likewise, they enjoy working with him. This Is Wildcat Country! Front Row (l-r): Angel Bowling, Jodi Brady, Cathy Bower, Heidi Cyomak. Those fans who watched The Varsity Women's Basketball Team came because it was an exciting team to watch. In many games, it was left until late in the 4th quarter before a definite winner could be predicted. In one game vs. Galesburg-Augusta this didn't happen until a last second shot was made. The team, coached by Tom Short, always had something up their sleeve to surprise their opponent with. The captains, Jackie Hawes, Rachelle Triplitt, and Amy Young added enthusiasm and a great deal of talent to the team. Looking for a winning combination. At The Height Of Intensity . . . This year's captains for the team are sophomore standouts Laura Forrester and Heather Timm. The team consists of 1 senior, 4 sophomores and 2 freshman. The team is running middle of the pack in the K. V.A. There has been a great deal of improvement with this young team. The amount of sacrifice and pride that is put forth into their running will definitely result in a break through to make a name for themselves in the future. 106 Running For The Gold Front Row(l-r): Dennis VjnTassell, Bryan Gunderson, Jeff Babbitt, Mark Wolf, Scott Ferriell, Eric Lewandowski. He tries to teach the runners to be able to individually coach themselves for the future and, at the same time, work as a team to better their times. This is the perfect example of how the combination of teamwork and special friendships can build a very successful team. There is a mixture of captains this year, with senior Mike Hizer and junior Chad Thompson. Mike Hizer played a key leadership role in leading the Wildcats to capture their second consecutive K.V.A. win. The team is a possible contender for a future state team. 107 Our Golfers Topped Off Check out the big time concentration on Jon s face. Lisa, fighting an uphill battle. This year's powderpuff game was a mixture of enthusiasm from the coaches, hard competition from the players and of course a bit of humor from the cheerleaders. The scoring began early in the first half with the upperclassmen taking the lead. Jodi Smith ran a Rodney 9 pattern to put a quick six points on the board. However, the extra point attempt failed after a fumble in the backfield and the score remained 6-0. The underclassmen fought back after a fumbled punt by the upperclassmen. Julie Neuber swiped the loose ball and proceeded to run in for the underclassmen's first score of the night. After a missed extra point the scoreboard read upperclassmen 6, underclassmen 6. In the second half, Jodi Brady, running a Rodney 9 again, broke loose of the underclassmen's fighting defense to Jack the upperclassmen's score up to 12. After a successful extra point the score read upperclassmen 14, underclassmen 6. The clock ticked down and the '' buzzer sounded with the final score reading: Upperclassmen — 14 Underclassm en — 6 Underclassmen rejoice after a touchdown. 115 Fall Cheerleaders Front Row (1-r): Denise Koning, Jenny Keelan, Melissa Carlson. The other captain, Dion Morgan, was in his coach's opinion, the hardest working individual on the team. These player's developed leadership and confidence as the season progressed. This was one of the most enjoyable years for the coach, Ed Staron. The kids all worked hard. We have no one outstanding player, so winning takes a team effort. They have a great desire to win. The elections were held late this year, the school wasn't positive that there would be a council of students. Progress has been made in great strides. In the future years, the council will be getting more active and involved in school decisions. The council is constructed with two representatives from each class and a Treasurer, Secretary, Vice-President and President. The council is there for a variety of reasons. The most important is to try and bring concerns and questions from the student body to the administration and try and bridge the gap, and keep the communication strong. Many times students are faced with problems and they feel there is no place to turn. The council was elected by their student peers , to try and bring these problems into focus so something can be done. The council works hard to provide a better atmosphere. This year the council set up a tutoring program. This was designed to match a student tutor, who is highly recommended by the teachers with a student needing help in a subject. It was found to be very beneficial. Sometimes an explanation from a peer is so much easier to understand. The council worked on other things, a visitation program set up for the eldery, for example. The council also worked on trying to brighten the gymnasium with a wildcat mural, and a posted track record. In the last few years apathy towards school spirit was a big concern, this year's council dropped the topic and chose not to spend valuable time on the subject. A suggestion box was added to help communicate ideas or concerns from the Student Body. The council hopes that in future years the students will realize the council is there to help the student body and take advantage of their service. One of this year's problems was world hunger, and although some of the solutions our team came up with and sent to judges at J of M were somewhat zany, we were able to place third over all. 151 Upperclassmen at Mattawan have the opportunity to attend the Van Buren Skills Center, located in Lawrence, Michigan.
