Hut the time goes by fast You’re growing up. your childhood is a thing of the past. You did it, you’re a Sophomore You know you have two more years to live for. Now you’re a Junior, you're getting close to the top You keep pushing and you never want to stop. You finally made it, you feel you’re number one. You dream of days at Lake Michigan and laying in the sun. The final day is drawing near You want to yell for joy, instead you cry a tear You real ire you don’t want it to end. Where will you go now? And what about your best friend? What’s going to happen to the memories everyone shared Will they just drift away as if no one cared? The day is here the day you dread You fight hack the rears until your name is read You walk up to the stage with your head held high They hand you your diploma, now you begin to cry You finally made it, but you still don’t realize how. What that piece of paper is saying is, go out and face the REAL WORLD By Sherri Pare CLASS OF 1985 Class Colors: Royal Blue And Gold Class Flower: White Rose Class Motto: Remember Yesterday, Dream Of Tomorrow, But Live Today. Graduation: May 31, 1985 PRESIDENT: Shelli Boelman VICE PRESIDENT: Kurt Pugh On May 31, 1985, our Senior Class will have gathered as a whole tor one last final time. Some of us have shared our entire school days together; others of us just a few. Everyone's memories of days at Mattawan High School will be different, but along with these differences will be many similarities. The thrill of victory watching our floats take a first place, the laughter from watching classmates do skits in pep assemblies, the excitement of getting ready for the big prom, and the anxiety of hoping for one more touchdown at a big game are memories shared by many of us. It is true these days are through, but we will all look to the future knowing we can grasp our goals, for we are the class of 1985! TREASURER: Shawn Bourdo 19 QUENTIN D. For nearly 100 years. The Upjohn Company nas thrived in a style that is peculiarly American: as a family of employees whose efforts, in turn, help improve your family's quality of life. With the imagination that produces in-novation and the heritage of a special country doctor caring that puts your welfare above all. the story of our progress has been written. From the invention in 1884 of the “friable pill, the first pill that would readily dissolve: to the first oral digitalis for heart patients in 1919; to the first highly effective anticoagulant and the mass pnxiuction of penicillin during World War II: to tin intn -ductKHi of oral anti-diabetes medicine in 1957: to today, when Upjohn is punx ering the development of prostaglandins.. .giving us vast insists into mans biochemical universe and offering the promise of new and more effective ways of combating disease. The future will be nothing but fruitful. Because from the beginning, what has constituted our uniqueness also has sown the seeds f our success—the willingness to probe and. m it important, to never give up. When we put our particular brand of clear thinking and perseverance to work, questions find answers. Seniors who showed fine leadership were captain Rush Harrison, Rob Egly, Bob Anspaugh, Kurt Pugh, Rick Gearhart, and Bill Bower. Also making fine contributions were juniors Kurt Wiggers, Elijah Harris and sophomore Rob Polderman. Overall team effort and pride was what shined through and made this season a successful one. 1 ?8 On The Prowl Hang tough, Rush. Defense at its highest! Work as a Team. Come on Rob, quit showing off. This season's Varsity Baseball Cats are trying for a 3rd consecutive win in the K.V.A. league. With many hard practices, dedication, and a lot of team spirit the team has a good possibility. Last years expert pitching of Bob Anspaugh and Doug Charles will prove to be an asset for the team. Add this to eight returning seniors and the team has a lot to promise in the season. Good luck to the team in the K.V.A. and in the season's to come. 136 Front Row: Gail Gromak, Denise Koning, Gail Mortensen, Michelle VanderRoest. Champs The Lady Wildcats have high expectations this year, and rightfully so. The team is coming off of a K. V. A. win last year with only the loss of two seniors for this year's season. The teams biggest assets are unity and a strong team concept. They play well together. They respect, encourage, and support one another. They know that through hard work, conditioning, and dedication, that a goal can be achieved. Last summer the team stayed together for an extended playing season. Five of the Mattawan players, including the coaches, went on to win the State Little League tournament and placed third in the National Central Regional tournament. Couple that with five returning all star players and we have the makings for a new team goal. Mattawan is proud of the Lady Wildcats. 137 1985 Track Returning Lettermen Front Row: Steve Brand, Mike Hizer, Curtis Bell, Bret Furtwangler, Bob Cober, Tim Rose, Steve Sangsland, Jeff Wetters, Mike Creager, John Cober. In June of 1941, Frank Farthing began repairing and maintaining school buses at the Mattawan Schools. Forty-three years later, he is now going to be retiring. When Mr. Farthing began working for the Mattawan Schools, the school was operating nine buses. At the ripe young age of 18, after a short time of apprenticeship, he took the head job in the area of transportation in April of 1942. He drove buses as well as taking care of them until 1967. Then he had to devote full time to maintaining the vehicles. In 1973, he began to have assistance in maintaining the much larger fleet of buses. During the time he has worked for the Mattawan Schools, about 20,000,000 (yes, that's twenty million) student rides have been taken to and from school. Mr. Farthing has driven buses over a quarter million miles. We applaud and thank Mr. Farthing for his many years of service to the Mattawan Schools. We wish him well in retirement. 158 IN LOVING MEMORY CARRIE MILLER November 11, 1967 March 9, 1985 Carrie Miller’s life, although much too short, was spent in many positive ways. Her quiet and unassuming manner did not hide her contribution to our school. Band and Flag Corp were two of Carrie’s devotions while in school. She took pride in her involvement and great pride In the achievement of the band. Her involvement with her church. First Baptist of Paw Paw, was yet another example of Carrie’s personality and values. Life holds no guarantees for us, longevity Is always in doubt. Carrie’s life demonstrates that, although in years it was short. It was full of quality. Loving family and friends are testimony to this. We will feel her life touching ours, her voice speaking and her spirit looking out of others' eyes.
