We were afraid for each other We prayed for each other We lied for each other, But most of all we cried for each other As good friends do. A promise ... our friendship wouldn’t die. A promise... it wouldn't fall to become a lie. As good friends do. I seemed to dread the day Your path went a separate way, But still a promise was kept true A promise of togetherness for me and you. As good friends do. All the memories can not be lost. Too many heartaches they have cost. We'll put our memories in a case Out of the way; in some safe place. As good friends do. Someday when we pass or meet On a bright, but quiet street, I’ll open up my treasured case, And watch our memories in your face As good friends do. Just remember Don't give up. And don’t give in. For memories and promises the years will never win. I’ll always love you. As good friends do. The girls Varsity Volleyball team played with great intensity and Wildcat pride during the 82-83 season. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough for the lady spikers to suffer through a long and tough season. The lady cats played hard as a team but were less formidable than their K.V.A. opponents, due partly to the lack of experience of this year’s team. The hard work and experience for the coming years should be bright for the lady cats. 118 I got it. 119 Ready for the return. J.V. Volleyball 120 WILDCAT SLDGCEDS Matlawan Baseball has always had a tradition of having talented players capable of performing outstanding plays, and this year’s team was no exception. The Wildcats counted heavily upon the experience of their returning lettermen: seniors Todd Reits β€” shortstop and pitcher; Mike Mortensen β€” 2nd baseman; Don Hunt β€” 1st base and pitcher; Mike Rose β€” outfielder; Bob McLarty β€” outfielder; and junior Kevin Vandenberg β€” catcher and pitcher. Junior Varsity performers up for their first season of varsity ball included: Emmett Spencer β€” outfielder and pitcher; Jeff Crawford β€” 3rd baseman; Frank Hudson β€” outfielder; Dave Connell β€” outfielder and pitcher; Bob Blaylock β€” 2nd baseman; Tony Pendowski β€” catcher and 1st baseman; Mike Ringler β€” pitcher and infielder; and Sophomore Bob Anspaugh β€” pitcher and infield. With the intensity and talent displayed this season the Wildcats not only showed their pride in themselves, but also displayed to their opponents that the Blue and Gold” is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the future. i 121 Returning Varsity Softball players this year are; Amy Cashen, Debbie Hippensteel, and Michelle VanderRoest. The team lost ten seniors last year, and among the many hopefuls ready to fill those open positions were Kim Olson and Debbie Munting, who were brought up to the Varsity ranks for last year’s tournament. Although this past season was a rebuilding year for the Wildcat Varsity Softball Team it was filled with more than its fair share intense hustle and exciting plays. 122 DIAMCND C AELINt S CIJIZ BOWL Left to Right: Mr. Johnston, Amy Cashen, Scott Goodman, Keri Witman, Mark Beadles, Michelle Wright, Chris Munson. This year’s Quiz Bowl team completed another successful year as the team finished 3rd in the K.V.A. behind Kalamazoo Christian and Paw Paw. Led by Mark Beadles, the team once again showed other K.V.A. schools that we are a perennial power in this competition. In the past three years, Mattawan has finished 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Many thanks go out to Coach Mr. Johnston and to Moderator Mr. Williams. 123 ATHLETES IN ACTION 124 125 MEMBERS: MIKE ALBERT, CHRIS BARBEE, DEBBIE BEUTLER, TODD BORGENS, SUE GRABOWSKI, CHRIS HARRISON, DON HILBERT STEVE KIRKLIN, GEORGE KOBREEK, PEGGY LAMB, KATHY MELCI, CINDY MILLER, HIDE ROERADE BECKY SEXTON PAUL SIMONDS, DAVESTRAUBE, DONSTRAUBE, MIKE STROUD, AMY VANDYKE, RON WALL THERESA YOUNGBLOOD Yearbook Editor: David Straube β€’w Advisor: Mr. Throop Newspaper Editor: Todd Borgens PUBLICATIONS A more detailed student selection process this year brought about a great deal of participation and cooperation on the part of the publications class. Many more ideas and hard work keyed the success for the year and made this year’s yearbook one to remember. It would not have all been made possible, however, without the attitude and class of the best student body possible. 127 Skill Center Is fcr a Lifetime Working at the grind. Balancing the books. A All-State Band Member In a very prestigious award, Rex Marks was selected as first chair trombone of the Michigan Lions All-State Band. Rex was one out of only 160 people who were chosen to participate in this band. He will be traveling for two weeks to Hawaii and spending most of his time at the University of Hawaii. Congratulations to Rex and we all hope that your experience with this band is a memorable one. 132 BAND MARCHES CN The High School Band is constantly adding on to the motto; β€œWith Mattawan Pride.” On March 26, the band competed in District Band and Orchestra Festival; and again came out on top, with no rank lower than an A. The band also has a tentative plan for a trip to Florida in April of 1984. The band wishes to thank you for all the continuous support and consideration throughout the years. There were some new faces out at Timber Ridge this year from M.H.S. There were those who experienced their first wipeout and those who just took one of their many falls. Again the club went to Crystal Mountain for a beautiful weekend. A few people from M.H.S. went to Kill-ington, Vermont to get in some real skiing this winter. The Ski Club would like to thank Mrs. Staron, Mrs. Deboer, Mr. Haas, and Mr. Stearns for being great advisors. 145 SPIRIT WEEK: HA WAIIAN DA Y s T fe-year's snowcorfiing frep assembTy'-was titie best evefrThe spirit was a representation of Mat-tawan’s pride for their school. The various events that took place at the assembly were a shaving cream skit, won by the sophomores; coke skit, 1 balloon popping skit, a tennis shoe skit all won by the juniors, and the all famous blue and gold competition which was won by the freshmen. The snowcoming pep assembly once again had a very exciting format and a successful turn out. 147 8N an r J3 saaawaw ROYAL COURT This year’s Snowcoming was a performance of the best efforts of the students at Mattawan High School. Chosen by their classmates are the members of the court. They were as follows: Seniors β€” Mary Stevens and Joe Alexander; Virgie Young and Emerson Bloomfield; Thurmon McQuien and Kathy Melchi; and Angie Cook and Todd Reits; Juniors β€” Theresa Youngblood and Chris Munson; Sophomores β€” Lisa Wolf and Bill Keene; and Freshmen Barb Duffield and Dion Morgan. The King and Queen for Snowcoming β€œ83” were Kathy Melchi and Todd Reits. Each year Snowcoming seems to get better and better. 149 IN MEMCPIAM 1965 1979 Timothy Paul Gordon When the class of 1983 graduates in June, we will be graduating without one of our fellow classmates, Tim Gordon. Tims untimely death took him away from us during his first Christmas vacation in the high school. When we came back to school in the new year many fell a loss deep inside, we had started another new year while Tim’s had ended. The sorrowness was not only felt by the student body but by his teachers as well. Many remember Tim as a good friend who cared for other classmates as well as his teachers, and most of all a person you could depend on. Tim will always be in our minds and his loss will never be replaced. 150 On February 16th, 1983 many students at Mattawan High School lost a very good friend. Michelle Bowman was a guiding force within the class of '83. She was nominated most likely to succeed and elected Vice President of her senior class. Additionally Michelle was secretary of the National Honor Society. Her time was not only devoted to her classmates but also to her church where she served leadership capacities for the Arch Diocese Youth Group. Michelle was planning on pursuing a career in architecture after attending either the University of Detroit or Notre Dame. Without a doubt Michelle lived her life in an exemplary way. Her enthusiasm, sincere caring for fellow humans, academic pursuit and good nature were outstanding examples for all of us to follow. Many people enter and leave our lives; only a very few change who we are or what we are about. Michelle was one of the few. We will remember her always. 151
