SR. CLASS OFFICERS — President: Dirk Weeldreyer, Vice-President: Brenda Riggs, Secretary: Debbie Snow, Treasurer: Julie Woodard, Trustee: Jennifer Chados. SR. CLASS ADVISORS — Mrs. Neal and Ms. Larsen. THE CLASS OF 1982 — CARRYING ON THE TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE WITH MATTAWAN PRIDE. The class of’82 is a body of well-rounded students who were involved in all aspects of school-life. We had leaders in sports, scholarship, and liberal arts. Our class is composed of a variety of strong-willed individuals; but all in all, we had the same ideals and goals. This helped to produce a great feeling of unity and class spirit. We hope to be remembered as the most spirited class ever produced from Mattawan High School. As we look onward to our bright future, we shall always remember the great times had at MHS; the laughter, the tears, the heartbreak and the fears of becoming an adult. So, as the Class of ’82 graduates, we want to stop and thank the teachers, parents and friends who have made our years at MHS “The Best of Times.” 16

As the school year 1981-82 draws to a close; and we the Seniors prepare to say our “farewells” to the school that has played an outstanding role in each of our lives, let’s reflect upon some of our experiences while “growing-up.” Kindergarten was our first experience of being away from home. After a long day, we had Graham Crackers and milk. We had our first field trip. We went to Plank Road Farm. 1st Grade — We were writing words and had our first Gym class with Mr. Kesteloot and Music with Mrs. LeRoy. Our field trip included a trip to John Ball Park Zoo in Grand Rapids. 2nd Grade — This year we went to the Ringling Brothers-Barnum Bailey Circus in Kalamazoo for our field trip. Many of us had our first round with “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.” 3rd Grade — We were in the new wing of the Elementary building. We were able to go to the new library, Mrs. Murray (the Librarian) would read to us. We were more interested in scuffing our feet on the carpet and giving everybody a “shock.” For a field trip, some of us went to Cook Nuclear Center: the rest of us had picnics and cook-outs. 4th Grade — This year we had a musical, and we performed it for our parents. We went on a tour of the Ekrich Plant and then had a picnic at Milham Park, for our field trip. 5th Grade — This year, we met many great teachers: Mr. Roach — he was known for his crazy jokes, and Mr. Khaled from Lebannon. He taught us a great deal about the customs of the Middle East. For our field trip, we went to Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit. This was the end of our Elementary career. 6th Grade — Now we were in the Middle School. At the end of the year we went to Sixth Grade Camp at Pretty Lake. 7th Grade — We had a great deal of interesting classes: Mr. Cloney for Geography, and Mr. Binder for Science, and who can forget English with Mr. Snow? Remember he used to be covered with chalk dust? 8th Grade — We were the out-going class from the middle school. We had Mr. Brown for Math. He loved the Muppets; he was so proud of his little girl Kimberly. Who can forget Mr. Mac Phee’s Science Class? Remember all those science projects that failed and made the whole school smell, and the rubberband fights, and how Mr. Mac Phee blushed when we had to go through the chapter on Reproduction? So, we made it through Middle School — now we were ready for “Big Time” — High School. 9th Grade — We were “lowly” Freshmen, but we showed them all we had spirit and determination. We had Mr. Haas for English; “a laugh a minute.” Of course, who can forget Mr. Clark’s Health Class? Especially the one in which Mr. Clark dropped Charlie the Skeleton’s head and it bounced across the floor? Remember Sex-Ed, and Mr. Clark’s famous impression with the baseballs? 10th Grade — This was a year of transition. We had World History — remember all those map tests Ms. Krueger gave? Of course, how can we ever forget Mrs. Kennedy? Admit it, we are greater “scholars” thanks to her. Don’t forget Mr. “How-Now-Brown-Cow” Goodwyn, and all the fun in his Speech Class. The hostages were also taken captive in Iran. 11th Grade — We were Juniors. We had one required class this year — Junior English with Mr. Williams. How familiar “Today is ... A.D., the one and only, there will never be another ...” sounded. Remember the “Amazing Fact for the Day”? Historically, the hostages were released after 444 days in Iran; and the first Space Shuttle was launched. 12th Grade — We made it — we were finally Seniors. The only thing we had to be concerned with were two “minor” details. They were Government and Family Life. Mrs. Loedeman and Ms. Larsen weren’t as “mean” and “cruel” as we had imagined them to be. We decided to spend our Sr. Trip at the World’s Fair near Knoxville, Tennessee. We sold popcorn, cookies, donuts, candy, to raise money for our trip. We had Sr. pictures made, ordered announcements, memory books, and Senior Keys. The years have gone by so fast; time waits for no-one. The class of’82 has made a name for itself. We will not be forgotten; we will be remembered as the class that worked together as a big “family.” We shared many good and not-so-good times; yet, we made it. Surely, we had The Best of Times. CONGRATULATIONS AND MUCH LUCK AND SUCCESS CLASS OF ’82 Brenda Riggs 17
