1 This year’s 1981-82 Yearbook is being dedicated to Mr. Wayne Townsend. Although only completing his first full year at Mat-tawan, Mr. Townsend has proven to be a tremendous asset to our school. His guidance and encouragement to students has made him a very welcomed addition. Filling Mr. Cretsinger’s shoes is by no means an easy task. However, Mr. Townsend has instead made himself an individual, which in his own way, has left a warm thought in every graduating senior’s heart and mind. Thanks a lot Mr. Townsend, and we hope you are here for many years to come. THE CLASS OF 1982 — CARRYING ON THE TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE WITH MATTAWAN PRIDE. The class of’82 is a body of well-rounded students who were involved in all aspects of school-life. We had leaders in sports, scholarship, and liberal arts. Our class is composed of a variety of strong-willed individuals; but all in all, we had the same ideals and goals. This helped to produce a great feeling of unity and class spirit. We hope to be remembered as the most spirited class ever produced from Mattawan High School. As we look onward to our bright future, we shall always remember the great times had at MHS; the laughter, the tears, the heartbreak and the fears of becoming an adult. So, as the Class of ’82 graduates, we want to stop and thank the teachers, parents and friends who have made our years at MHS “The Best of Times.” 16 As the school year 1981-82 draws to a close; and we the Seniors prepare to say our “farewells” to the school that has played an outstanding role in each of our lives, let’s reflect upon some of our experiences while “growing-up.” Kindergarten was our first experience of being away from home. After a long day, we had Graham Crackers and milk. We had our first field trip. We went to Plank Road Farm. 1st Grade — We were writing words and had our first Gym class with Mr. Kesteloot and Music with Mrs. LeRoy. Our field trip included a trip to John Ball Park Zoo in Grand Rapids. 2nd Grade — This year we went to the Ringling Brothers-Barnum Bailey Circus in Kalamazoo for our field trip. Many of us had our first round with “99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.” 3rd Grade — We were in the new wing of the Elementary building. We were able to go to the new library, Mrs. Murray (the Librarian) would read to us. We were more interested in scuffing our feet on the carpet and giving everybody a “shock.” For a field trip, some of us went to Cook Nuclear Center: the rest of us had picnics and cook-outs. 4th Grade — This year we had a musical, and we performed it for our parents. We went on a tour of the Ekrich Plant and then had a picnic at Milham Park, for our field trip. 5th Grade — This year, we met many great teachers: Mr. Roach — he was known for his crazy jokes, and Mr. Khaled from Lebannon. He taught us a great deal about the customs of the Middle East. For our field trip, we went to Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum in Detroit. This was the end of our Elementary career. 6th Grade — Now we were in the Middle School. At the end of the year we went to Sixth Grade Camp at Pretty Lake. 7th Grade — We had a great deal of interesting classes: Mr. Cloney for Geography, and Mr. Binder for Science, and who can forget English with Mr. Snow? Remember he used to be covered with chalk dust? 8th Grade — We were the out-going class from the middle school. We had Mr. Brown for Math. He loved the Muppets; he was so proud of his little girl Kimberly. Who can forget Mr. Mac Phee’s Science Class? Remember all those science projects that failed and made the whole school smell, and the rubberband fights, and how Mr. Mac Phee blushed when we had to go through the chapter on Reproduction? So, we made it through Middle School — now we were ready for “Big Time” — High School. 9th Grade — We were “lowly” Freshmen, but we showed them all we had spirit and determination. We had Mr. Haas for English; “a laugh a minute.” Of course, who can forget Mr. Clark’s Health Class? Especially the one in which Mr. Clark dropped Charlie the Skeleton’s head and it bounced across the floor? Remember Sex-Ed, and Mr. Clark’s famous impression with the baseballs? 10th Grade — This was a year of transition. We had World History — remember all those map tests Ms. Krueger gave? Of course, how can we ever forget Mrs. Kennedy? Admit it, we are greater “scholars” thanks to her. Don’t forget Mr. “How-Now-Brown-Cow” Goodwyn, and all the fun in his Speech Class. The hostages were also taken captive in Iran. 11th Grade — We were Juniors. We had one required class this year — Junior English with Mr. Williams. How familiar “Today is ... A.D., the one and only, there will never be another ...” sounded. Remember the “Amazing Fact for the Day”? Historically, the hostages were released after 444 days in Iran; and the first Space Shuttle was launched. 12th Grade — We made it — we were finally Seniors. The only thing we had to be concerned with were two “minor” details. They were Government and Family Life. Mrs. Loedeman and Ms. Larsen weren’t as “mean” and “cruel” as we had imagined them to be. We decided to spend our Sr. Trip at the World’s Fair near Knoxville, Tennessee. We sold popcorn, cookies, donuts, candy, to raise money for our trip. We had Sr. pictures made, ordered announcements, memory books, and Senior Keys. The years have gone by so fast; time waits for no-one. The class of’82 has made a name for itself. We will not be forgotten; we will be remembered as the class that worked together as a big “family.” We shared many good and not-so-good times; yet, we made it. Surely, we had The Best of Times. CONGRATULATIONS AND MUCH LUCK AND SUCCESS CLASS OF ’82 Brenda Riggs 17 Class Malta: Basting is nat ta be mailed far; it is ta be acluened. Class Calars: Ragal Blue and Pale Jellam Class flamer: Mlute Rase Moving On This is it. . . I’m on my way Today is gone Tomorrows a new day. I can’t stay here to wait, For my ship to come in, I know it’s coming I’m not sure when. I’m running to meet it My arms open wide, This is life; It’s worth living. I’m not going to hide So wish me good luck. Please try to see I don’t love life less, I just have to be free. For class officers we elected Don Straube for President, Chris Bower Vice-President, Lisa Crawford Secretary, Kurt Brown Treasurer, and Peggy Lamb Trustee. Our magazine sale did not go as planned. We fell short of our goal by a great deal. We raised a large proportion of money on our concession stand during the basketball season. We had great expectations for our float; however, we fell short of our goal once again — coming in fourth place. We are looking forward to a change in the future. 51 Class of 83' Deane Adams Rodney Agustelli Joe Alexander Lowell Ambs Sue Anderson Carmen Ayala Colleen Barrett David Beeke Cindy Bloom Emerson Bloomfield Todd Borgens Jocie Bowen Chris Bower Michelle Bowman Eleanor Boyer Gary Brodhagen David Brooks Kurt Brown Stephanie Bryer Bob Blysema 52 Mary Jane Canney Amy Cashen Kevin Charles Victor Chopp Eric Christensen April Collins Angela Cook Mary Copenhaver Tom Cox Lisa Crawford Betsy Culbertson Jenny DeWaal Kristi Domrase Dave Doorlag Chris Dopheide Melinda Drummond Steve Dude Frank English Stephanie Foster Laura Gallup The three stooges Tom Landry Jr. 53 Jim Haynes Brigitte Hiestand Don Hilbert Deb Hippensteel Tony Hoehn Don Hunt Paula Johnson Merle Jones Karl Kazeks Kip Kerby Terry King Marcie Kirk George Kobreek Chris Kovach Bart Kovacic 54 Peggy Lamb Mark Lane Ann Lanning Dave LeRoy Jim Letto Jerry Lingg John Manning Jackie Mannon Kelli McKenzie Robert McLarty Zina McLemore Thurmon McQuien Kathy Melchi Tony Meulman Jim Montgomery Sandy Morrow Steve Morrow Mike Mortensen Vicki Nard Lynne Nessel 55 Jeff Oakley Beth Oberlin Darcy Omel LouAnn O’Neill Steve Osborne Ted Otten Lisa Papier Don Pate David Peters Mike Pineau Elise Polderman Kim Ray Todd Riets Theresa Rix Denise Roberts Rick Roberts Mike Rose Chris Rothi Renee Sackett Kevin Schafer 56 Tim Schafer Pam Schuen Kevin Schult Becky Sexton Mike Shank Marie Sherman Cindy Siebel Anne Sly Tammy Smead David Sparks Sheila Spencer Mary Stevens David Straube Don Straube Vicki Strong Phil Thompson Thomas Vaughn Ellen Vera Eric Vito Annette Watson 57 Robert Wearmouth Tammy Weston David Wetters James Williams Kris Williams Lisa Wolff Doug Wolthuis Michelle Wright Virginia Young Chris Stuut Not Pictured: I'odd Cleveland Terry Miller Tanveer Qureshi Harold Whitehead Carol Williams i 58 President: Tommie VanNiman Vice president: Paula Hofman Secretary: Cindy Jeanette Treasurer: Greg Marvin Trustee: Dave Sullivan Advisor: Mr. Staron This school year is going by fast and the Sophomores are coming through successfully. We are gals interested in basketball. What do they do? We go to Women’s College Basketball games, scrimmage, go to other events, earn money for Varsity jackets and or basketball camp, and other things that may come up. What do they do to earn money? We sell various money raising things including stick up memo boards, cards, candies, and other gift giving items. Why go to basketball camp? Well the number one reason is because it’s fun! And of course it improves your skills at basketball. There is also the added opportunity of meeting new people, doing many activities, and being away from home for a little while. 105 Angela Kiser and John Hecker ii April Moon and Juan Maestre 106 JUNIORS: Stephanie Foster and David Peters SOPHOMORES: Kyle Sikkenga and Dave Sullivan FRESHMEN: Kalee Polderman and Rush Harrison 107 Ski Bums Take a Powder Ski Club members in alphabetical order are: Mike Albert, David Anderson, Kathy Anderson, Sue Anderson, Mike Avard, Shelli Boelman, Judy Bramble, Stephanie Bryer, Margie Byers, Deena Chamberlain, Linda Day, Rick DeBoer, Darla DeVries, Steve Dude, Angie Bumke, Scott Foote, Julie Foster, Anne Glidden, Terri Heacock, Richard Hess, Barb Howse, Missy Howse, Jackie Hurst, George Kobreek, Juan Maestre, Carol MacPhee, Jamie Marconie, Sean Mardis, John Marroguin, Nate McMann, Annette Myer, Debbie Munting, Tammy Munting, Bev Nederhoed, Andy Nicks, Paul Oberlin, Kim Olson, Karl Omelay, Robin Patterson, Elise Polderman, Kalee Polderman, Cindy Puzevic, Larry Reynolds, Dave Rodebaugh, Renee Sackett, Rex Sackett, Eric Southwell, Dave Straube, Don Straube, Shelia Vito, Kelly Welch, Kris Williams, Mike Wooden.
