Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than youself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let not this blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be synical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nature strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusions of life keep peace with your soul. With all its shame, drudgery and broken dreams. It is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. 5 6 9 13 17 Teri Guilford President Karen Rielly Vice President Sponsors M rs. Neal Mrs. Ray Bob Chopp Trustee Senior Class History Here we were, September of ’78 and the new youngsters of Mattawan High! We had our first class elections and officers were Pat Bower, President, John Dominquez, Vice President, Melinda Kitzmiller, Secretary; Debbie Shaffer, Treasurer; and Wendy Kooyers, Trustee. Our Sponsor for this year was Mrs. DeBoer. During this year our Homecoming float along with King Kong took second place. Doing well on our float we also did a good job of keeping ahead financially mainly by holding dances. Soon August rolled around again and we earned the title name of sophomore. This year’s class council included Pat Bower, President, John Dominquez, Vice President; Melinda Kitzmiller, Secretary; Selina Dominquez, Treasurer; and Linda Boven, trustee. Our sponsor for this year became Mr. Vrogop. Second place was again awarded to our Homecoming float with the title “we’ll be strong to the finish.” We still were keeping ahead financially again with dances. Our Junior year was a trying time. We had two new sponsors for this year, Mrs. Neal and Mrs. Ray who helped our class council; Pat Bower, President, Karen Rielly, Vice President; Kim Van-Dyke, Secretary; Selina Dominquez, Treasurer, and Shelly Heacock, Trustee, along with the rest of the class to organize our many activities and responsibilities for the year. Things such as another second place Homecoming float, a magazine sale, and the all important Junior Senior Prom. Here we were at last! All the way from tiny quiet freshmen to tall and rowdy seniors. Mrs. Neal and Mrs. Ray were once again class advisors. The final class elections included Teri Guilford, President; Karen Rielly, Vice President; Kim VanDyke, Secretary; Selina Dominquez, Treasurer, and Trustee, Bob Chopp. This year faced with the usual hectic schedule of many senior obligations: caps and gowns, graduation announcements and fund raisers for the senior trip. Also included in this were senior pictures, and the organization of the graduation ceremony. Through all this trauma and tribulation — WE MADE IT! 19 Class Co lors: GoflBL. and Cjold Class Slower: yellow Roe or we Class Wlotto: WJe are not afraid ofi tomorrow have Seen yesterc ay and we love todau. ay eflectiond fetter on hotef stationary eft oi er from some fong forgotten trip; casuaffy bring greetings an cl te fs me you re fine, job is greaty Scboo is goody an c it S Snowing a ready. The earth is shrinking. Today what happens in one part of the world sends ripples to all corners of the globe. In a very real sense, we all have become neighbors in a global village. No nation, no corporation, and no individual can stand alone. As your neighbor, The Upjohn Company is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all. Through research. Quality products. Community service. And respect for the environment. We strive to be a good neighbor in today's global village. Upjohn 149 This year’s 1981 Yearbook is being dedicated to Mr. Johnston. His efforts and guidance has brought an enormous improvement in the quality of Mattawan High School. So many times we seem to think of him as our principal and leader. However, he is more than that to a great number of students, faculty, and community people. He is a friend! One who cares about more than a “B” in Science or a “C” in Math. He is concerned about improving the person themselves. And that is what MATTAWAN PRIDE is all about. Thanks Mr. Johnston, you are a tremendous asset to this school. 150
