They brighten and enrich our days with their smiles and laughter. They are always there, bright and cheery. Each one is constantly making new efforts to help each student in every way possible. They show us what we are and where we can be. They help us to achieve even the highest ambition. They share with us their knowledge of more than just the academic world. They bring us new ideas and new ways of thinking. They help us to express ourselves freely. The best thing that they share with us is their patience and understanding. They have time for each individual and their hopes, dreams, and troubles. So, with great appreciation and many thanks, we dedicate the IMPRESSIONS ’80” to two great people; MR. WILLIAMS and MR. CRETSINGER. 3 Being in High School at Mattawan is an Impression that will last a lifetime . .. .. Remember when ... you were a Senior sex symbol? you just couldn’t figure out how to run that sewing machine? ... you spent hours typing the newspaper? Being a Senior meant... — filling in your class schedule with Home Ec and Art classes. — breaking out in hives over your ACT scores. — sending out graduation announcements to relatives you have never met (and hoping for presents). — being able to act crazy, without having anyone say anything about it. — being the class with the most spirit! — wearing a graduation gown that dragged on the ground because the class secretary put you down as being 6 feet 2. — standing on the threshold of adulthood, and not being at all sure you want to be there . . . 5 Being a Junior meant. .. — finally having the Seniors talk to you! — at last being upper classmen. — spending hours working on the Junior-Senior prom. — falling in love for what seemed like the fiftieth time. — playing Varsity Basketball, and having to sit the bench. — having to forfeit a Friday night to work in the concession stand. — anticipation of the ultimate — being a Senior! 6 Being a Sophomore meant... — paying a library fine that had been due since you were a freshman. — going out with that special Senior guy you've always had your eyes on. — finally having the nerve to take that big ski slope at Timber Ridge. — being given a little respect by the Juniors and Seniors. — being a Pep Pal for the best looking football player on the team. — wondering what it would be like to finally be a Junior 7 Being a Freshman meant. .. 8 ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF ADMINISTRATION Mr. James Weeldreyer Superintendent of Schools B.A., M.A. Macalester College, Western Michigan University Mr. William Johnston Principal B.S.M.A. Western Michigan University Mr. Richard Ames Assistant Principal B.S., M.A. Western Michigan 10 Faculty Autographs 11 Mrs. Cheryl Anderson Business, B.S., Western Michigan University Mr. Clark Balas Math and Science, B.S., Western Michigan University Mrs. Barbara Baltmanis Choir. President — Anne Dragicevich Vice-President — Gary Nitz Secretary — Linda Hanson Treasurer — Kelly Bowman Trustee — Debbie Farris SENIORS It was September of the Bicentennial year when we first hesitantly walked through the doors of Mattawan High School. We elected our first class officers who were John Kucinich — President, Sharri MacCartney — Secretary, Sherrie Hunt — Treasurer, and Mike Ryan — Trustee. Our sponsors, Miss Tenney and Mrs. Norton helped us through some of our “tragic” experiences such as our Homecoming float which was a rather unique Cinderella carriage (a football). We titled this creation “Carry Us to Victory.” Instead, it carried us to 4th place and left us about $40 in debt. Even so, we somehow managed to leave carrying high hopes for the next year. The summer went quickly, and we were soon considered Sophomores. We were no longer the shortest students found wandering aimlessly through the halls. Yet although we were continuously growing, our wisdom somehow seemed to be temporarily “stunted.” The profits from the dance we sponsored were found mysteriously lost, which proved to be quite unfortunate for our class treasury. Our Homecoming Float was titled “A Star is Born” (or hatched!?). Its funeral took place shortly after it awarded us with another 4th 18 place. Our class officers this year were John Kucinich — President, Connie Wegeler — Vice President, Sherrie Hunt — Secretary, Curtis Ferrell — Treasurer, Mike Ryan — Trustee, and our advisor was Mrs. Kennedy. Although our accomplishments seemed to be few and far between, we did somehow manage to get ourselves out of debt by the end of the year. Things were beginning to look up. Our Junior year seemed to be a great turning point for all of us. Our budget took its first major leap after our magazine sale, and it steadily rose due to our concession stand. We were backed up by many advisors to help us through our difficult times, namely Miss Evans, Mrs. Kennedy, Mr. Coady, and Mr. Creegan. Our class officers were: Curtis Ferrell — President, John Kucinich — Vice President, Sherrie Hunt — Secretary, Rich Nederhoed — Treasurer, and Mike Ryan — Trustee. Our Snoopy float titled ‘‘Tear ’Em Up Cats” brought us 3rd place which, for us, was one step upward. Our budget managed to stay in remarkably good shape even after our last project, the Prom. Our theme was ‘‘Come Sail Away” and it was hopefully an occasion that the 79 graduates will never forget. At last we finally became the long awaited Seniors. We finally accomplished the task of building a Homecoming float by actually winning the float competitions with our theme “Gun Em Down” (a surprisingly happy ending to our float history). Our next goal was to raise enough money through three fund raisers for our overnight trip to Toronto. We elected as our class officers: Anne Drag-icevich — President, Gary Nitz — Vice President, Linda Hanson — Secretary, Kelly Bowman — Treasurer, and Debbie Farris — Trustee. Our sincere gratitude goes to our sponsors Mr. Cretsinger and Mr. Williams whose guidance and advice we could not have survived without. As we approach the final stages of our “membership” at Mattawan High School, we turn back with many memories and extreme gratitude to all who have helped to make our journey so fulfilling. We shall soon, once again, hesitantly walk through the main doors at M.H.S., but this time each of us will take the separate paths to our future. Molly M. Adams NICKNAME — Mol . It’s only for a while, And even in my darkest hour, the times we’ve had can always make me smile .. . Can you feel it? Something deep inside that won’t let go? And leaving now is oh so hard I know, 'Cause the times we had were special and the dreams we had come true? But you know we’d spend them over again To see how much we grew — Once we saw a rainbow Shining in the sky like it could sing. We thought it was more beautiful than anything, We wanted it for our very own But we knew we could not have it, But we knew that it would be back someday To take us away — You know we don't want to leave now, But we all have to live life as it goes on, And the time that we’re apart will seem so ever long But we will meet again someday Don’t you know we will? And even though some time is passed Our love will always last Goodbye doesn't mean forever. . . Our major tund raiser, the magazine drive, was very successful. We not only reached our goal, but went over it. Other money raising projects included were the winter basketball concession stand, T-shirt sales, basketball raffles, and dances. The Junior Class was also involved in other projects. One of these was the Junior float, which was put together at Mr. Heacock’s , Wolverine coach. This year’s float took second place, and was shown and judged on Homecoming game night along with the others. Finally, our major and biggest project of the year was organizing the Junior-Senior Prom. This meant having to set up the KVCC ballroom, finding a band, buying prom favors, and selling tickets. A special thanks should be given to our sponsors, Mrs. Neal, Mrs. Ray, and Mr. Throop, for their time and effort in helping make this a successful year. Jerry Kovacic What other activity lets you get up at 4:30 Saturday morning, ride a bus for three to four hours, and then compete for eight to ten more hours? It’s Forensics, Mattawan’s fastest growing new organization. The 1980 MHS Forensics Team expects big results this year. With sixteen returning members, MHS will strengthen its place as one of the forensic power teams of Southwestern Michigan. As a first year team, MHS took on such strong teams as Kalamazoo Central, Portage Northern, and Battle Creek Central to win sixteen top six places, have a state finalist in Serious Interpretative Reading, and have two representatives to the state Student Congress. This year, with a stunning variety of material, and a lot of fresh new faces, the team has no direction to go in but up. Look to “Rock Church” and “Islands” to win big in the Muliple Reading division, and “Which Mother Is Mine?” should represent MHS well in Dramatic Duo. With only two Seniors this year the MHS Forensics team should be a winner for years to come. 85 Many things happened during Homecoming 1979. To start off the week five days were designated as dress-up days. Monday we had some wacky T-shirts, Tuesday some new and different occupations were discovered, and a wide variety of clowns showed up on Wednesday. Thursday brought students from many decades and Friday boosted the spirit with Blue and Gold, and Slave day. Next in line was Homecoming court. Students had a tough time deciding. They had to go through two rounds of voting. The floats proved to be very interesting. The decades theme was carried through on each float. The Seniors, who were first place winners, entitled their float Gun em Down. The Juniors came up with a float entitled Fire Up and Aim For a Wildcat Victory, which tied for second with the SS Peanut, created by the Freshmen. In last place were the Sophomores with their float entitled Computerize the Panthers. Our team played a tough game against the Delton Panthers but suffered a loss of 20 to 21. We would like to thank all of the staff who helped make Homecoming 1979 one of the best in Mattawan’s history. They also finished 4th in the Mattawan Invitational, 5th in the regionals and 13th in the Niles Brandywine Invitational. With only two members graduating, the outlook seems good with continued practice and performance as the team strives for the KVA championship. 103 SPRING OUTLOOK Track The 1979 Wildcat Track team made history by winning its first K.V.A Men’s Track Championship in 34 years of competition The team was undefeated in dual meets. The team will be trying to retain the title that they won last spring. Softball This year’s softball team is building for the future. All but five members of last year's team either graduated or moved away. Softball players from last year will be faced with the challenge of building a new team with many juniors, sophomores and possibly some freshmen. The lack of experience for these new players will cause confusion and frustrafion at the beginning of the year, but with hard work and much practice, as the season goes on, the team will hopefully improve in ability and begin to pave the way for future success in softball at Mattawan. Baseball Last year's Varsity Baseball team finished the season with a record of 15-6, the most wins in the school's history, and a 9-5 record in the K.V.A. for a third place finish. The team won a District Championship, which is the first in the school’s baseball history. Returning from last year's team are: infielders Ken Forden, John Kucinich, Joe Bower, Randy Bloomfield, Mark Thompson, and Mike Frommann. Also returning are outfielder Bob Randall and pitcher Mark Bramble. This should be a good nucleus to build around. The Wildcats should be in the race for the league championship, and possibly another District Championship. 104 AUTOGRAPHS 105 Women Wildcats!
