The first few months were full of tough adjustments and many times we wanted to scurry back to the building next door, but we chugged along through our 4th place '■earthy HomeComing float, (which has been the joke of our class since) and the dances and sports events. We even had our own T.V. raffle! By the end of the year we were well into the swing of school events. Our freshmen officers were Pres.-K. Kearcher. V. Pres.-J. Lowe. Sec.-B. Sherman, and Treas.-T.J. Neubauer. As our sophomore year rang in. we knew the school and could then laugh at the new freshmen. Our HomeComing Float was a Flintstone car and a great success as it took first prize along with our class winning spirit week. We again sponsored dances and had a pot-luck dinner and movie night that was much fun and even quite successful We had had more enthusiam and participation from class members and we continued to grow closer to one another each day. Our officers were Pres.-J. Lowe, V. Pres.-B. Sherman. Sec.-J. Pendowski, and Treas.-T.J. Neubauer. Then it hit! We were Juniors, upperclassmen. And what an exciting year we had. It all began with breaking the school record for magazine sales and winning spirit week for the second consecutive year of HomeComing with help from our first place float- The Declaration of Victory. Our toughest but most rewarding project was the Junior Senior Prom which we proudly presented to the departing class of 76 . The theme for our Prom was Stairway to Heaven. The officers were Pres.-J. Pendowski, V. Pres.-B. Sherman. Sec.-J. Pendowski. and Treas.-T.J. Neubauer. Our Senior year at MHS began September 8. 1976. We slipped into action during HomeComing week, finding ourselves in corn fields, chicken coops, and activity-filled barns. We once again led the school in spirit during the week with our undying enthusiam. However, our float. Blow 'Em Over , didn’t quite hit the top. but was close behind with a 2. Then, our candy sales rolled into action and continued for months afterwards. Our Senior Class officers were Pres.-J. Lowe. V. Pres.-M. Hartwigsen. Sec.-T.J. Neubauer, Treas.-C. DeVries, and Trustee-R. Bercik. As we approach the door leading away from Mattawan to other places in life, we turn back with great memories and extreme gratitude to all who have made our journey so fulfilling, wave our last good-bye. and once again hesitantly step through the door to everywhere. Sue Yonkers was elected Vice President; Leslie Dearth. Secretary: Cathy Revore, Treasurer; and Sue Johnson and Jim Neubauer, Trustees. A new position created this year was a School Board Representative which was held by Gail Eberly. Our class displayed alot of effort in the magazine drive which broke the previous record by selling over $4000.00 worth of subscriptions. We really teamed together in producing the winning float in this years HomeComing competition. A special thanks goes to Jerry Cox for help in creating the winning design. The class of “78” was in charge of consessions for Football and Basketball home games. Combined we raised approximately $1000.00. The Juniors sponsored the Junior Senior prom which was held at Western Michigan University in the Grand Ballroom. We would like to give our sincere thanks and love to John Boyce, Dave Williams and Bob Cretsinger for being our sponsors. You did a fantastic job in bringing us together and guiding us throughout the year. 32 Mark Abernathy Diane Alien Jeff Altom Sue Austin Dave Bailey Dean Beaver Larry Berger Terry Berger Mary Best Glen Bierens Lorrie Bowen Greg Bowman John Boyer Phil Boyer Jan Brant Scott Bryer Don Cavner Carol Christian Jim Clark Marjorie Cowley Jerry Cox Emily Dailey Don Dean Leslie Dearth Daryl DeVries Steve Dragicevich Gail Eberly Michelle Ellis Sue Ellis Tracy French Cammy Fullmer Julie Gates Mike Geren David Goette Dawn Goette Walt Grabowski Michelle Greer Mary Gunnell Nell Hageman Laura Hanson Lauren Hartwigsen Delilah Haynes George Hayward Perry Henschke Dagmar Heib Kim Hillsburg Sue Hudson Bill Hughey Julie James Mike Jepkema Sue Johnson Karl Kearcher Damien Kovacic Klaus Kuhanen Gary Lasecki Jeff Ledbetter Ken McConnell Connie McConnell Dan Mack Rachel Martin Barb Matlock Linda Meisling Bruce Mohney Brian Moyle Nancy Moyle Kim Neale Jim Neubaurer Terri Newhouse Linda Osborne Chris Paquin Chris Patten Bill Peterson Sally Phetteplace Rich Quinn Jim Reva Cathy Revore Dale Reynolds Jeff Richmond Debbie Ritchie John Ritsema Tom Roberts Victor Rodreguez Joni Rose Terry Ross Cindy Sackett Judy Sackett Brenda Saidla Matt Sanderson Pauline Saunders John Smits Liz Stafford Melody Steele Dave Swanson Dawn Thompson Kyle Vandenburg Tammy Wallace Mark Watson Mike Weddington Steve Welch Georgia Weston Gail Whipple Charlene Whitmore Amy Wilcox Chuck Williams Victor Wolff Julie Wood Pete Worline Sue Wonkers Not Pictured: Jeff Clarke Elgin Johnson Sam Kovacic Linda Palmatier Janet Perry Brian Simmons Tammy Williams Terry Wolthuis Robin Young In Memory: Bob Dougherty - 37 The Sophomore Class would like to thank the Dopheide family for their services and for putting up with many, many, sophomores during the preparations for HomeComing. Battling against the toughest schedule in Mattawan’s Football history the Cats” were in every game. The teams who managed to beat the Wildcats were Delton, Galesburg, and Marcellus. Their combined regular season records was 26 wins-1 loss. G.A. and Marcellus (both 9-0) eventually went to the State Football Playoffs. Losses to G.A. and Marcellus were especially hard to take as both teams came from behind to overtake and finally defeat our team with 7 minutes left in the games. All K.V.A. honors were given to Quarterback: Steve DeDoes. and Full Back: Frank Mundo. Mattawan has not had a Back receive such honors since 1960. Defensive end: Tom Kozminske was an all league selection along with Kurt Keacher who received his 2nd year in a row. All League honors this year at Linebacker: Mike Hartwigsen was on the K.V.A. Select team as well as being given All-State honerable mention by the Detroit Free-Press. The year was a great one with the future looking especially bright. While the Varsity team was winning 6 and losing 3 the other teams were all undefeated. This resulted in a 29-3 combined “76” record. FOOTBALL This years J.V. football team did something that J.V. teams in the past have not been able to do-win every game they played. We as a team feel very fortunate to be able to say that, “We’re K.V.A. Champs with an undefeated season of 9 - 0.” This year’s 1976 young Wildcats were made up of good size and ability, possessing good football sense along with a fine coachable attidude of We” a team. I would publicly like to thank each team member, as well as, my Assistant Coach, Doug McKinney, and the remaining football staff for their fine efforts in contributing to a season that will be very hard to forget. 76 Coach Hamilton FRESHMEN FOOTBALL TEAM iattavah ' tattaMji K TTAtM Front: Mr. Korb (coach). Out scoring their opponents 214 -12 the yearling wildcats rolled to a 8 win-0 loss record. It was a total team effort with all players seeing lots of action. The offense average 27 pts. a game while the defense allowed only 2 touchdowns all year, both in the air. A tough defensive effort did not allow a single score on the ground. Because of a lack of experience and height, the girls did get bumped around in the tough K.V.A. At one point in the season they had a 7 win and 3 loss record but the latter part of the season proved a disappointment as the final record was 9 wins and 11 losses. Top scorer of the year was Cindy Sackett with 161 points. Forward Kathy Kozminske grabbed 227 rebounds to lead the team.
