We attended dances and any sports activities we could get into. We were strangers to the upperclassmen, brats to the teachers, and friends to anyone in the freshman class. Sophomore year we bacame more familiar with upperclassmen around us. We felt more at ease as we went to the many functions of the school like dances, plays, concerts, and sports activities. We were looking forward to our Junior year where we would be breaking the magazine sale and planning the Junior-Senior Prom. Our Junior year finally arrived. The Junior-Senior Prom was a great success, thanks to Mrs. Pfister and members of the class. The theme was Oriental, and the decorations were made by the class spending long hours after school. By working together our relationships became much stronger, not only as teacher towards student but friend towards friend. During this year we organized a dance honoring Lynn Zelechowski. a fellow classmate who left Mattawan to continue her education in San Diego. California. We all miss her and hope she’s happy. As Seniors we organized a birthday party for Oyvind Arnessen. an exchange student from Norway. He’s made many new friends and seems to enjoy every minute here in America. On the same night we planned a going away party for Bonnie Yates, a good friend who’s been with us a long time, and had to move to Illinois. We hope to see her someday and hope memories of the good times won’t fade. So this is our last chance to say farewell. Thanks to the teachers, parents, and many friends who have helped us along the way. We leave you with gratitude, and pride. We walk with respect to wherever we’re headed. Julie Lowe. Jean Pendowski. Terri Neubauer, Cheryl DeVries, and Mr. Boyce. This year the Junior Class was led by the officers Jean Pendowski, Barb Sherman, Terri Neubauer, Juba Lowe, and trustee Cheryl DeVries. We had many money making projects this year including the annual Junior class magazine sale in which we broke the school record and brought in over $1,500 profit. We also controlled the concession stand during the football and basketball seasons. Along with the magazine sales and concessions we had several dances to bring in a few extra $100’s. Filled with great enthusiasm, as was our sophomore year, we won spirit week during Homecoming and Snocoming. We also won float competition during Homecoming with the theme “Declaration of Victory . This year’s prom with the theme “Stairway to Heaven” was sponsored, as always, by the Junior class and given to the departing senior class. The band that played was Diamond Rio. Choir which is under the direction of Miss Barbara Prior. The choir competed at Choir Festival for the first time and a member of the choir got a 1 rating at Solo Ensemble. The major project during the school year was the musical Of Thee I Sing but that is not all. The choir gave concerts, sang at assemblies, and at the Baccalaureate for the Seniors. All in all the choir made great progress this year. Due to the increased interest in choir, next year we are going to have two choirs again. Front Row: Julie Gates. Connie McConnel. Robyn Young. For those who may not know exactly what this class is the following brief explanation may clear up some questions. First of all, student activities is a class that meets once a day. It has the responsibility of trying to accomplish as many helpful projects to the Mattawan Schools as it can in the school year. The students who join Stu. Act. should be self motivated with a flair for creation. If you look around the school or remember some of the activities you have seen this year, there is a good chance that our Stu. Act. class has some part in it. Here are some of the activities that we have been involved in this year: Football Homecoming Activities at the game; The Homecoming dance; Parents nights for Football, Basketball (boys girls) and Volleyball; sponsoring a couple of dances; art work done in the bathrooms (the accomplishments of a few of our students); the Wildcat and Lettering over the Press Box; the Spring Clean-up; and the “Super Stars activities (even though they didn’t go with the student body). We have made about a thousand posters for you name it this year (including some work for the Musical). Some Painting of the National Colors in the gym was accomplished along with the Sponsoring of Echo Valley Night. All in all it does look as though we have accomplished a few activities for this year. Next year will hopefully bring some motivated students who want to spend some of their time to create and promote some new and exciting activities for the school year. 60 NEWSPAPER STAFF The MHS Newspaper titled the Profile” began the 1975-76 school year as its first year of operation and successfully completed the year going strong. The staff produced a monthly eight page issue. The Profile covers events such as sports, band and choir activities, and special happenings. Monthly features included a Horoscope and the Roving Reporter. The newspaper is printed by the Kalamazoo Enrichment Center. For the second year of publication hopes are to expand to 12 pages and sell advertising. Under the direction of Mr. Snow the following people have helped in the publication of the MHS Profile: Kris Pioch (Editor). Karen Eberly (Assistant Editor) Lauren Bryer (Art Coordinator). CANDY STRIPERS The Candy Stripers have had their Awards Presentation, and except for the summer volunteers the working year is over and the work of the Candy Striper is completly voluntary and appreciated a great deal by the hospital staff and the patients. The Candy Stripers work two hours a week, and among other things they are asked to deliver fresh drinking water, write letters for patients, read to patients, and water the patients' plants. Candy Striping is a good experience especially for someone who is interested in the medical profession. Mrs. DeYoung (sponsor). Marjorie Cowley. Michelle Ellis. Nell Hageman. Janet Perry. It is the largest book that Mattawan has ever had. We wanted to have graduation, the awards assembly, and spring sports in the yearbook this year so we had to have delivery of the book in the fall and the supplement in the summer. This year marked the first year in the history of the sport that the team sent an individual to the state meet which was held at Charlotte Country Club. Perry Henschke finished 14th out of 110 at the regional meet held at Watervliet and this strong finish earned him a run at the state meet. Mike Ewert was most valuable runner and Perry Henschke was the most improved runner. The team finished 8th out of 18 teams at the regional race. The team is looking forward to next season with five of the top seven runners returning. 66 GOLF TEAM Front: Dick Culp. Greg Gabry. David Gamber, Carl Baker. Dave Swanson. Walt Grabowski. A second place league finish — a State Record — a 6 wins 3 loss record and Plenty of action marked the 1975 football season for the Mattawan Wildcats. The competition was fierce and close as the Cats found themselves deadlocked at the end of regulation time in 3 games. The Delton Panthers came to town and left after being defeated in (double) overtime — 20 to 12. The last two games of the season found the Wildcats in the same situation and they responded with a 21 to 20 win over Galesburg and a 12 to 6 victory over a fired up Bloomingdale team. The victory over Bloomingdale gave the Cats a Michigan State Record of 3 overtime victories in one season and also left the team with a fine 6 - 3 record. Back to back losses a few years ago to Springfield 64-0 and Galesburg 70 - 14 were finally settled. Springfield was defeated 19-0 and was given a grand total of a negative 5 yards for the entire game. Victory over Galesburg in overtime left the Wildcats with the thrill of victory and also with a 2nd place finish, tied with Galesburg, in the league. The 1976 version of the Mattawan Wildcats should be a fine team with 19 of this year’s 6 - 3 team returning. The yearlings posted a fine 5-2-1 record with competition against two class A teams, two class B’s, and four C’s. Balanced scoring from the backfield led this years attack. The defensive efforts of the team were also outstanding with Mattawan scoring 174 points and our opponents only scoring 56. The 1975-76 Mattawan Girls' Junior Varsity Basketball Team was coached by Mrs. Sherri Meyle, middle school gym teacher. The team consisted of 12 highly spirited and enthusiastic girls who compiled a 5 win and 11 loss record. With ten freshmen playing their first year of basketball and two returning sophomores, the J.V.’s made full use of their skills, but found inexperience working against them. Kathy Kozminski in her first year led the team in total rebounding and Tracy French, a promising sophomore, swished many shots to lead the scoring column. The ten returning freshmen with the losing season behind them are looking forward to improving this year’s record. 78 VARSITY VOLLEYBALL Front Row: Kelly Toornman. Aurora Gonzales. Junior and Senior girls were picked at random and assigned a player to encourage and cheer for him during the season. Each girl kept her Pep Pal player a secret and distributed pep messages and small gifts to him just before a game. Julie Austin Hotel on Front Street Turn of the century Bill Buntz and Charlie Hosner Store on Front Street 91 MatUfwmi Main Street Stated 99 Year Ago It was back when the Michigan Central railroad was first pushing its track through this section that Nathaniel Cheseboro, bought 40 acres of land along the right of way and laid out the town of Mattawan, says the Kalamazoo Gazette. Its name came from a town situated on the Hudson river in New York. In 1850 the present main street began to form as the first grocery tore was erected. Slowly business began to enlarge, and a hotel was added to the village in 1855. Several such ventures were burned out, sold and changed until the present structure came along shortly after 1866. But the ravages of time have wreaked their vengeance and a gas-alin ÂŤta ir n ho taken over the premises. The first grape plants wort brought from New York, and the area soon began to step into the iead as a shipping point for fruit from this area. But strange as it may seem now, Mattawan first gained notice for its extensive cul ture of peaches. And as late as 1880 was shipping large quantities of thÂŤ fruit to far parts of the United States. The heavily wooded area a: und Mattawan in the 1800’s gave rise to a large lumber business, and much shipping of timber was carried on. and in 1869 the population had risen to 800 persons. But with curtailing of lumber shipping and camps the population began to slide and by 1880 the recession had hit 339 in habitants. Ot the old time buildings fronting on the main street only the imposing Congregational church stands now in all of its original splendor Frequent fires, with inadequate fighting methods, leveled most structures frum time to time. Near where the piesent .-chool stands the first instruction was started in a log cabin. Two successive fires disposed of this and its successor and finally the brick building which now houses the commercial club was erected. This gave way to a small building, which is still being used, and in turn a larger consolidated building has been erected. Like the mythical Phoenix, the desire to know continually springs forth anew. So we have emerged from the alchemist's curiosity to explore the boundless geometry of the molecule. And tomorrow's version of shaping matter will be even more awesome. But not alien, for it will have the familiarity of an old idea returned. Curiosity is the heart of science, of progress, of research. And research is the lifeline of The Upjohn Company. We continually remind ourselves that a good idea is never finished, but rather waiting for research to push it one step further. To that task we dedicate our resources.
