The theme for the floats was fairy tales and ours of Hansel and Gretel won 3rd place. Sponsoring our first dance was another of our accomplishments. The Freshman Class Officers were: Jeff Bowman, President; Chris Bjerregaard, Vice President; Cindy Boven, Secretary; and Cindy Pendowski, Treasurer. Our Sophomore year we once again elected class officers. This time they were: Tim MacPhee, President; Keith Worline, Vice President; Peggy Ryan, Secretary; and Cindy Pendowski, Treasurer. These four led us in the sponsoring of dances and asserting our place in the halls of the high school. Early in our Junior year we elected as class officers: Carolyn Shuster, President; Laura McKee, Vice President; Vicki Vosler, Secretary; and Debbie Campbell, Treasurer. We looked ahead to the hard work and fun of the Junior Senior activities to take place at the year's end, and sponsored many money-making activities for them. Both the Juniors and Seniors enjoyed the bowling night and the dinner-dance, a Hawaiian Luau. The best was yet to come, this our senior year. Our class officers elected this year were: Pam Wolff, President; Laura McKee, Vice President; Debbie Campbell, Secretary and Treasurer, Andrea Saunders. Many of us have involved ourselves with Co-op and Work Experience while, collectively, we have sponsored more fund-raising projects to finance our class trip. As the year comes to an end, we realize that soon we must leave our protected school atmosphere and venture into the world outside. We wish ourselves luck, happiness, and success, and we thank our teachers and administrators who have done their best to prepare us. Mrs. Phister, sponsor The Class of 76 began the year by electing four Juniors to represent them in school affairs: John Bowman, President, a returning officer; Dan Lowe, Vice President; Jan Derhammer, Secretary, also a returning officer; and Pete DeHaan. A new magazine subscription sales record was set this year by the Junior Class. Total amount of money brought in broke previous records and demonstrated the enthusiasm and spirit of this group of students. There has been various activities sponsored by the Juniors including a dance honoring Lynn Zelechowski who regretfully left Mattawan to continue her education in San Diego, California. We all wish Lynn success. Spring activities will include the Junior-Senior Prom and the Junior-Senior bowling night. With the sincere efforts of all Juniors, these should prove to be successful ventures. The Class of 76 was sponsored by Mr. John Boyce, Mrs. Beverly Haas, and Mrs. Rita Pfister. Their guidance throughout the year was greatly appreciated. 44 Randy Abernathy Scott Angel Julie Austin Steve Baker Sue Bingham Jon Bloom Diana Boop John Bowmon Trocy Bowman Steve Boyer Som Branham LaVonne Brooks Barb Budzinski Rosemory Budzinski Pam Bush Jim Butler Fred Chopp Bill Clark Scott Cleaver 8ob Cox Tom Crooks Dick Culp Sandy Damaske Carol DanKert Stan Darling Pete DeHaan Jan Derhommer Joe Drogicevich Joonne Eakes Kandi EHard MaryAnn French Tommy Fritzler Melanie Gaines Glenn Gallup Kofhy Gono Tom Gales Jim Geresy Dennis Goetle Aurora Gonzoles Dave Gorsline Jim Graham Mark Greer Jeannie Gross Dani Hanner Cindy Horn Sonjo Hawley Michelle Henwood Mike Holmon Barb Hopkins Loretta Imus Beth Johnson Ed Johnson Ernie Johnson Beth Jones Dan Knobloch Margie Kobreek Diane Konewko Leslie Kostakis Brenda Kovoch Bruno Kovacic Lori Krum Tom Lom Debbie Lowrence Darlene Ledbetter Lourie Lorenz Dick Lounsberry Don Lowe Nancy McHenry Tony McQueen Mary McQuesten Lorry Mejeur Kothy Menck Cheryle Miller Colette Moriarty Bill Moyle Denise Moyle Raymo Murankus Julie Nitz Rick Ostermon Michelle Owsiony Sharon Pederson Mike Pendowski Kem Petto Laurie Poldermon Rich Pomeroy Greg Pontius Vicky Russell John Ruzick Amy Sockett Willie Sanchez Alice Schindler Dove Schlukebir Mory Schroeder Brendo Sexton Mary Sherman Spring Short Ken Shuster Dennis Simmons Gail Simpson Dario Sirrine Mike Smeod Jennifer Smith Debbie Snow Dave Stachowiak Bob St. Cloir Dove Thompson Nick Vanden Beldt Cindy VonVoorst Vicki VanWhy Jenny Vero Dove Wolters Chris Weese Mott Weese Terri White Tom Williams Scheme Willis Steve Worline Bonnie Yates Mike Yoder Mary Young L. to R.: Mr. Nolan, sponsor, Julie Lowe. Barb Sherman This year the Sophomore Class elected: Julie Lowe, President; Barb Sherman, Vice President; Jean Pendowski, Secretary; and Terri Neubauer, Treasurer; to represent them in the school activities. We began our Sophomore year with the first dance of the year on September 13, after a victorious football game. We made a profit of $75.60. During Homecoming week, our class didn't do too well on spirit, but on Friday night, October 18, we came back with a roaring first in float competition. Our float was a flintstone car with the motto, RUN 'EM DOWN . We also held a T.V. raffle in which we made a profit of $287.23. This was our largest income for the year. We held another dance on February 1st. Dave Thompson, the D.J. for WKMI, accompanied us. On the whole, we are proud of our over-all school spirit this year, and we, the Sophomore Class, feel privileged in representing Mattawan High School. 50 Terri Alford Scott Ardis Sherry Avord Skip Beers Roxanne Bercik Tracy Berglund Dan Bloom Diane Bohne Pom Bolden Croig Bontrager Mary Boven Rick Branham Terri Brisky Roy Brockie Roy Brooks Woody Brown Lauren Bryer Nancy Bullard Scott Burrows Greg Cashen Dave Chodos Ted Chopp Joanne Christion Tom Clark Carla Collins Wesley Cromer Pom Crawford Chris Crooks Jean Curtis Cheryl Cutler { Stever Cutler Don Dovis Vicki Davis Glenn Dearth Steve DeDoes Cheryl DeVries Grant Dopheide Laurie Drenth Karen Eberly Grant Eggen Dennis Ellison Ed Elmore Mike Ewert Frank Farthing Becky Fuller Bill Gaines Kathy Gallup Julie Gates Aida Gonzales Laurie Goodman Jim Griffith Pot Gustafson Ed Hogeman Paul Hal! CROSS COUNTRY This season was Mattawan’s third in this varsity sport. Several accomplishments were made this year. It was the school s first winning season. The team placed 10th in the regional meet. The team hosted an invitational during the first week of the season and won the championship trophy. The team also came from last place in the KVA in 1973 to finish in 2nd place behind a strong Parchment team. As this was only the second year for the team this was to be expected, but not quite as rapidly. A third place finish in the KVA meet held at Milham Park Golf Course brought the team to a final fourth place finish in the league. Mark Rit-sema with an individual third place in this meet forcasted the team's fine showing. A few strokes here or there could have improved the squads final four wins and ten loss record. However, a new team scoring mark and an improved team scoring average helped to boost the squad's morale. Mark Ritsema had the best individual average for the year. Back row: Mr. Binder. The team managed to begin the year on a winning note and won every other week to finish the year. High points in the season were found in a Victory over the eventual Southwestern League Champion, Decatur by a 14 to 8 margin and a see-saw battle with class B Delton which found the Wildcats on top also. Close games, in terms of the hard fought nature of the game, were with eventual KVA Champ Parchment and Galesburg. A Detroit area team ventured into Mattawan and managed to squeak out a tight victory with the final score being Dearborn Sacred Heart 14 and Mattawan 1 2. The Wildcats return 13 of this year's squad of 25 and will, of course, say good-bye to 12 seniors. Many of these young men have spent as many as 5 years playing for Wildcat football teams and have developed into a winning unit, not only on the field, but in other endeavors. Every young man had lots of playing time and learned a lot. We began the season out with tough matches as 5 of our 7 opponents were either J.V., class A , or class B opponents. After suffering losses in our first two games the freshmen bounced back and won the next three to up their record before dropping the final two decisions to a tough class A South team and class B Delton. The team won 70 percent of their games, most being very close in score! They finished the season with an impressive 16-7 record. The team placed third in the tough KVA league but never gave up throughout the season. In the tournament games the girls defeated a strong Kalamazoo Christian team to take the district title (their second in two years), then advanced only to be defeated in the regional finals at White Pigeon. The senior members of the team were Michelle Moriarty and Jean Loedeman, who also were co-captains of the squad. This year's team displayed balance scoring and tough defense. These were the key factors to a winning season!
