Light Blue Dark Blue White Carnation The class of 73”, it went so fast. . . too fast! For some, sparkling eyes and a cheerful smile, but for others, tearful eyes and a sad frown. Some of us will be going on to college to study for our future but others will be setting out to work and even marriage. It seems like only yesterday we were all so anxious to start kindergarten. There’s so much to do and plan. Like ordering announcements, our senior pictures, senior keys, caps and gowns, and planning and earning money for our senior trip. Whether or not anyone wants to admit it, deep down inside of everyone, there is a tear of sadness. We won’t be seeing so many of our friends anymore and we’ll miss so many of the great times we had in the past 13 years, especially the past 4 which were the most important. They attended Band Camp for a week in August, and their efforts resulted in a 1st division rating for the Mattawan Wildcat Marching Band at the Marching Festival. Marching season included evening practices every week and the band provided excellent halftime entertainment for football. Concert season got off to a fast start with the Christmas Concert, and several new events in the instrumental music department. The wind ensemble was organized and several of its members attained chairs in the District All-Star Band. This involved competing with musicians from schools of all classes. Mattawan was represented by 5 of its most outstanding players. A lot of work went into preparing for Solo and Ensemble Festivals, both local and district. All of Mattawans band members participated in the local event, and those who received a rating of 1st division, went on to the District Festival which was held at Mattawan for the first time. Mattawans students did an excellent job, and many will be going on to state solo ensemble festival. The band will also be participating in the band festivals, both District and State. Other spring activities will include the Spring concert and the Memorial Day Parade. Two more of Mattawans best musicians will be given the opportunity to attend the Interlochen National Music Camp, and the summer band program will keep everybody busy. Then once again, next years activities will get off to a good start with the Wildcat Marching Band back at camp. 56 57 BOWLING CLUB Front: Sponsor-Mrs. Rouse, Cindy VanVoorst, Sue Reva, Debbie Lorenz, Diane Treistrum, Margie Marks, Cathy Van-Voorst, Sponsor-Mrs. Loedeman Back: John Ruzick, Dan Knobloch, Dave Gorsline, Larry Mejeur, Bruno Kovacic, Tim MacPhee, Randy Wiley The Bowling Club is sponsored by Mrs. Rouse and Mrs. Loedman. After a slow start the team got rolling against G-A and although lossing 24 to 12, we held the Rams to under 100 yards on the ground, an accomplishment no other team has done to Galesburg for the last 12 years. That game was followed by the Cats winning 3 of its last 4 contests, one of which included a 20 to 14, come from behind victory over our homecoming opponent, Parchmant. We will miss the services of our seniors next fall but will have a solid group of returning lettermen (11) led by All-State Candidate, Greg Alexander. Greg was a two way man for Mattawan and received, along with Joe Franzone, All KVA Honors. Greg also was voted on the WOTV class C D All-Starr team and he received some honorable mention from the Detroit Free Press All State Team. Returning for another year will be Joe Kozminske, a team offense leader and received Honorable Mention All-KVA, and hard hitting Steve Cronkhite, who led our team on defense this fall. This group of fine returning seniors will be joined by a small number of sophomores who managed to compile a 4-4-1 record with 14 team members. The entire football program for the 72 season found our teams producing the following records; 8th grade: 4-2, Freshmen: 5-2, Sophomores: 4-4-1, and Varsity: 4-5. This 17 win 13 loss and 1 tie season should improve next fall if the attitude and desire of our players and fans continue to increase. The potential is there for the Wildcats to do the job and that’s exactly what we intend to do. 76 SENIORS 55 66 44 40 21 22 24 42 68 80 76 85 86 60 Dave Menzie Gary Schroeder Thom Coles Eric Bjerregaard I aMarr Brooks Dick Moyle Joe Franzone Craig Riddle Chuck Sherman Tim Glidden Mark Manning Rick Kuiper Norm Brown Kevin Baker 77 JV FOOTBALL Front: 75 Felix Sanchez, 30 Gary Mohney, 40 Kelly Johnson, 44 Keith Worline, 22 Ray Steadman, 24 Tim MacPhee, 64 Mike Ow-siany Back: 10 LaMont Brooks, 72 Kevin Ringler, 86 Kit Gunnell, 68 Jerry Neubauer, 85 Dave Henson, 34 Andy Jean, 20 Jeff Bowman Coach: John Hamilton This years JV Football team was made up of (14) young men who saw when they put out a little extra effort their effort would be rewarded with a win. TRACK MATTAWANS TRACK team had its best season ever as it ran its dual meet record to 5-1. The only team that could beat Mattawan was Bangor and that meet went down to the last event. Mattawan also took a run at the KVA title but had to settle for second as Parchment won the big event. Big scorer was Rick Kuiper who scored a school record, 114 pts. Rick also broke the high jump record going 5’9' 6”. Other records were: Dick Moyle running 52.8 in the 440 and Bob Purk, 11:08 in the 2 mile. Also three relay records were broken as Dave Worline, Keith Worline, Marv Imus, and Pat Goswick ran the 440 yd relay in 47.4 and the 880 relay in 1:38. Dick Moyle, Darwin Stenburg, Marty Rouse, and Ed Dustin broke the mile relay running the event in 3:48. A new sport was started this past fall as Mattawan initiated a Cross Country program. The schedule included seventeen duals with such powers as Parchment, Hackett, Comstock, and Dowagiac as the Wildcats jumped right into tough competition. The meets were run over a three mile course and Mattawan even constructed their own home course behind the football field. Cross Country is a good conditioning sport and a good spectator sport so watch for the schedule and attend a home meet. The track picture also was not available.
