VARSITY BASKETBALL Mattawan enjoyed one of its finest basketball seasons this past year With only one starter back from last year's K.V.A. Tournament champions, Coaoh Walt Piggott molded a team which won eleven games while losing but eight. Two sohool records were broken during the Climax game. The total game score was set as the Wildcats threw in 86 points. Bob Boyer's 27 point total shattered the individual scoring mark. One crowning feat of which the Mattawan team members were very proud, was their viotory over neighboring Paw Paw in the opening game. This happened to be the lone defeat Paw Paw suffered all season. Two of the players were elected to post season teams for their fine play. Bill Francis' name adorned the roster of the K.V.A. All Star team and Fred Bowamn was placed on the Gazette All-Southwestern Michigan second team. Bowamn was elected Honorary Captain by his team mates and Joel Lemmer was the recipient of the Most Improved Player award. RESERVE FOOTBALL The 1953 reserve football squad had a fairly successful season as they finished with a record of one win, three losses and one tie In the opening encounter of the season, the little Wildcats” lost a hard fought 21-12 decision to Paw Paw They played by far the best game of the campaign at Vicksburg as they swamped the Bulldogs” seconds 18-0 The next two games went to the opponents who were Bangor and Comstock by scores of 6-0 and 20-6 respectively The squad traveled to Galesburg for their final test of the season and ended up with a 7-7 tie in a hard fought battle Standing left to rights Coach Wheeler, Fred Brisky, David Williams, Tom Brown, Jim Russell, Roger Wagy, Ed Cleaver, David Cowley, Hayes Brown, Jay Brock and Coach Piggott Seated left to rights Duane Simonds, Jaok Simonds, Terry Glidden, Harry Blanchard, Mike Stone, Paul Aleksich, Philip Rolff, Garrett Korteway, and John McGrow

RESERVE BASKETBALL The 1953-54 reserve basketball team ended their season with a record of 8 wins and 6 loses. After losing their first two contests to Paw Paw and Richland by 23-14 and 39-38 scores, respectively, they won three straight games. From then on they were headed for a winning season. Their 6-4 league record was good for a second place tie in the league.
