Each class selected a king and queen candidate; these two were representatives of that particular class. Participation was the key word - every member of the student body was encouraged to be involved, for there were many activities to be involved in. Throughout the week, there were indoor and outdoor events, skits, snow sculptures, and posters. Also, there were king and queen races for the candidates, which filled the gym with enthusiasm. Because this year's theme was Fairy Tales, there seemed to be magic everywhere. Magic that was shared not only by classmates, but by every person of Mattanawcook Academy. This magic was brought about by spirit and good sportsmanship, which always brightens a Winter Carnival, ,4s in many fairy tales, a king and queen are needed to add color to the story. The runners-up of this Winter Carnival were Stephanie Taylor and David Nantkes from the class of 1984. The Queen and King were Terry Vish and Willie Bard from the class of 1983. 46 KING QUEEN RACES Terry Vish CLASS OF 83 Willie Bard Steph Taylor CLASS OF 84 David Nantkes Jennifer Dill CLASS OF 85 Aaron Boynton Kelly Walcott CLASS OF 86 Kemp Potter 47 SKITS . . The number of friends made increases each day. Together they share govern- ment processes and extracurricular activities. This pro- gram acquaints a select group of Juniors from Maine high schools with the UMO campus. Two days were spent informing participants about the different oppor- tunities that the University offers. Tours and lectures explaining the programs at UMO were given each day. A test was given as a competition for scholarships of different degrees. Much time was spent simply enjoy- ing campus life. The representatives of Mattanawcook Academy for the '82 program were Jolene Gall, Jean Stevens, Kim Sutherland, and Richard Theriault. GIRLS TRIO The girls trio is a group composed of nine girls. During the year, they performed at the Christmas Concert, Open House, the Coronation, and various other events. The girls practiced every week after school under the direction of Mr. Porter. Members are Christine Ocana, Sandra Lindsay, Michelle Fol- ster, Marjo Hyde, Sandra Gary, Sally MacEachern, Susan Epp, Sandra Chesley, and Kathy Lane. After months of diligent work, we, the Editors of the 1983 Pine Needles would like to present this yearbook to you, the student body. At this time, we feel that it is appropriate to thank all the members who gave their support and time to make it a success. Also, we would like to thank Mr. Jenkins for all the assistance he gave throughout the year. We hope this yearbook captures the memories of 1983 that are imprinted in your mind. Vocational School is open to any student who is a Junior or Senior. There are several courses offered in the vocational program. They are Automobile Mechanics, Building Trades, Forest Harvesting, Food Service, Electricity, Welding, and Health Occupations. Automobile Mechanics is designed to provide the basic skills necessary to diagnose, service, and repair an automobile. Instruction is carried out on a unitized approach with the emphasis on learning how to learn. This is done so that students will have no trouble adjusting to this constantly changing profession. Building Trades is a basic course in building construction that includes some building experience on different types of structures. Students with special interest in electrical or plumbing work may proceed on an individual basis in those fields. Successful completion of this program will enable a student to begin work at an entry in the field of construction. The Forest Harvesting Program consists largely of production wood harvesting method and skills. Students who participate in this program are outside for most of their class time. After completion of this course, jobs in the Logging Industry are available. Food Service is a program designed for individuals entering the hospitality industry. Students are taught the principles of large quanity cooking. An actual snack bar and dining facility is operated by the students for practice purposes. The students in the Electricity program are taught the fundamentals as well as the concepts of the basic equipment. These skills are necessary to prepare them for an entry into an industrial, commercial, or private apprenticeship program. The students become familiar with and work with the electical theory and tools. They also test equipment of the trade and electrical codes. The Welding program privides an opportunity for all students to gain a basic education in the welding and metal fabrication field. They create work habits and attitudes conducive to successful employment. This program is divided into Welding I and Welding II courses. The Health Occupations Program is designed to provide basic knowledge and skills for persons interested in entering the health care field. An essential part of this program is actual patient contact during clinical experience at local hospitals and nursing homes. Successful completion of this program prepares students for entry into many health care occupations. 62 ALL IN A DAY’S WORK . . . CANDIDS PLUS Lynx Spirit! Gross Me Out! Musicians at Large! For the 33 boys involved in the M.A. Varsity Football program, the fall of 1982 was very disappoint- ing. The 7 seniors, 18 juniors, and 8 sophomores began practice on August 9th with high hopes, great expectations, and dreams that did not materialize. Numerous early season injuries to key personel hindered the team's efforts at consistency in execution and we never gained the confidence needed to perform as a dominating unit. Wins and losses are important to an athletic team, but the individuals who compose the team, and how they respond to adverse situations, are even more important. Our captains John Trask, Terry Trott, and Jeff Weatherbee worked diligently throughout the season to keep the team unified and all of the boys worked hard in practice, kept a positive attitude, and behaved like winners on the field all the way up to the final game at Garland Street Field against John Bapst High School. The boys should certainly be commended on their positive contributions and response to the season of 1982. FOOTBALL CHEERING Julie Worcester. Theresa Pond. Leslie Shorey. Ann Sandman. Betty Ramsay. Jennifer Dill. Chris Ocana, Kim Thornton 70 GOLF Mark Mulligan Derek Ayer Steve Michaud Kenyon Campbell Harold Casey Eric Sandman Steve McConnell Brent Murchison Steve Merritt Keith Priest The M.A. golf team completed with a record of five wins and four losses for the 1982-1983 season. This represented a second winning season in a row and the third in four years to be enjoyed by the nucleus of Seniors of the team. The Lynx ’ regular season record was somewhat of a disappointment, but it did qualify them for the Penquis League Championship Tournament. It was at the Penquis Leagues that we got a measure of revenge. Some Superb playing by our numbers 3 and 4 men, Mark Mulligan and Steve McConnell, enabled us to capture third place in the League, defeating two teams that had beaten us during the regular season. We also participat ed in the state tournament as Senior Eric Sandman once again qualified for further competition. The Lynx will be hurt badly by graduation. We will lose not only some fine golfers, but also some good leadership when Eric Sandman, Harold Casey, and Troy Littlefield go their ways in June. They have been the glue which held our team together and they will be sorely missed. There is hope, however. Lettermen Brent Murchison, Mark Mulligan, Steve Merrit, and Steve McConnell will return. Last year also marked the biggest turnout for golf at M.A. in the last ten years. If the returning lettermen and the potentially strong returnees as Derek Ayer, Steve Michaud, and Harley Sprout work hard over the summer, the Lynx may be able to rebound in 83 84. 71 Tiffany Littlefield. Mattanawcook Academy's team competed at UMO with various high schools around eastern Maine. Certain members later qualified for the States. The team used the season as a rebuilding year as they have only one senior. Stanley Mott, out of a team of eighteen. The majority of the team was composed of juniors. There were eight juniors, six sophomores, and three freshmen. In a rebuilding year such as this one, great care was taken in keeping morale high. Therefore, the best aid for the team and their success was support of the team by all the loyal fans who attended the matches. 77 X Oc CO BASKETBALL CHEERING i T Y Loree Smith Julie Worcester Sally MacEachem Leslie Shorey Theresa Pond Mary Cahill Jennifer Dill Jolene Gall Valerie Bryer Angela McLaughlin Candy Stone Angela Goodwin Deanna Michaud Andrea Smith Tina Barker Jeanine Bard Bettina McMahan Darlene Delaney 78 Greg Brown. The laughter and joys we shared Are still very much alive in my mind. The sadness and tears are also in my thoughts. But, what was most important. We came through these times together. Our friendship had grown as well as we did. The saying is true, I guess . .. That we never really appreciate What we have Until it is no longer with us. Such is the case with you And with Mattanawcook Academy itself. Before I leave the grounds, I take another look at this isolated school. Why can't we be together again for one year? A half of a year? A month? My mind is boggled And I angrily kick the wall of bricks. As I walk away, Tears flow from my eyes . . . Not for the ache of my foot, But for the ache of my heart ...
