He was a father figure and confi- dent to many students, a friend to all. During his career here, Mr. Curry impressed upon his students his own high moral standards. He earned the respect and admiration of students because he was and is an honest, caring man who has a laughing word for everyone. We shall remember him fondly as an out- standing example of manhood. Thank you. Coach. Gene S. Wilbur Clarence S. Thompson Donald W. Ballard Gene S. Wilbur - Principal; B.S. Ed. Bridgewater, M. Ed. UMO; 3 yrs. at M.A. Clarence S. Thompson - Asst. Shortly, you will be leaving M.A. to assume your rightful role in the adult world. May that transition be a smooth one, and may your role prove a satisfying one - to you and all about you. It is a great honor and each member should regard it as such. This year's members are the following: Fresh- man - Julie Worcester, Kim Stewart, and Jill Caron; Sophomores - Wanda Kimball, Jill Tolman, and Mary Cahill; Juniors - Lynda Gilpatrick (Treasurer), Angie Smith, Felicia Murchison, and Melanie Michaud; Sen- iors - Lynn Picard (President). Ann Downs (Vice President), Jeanne Richards (Secretary), and Jan Griffin. Student Council members must serve the purpose of unifying the bond between the students and ad- ministration. They must be constantly aware of wants and needs of students, and present these ideas at their meeetings. 54 MATTANAWCOOK CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Row 1: Jan Griffin, Ingrid Brown, Starr Whitney, Robin Clay, Ann Downs, Joan Stevenson, Cathy Sandman. Row 2: Wendy Polk, Mike Sutherland, Greg Blake, Mitchell Sturgeon, Lynda Gilpatrick, Denise Savage. One of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a high school student is membership in the National Honor Society. However, mem- bership is considered more than an honor; it carries with it a reponsi- bility and should be considered the beginning of an obligation. Once selected for membership, the student should not only continue to demonstrate those outstanding qualities which brought about his selection, but should also exert a new influence to improve conditions about him and promote those qualities, Character, Leadership, Ser- vice, and Scholarship, for which the National Honor Society stands. 55 M.A. BAND AND CHORUS Kathy Lane Sandra Chesley Stacey Brown Jeanne Richards Lorraine Dill Tracy Quirion Cathy Thibodeau Melanie Michaud Laurie Thornton Kathie Folster Jori King Beth Mason Sarah Smart Crystal Williams Betty Jipson Shelly Hurd Kendra Jipson Mary Cahill Jill Caron Leslie Shorey Penny Cottle Lynn Gordan Joan Young Sally Moulton Darla King Peggy Jipson Donna Delaney Wendy Polk Kathy Sibley Michelle Foss Kelly Cole Melva McFalls Bill Thornton Oarlene Ireland Eric Albert Reggie Adams John Curry Jason Morrison Carrie Dolan Starr Whitney Debbie Ireland Tammy Trott Bill Jipson Mike Lachapelle Tim Barker Jodi Theberg Kevin Sutherland Bert Weed Kyle Tardy John Hawkins Barry Thompson Doug Jipson John Trask Shawna McMullen Penny Nash Philip Hannigan Sandra Perry Kim Stewert Doug Jipson Sandra Lindsay Lisa McCormick Jill Tolman Bobby Dundas Carole Hamm Jeff Schick Jean Stevens Brent Haynes Jamie Hyde Lee Haskell Karen Ocana Ro in Clay Sarah Smart Field Director The Music Department continues to show growth this year 1 A with 20 finger-tumbling Freshman taking the place of 9 graduat- J ed Seniors, bringing the Band up to 74 members. The Chorus swelled dramatically to over 50 members, keeping quality pace with quantity, and becoming a performing group M.A. is quite proud of. Music programs through the year include: Football Band (re- member the Scramble!), 2nd Annual Holiday Concert, and the 2nd Annual Choral Concert, as well as Pep Band, the 8th Annual Pops Concert, Winter Carnival, Pep Rallies, and Gradu- ation. The Music Departmetn demonstrates to the community and state that M.A. has much musical talent to be proud of. The music program, in all phases, is directed by Mr. Larry Porter. 68 DRAMA CLUB The M.A. Drama Club, advised by Mr. Larry Porter and Mr. Bob Asselin. has held regular meetings every Wednesday. They aided the Senior play by doing set construction, make-up, and lighting. The drama Club is planning on going to Orono to see the musical “The Music Man” which is the musical they are going to present in March. Several members are to be initiated into the Mat- tanawcook chapter of the International Thespian So- ciety as charter members. BOYS’ STATE L to R: Michael Sutherland. Greg Blake. The theme chosen this year was Cartoons. Winter Carnival included some of the following events: intro- duction of the King and Queen candidates chosen by each class, indoor events, dress-up day in reference to the theme, King and Queen races, posters, and individual class skits. Outdoor events and sculptures were cancelled because of the weather. The Coronation ceremony was held Friday, Feb. 13. The mistress of ceremonies was Lynn Picard, and she presented each class with their awards. Overall, the King and Queen of the 1981 Winter Carnival were Tim Cahill and Lynda Gilpatrick. The runner ups were Steve Neal and Sue McCarthy. Coronation Ball officially ended the week of Winter Carnival. The impressive performance from one of New England’s finest and top bands, “Sky High made the ball a memorable occasion for all who attended. 74 75 FALL CHEERLEADERS Row 1: Lori Pond, Lynda Gilpatrick, Melanie Michaud, Lisa McLaughlin, Laurie Thornton; Row 2: Karen Corro, Karen Ocana, Carmen Davis J V Row 1; Lisa Ryder. I wish to express my sincere thanks for an excel- lent season. This has been the best season ever for a M.A. Field Hockey team. Finishing the season at a mark of 8 wins and 5 losses and entering the playoffs in sixth place are among some of your achievements this season. Outstanding performances from Seniors Darlene Ireland and Sue McCarthy and Freshman Goalie Jill Cunningham further exemplify the teams’ achievements. This has been the second time in the last 3 years that you have tasted playoff action; each time put- ting on great performances, but just coming up short. Being made up of two seniors, seven juniors, elev- en sophomores, and seven freshman should indicate successful years ahead. Again I thank each of you for the smiles and the frowns and look forward to the season ahead with great enthusiasm. In August we saw the arrival of 60 boys to training camp; boys intent on being the best players they could be. In Sep- tember we experienced 2 bitterly disappointing losses to Orono and Bucksport ... the 2 teams which eventually squared off for the league championship. And in the November cold at Millinocket we watched a large group of exceptionally talanted seniors, who extended their 3 year varsity record to 20-9, run their last game for the maroon and gray and for the only high school coach they had ever known or played under . .. Dale Curry. It was in that game that the boys gave their ultimate effort and that Bert Budge, a unanimous choice as All- LTC running back, broke the M.A. single season rushing record by running his total yardage to 1,260 yds. It was a season that the players, coaches, and fans will remember always. CROSS COUNTRY TEAM Row 1: Henry Murchison. Chris Ocana, Jeff Stevens. Stephanie Brown, Eugene Stratton, Ellen Boss. It placed 3rd in the Penquis League and 8th in Eastern Maine. This past season the M.A. Cross Country team posted a 9-3 record for the regular season. Freshman, Steaphanie Brown and Senior, Eugene Stratton qualified for the state meet. Other outstanding performances were turned in by Juniors, Jay Leonard and Tom Tash, and Fresh- man, Jeff Stevens. While the Varsity did not qualify for the tourney, finishing in 13th place one position out, their record of 8-8 represents a considerable accomplishment and improve- ment from the beginning of the season to its end. At Christmas the girls were 1-6 meaning they finished at a 7-2 pace. Our JV team was very competitive despite their record of 4-10. There were only two games in the course of the season which they lost by more than 10 points. It was by far the most competitive JV team at M.A. in years. This fine JV team plus an outstanding group of returning Varsity ball players makes us hopeful that we can replace our fine captain, Sue McCarthy and gives us cause for optimism as we begin work for next year. 67 Row 1: Robin Ryder, Mike LaChapelle; Row 2: Coach Sibley. On Dec. 1. 1980, 24 M.A. girls and boys began training to compete in the highly competitive Eastern Main Indoor Track League. The league schedule was composed of 8 meets, all run at the University of Maine at Orono Fieldhouse, and included such EM powers as Brewer, M.D.I., and Old Town. The goal of this first year team was to be competitive, not necessarily to win a championship, but to prove they would compete on an equal level with the best. The team achieved their goal. By the seasons end on Feb. 14, Martin Leavitt ranked 4th in EM in the shot put. Jay Leonard was 4th in EM in the high jump and 5th in the state in that event. The relay team of Greg Blake, Ben Moore, Mike Sutherland, and Bert Budge placed 5th in EM. In the state meet Jamie Brown stepped in to relay and the team finished 6th. Also distinguishing themselves as top cometitors were high scorers for M.A., Dan Crocker and Mitch Sturgeon. In the girls' competition, Stephanie Brown set an M.A. record in the mile run with a time of 5:58.4 and Kim Stewart did likewise in the shot put with a throw of 27’10”. In the EM Championships the girls distinguished themselves in the 60 yd. dash as 3 of the 6 finalists wore the Lynx maroon and gray. Ellen Boss finished 6th, Starr Whitney 2nd, and Kim Sutherland 1st. Kim and Starr also finished 4th and 6th respectively in the 300 yd. dash. MEDAL WINNERS But the high point and most dramatic performance of the indoor season was turned in by the 880 relay team of Ellen Boss, Felicia Murchison, Starr Whitney, and Kim Sutherland. These 4 girls established themselves as both EM and State of Maine Champions, as they easily outdistanced a field of fine relay teams. In addition to winning the gold medals, they also set new EM and State records with respective times of 1:55.8 and 1:54.4 and proved themselves the best in the state. The team should be commended for their fine season and record setting performances. They worked out in ice. snow, and sub zero temperatures and they certainly have caused to be proud of their accomplishments. We knocked on many doors asking businesses for their support. In early September we organized a car wash as a money making project. We gathered buckets and sponges and even passed out flyers announcing the car wash. It would have been a complete success had it not rained. Almost immediately after school began plans were made to start taking pictures of sports and activities. Some pictures had to be reshot thanks to Mr. Jenkins forgetting how to put film in the camera. The Yearbook Staff put many long hours into the book. During these long hours there were many disagreement, arguements, and even tears. Many of these long hours were spent developing, printir g pictures, and designing the pages. We hope to have represented every aspect of M.A. for the 1980-81 school year. The Yearbook Staff would like to take this opportunity to thank the advertisers, teachers, students, and especially Mr. Jenkins, our advisor. Without this combination of help and support the yearbook certainly could not have been a success.
