TO YOU, MISS RICHARD We, the class of 1980, are pleased and honored to dedicate your yearbook to Miss Mary Richard. Miss Richard has given much of her time to Mattanawcook Academy, but especially to the Senior Class. She is a loving, dedicated teacher and these virtues reflect in everything that she does. She is always there, whether it be chaperoning a dance, or supervising sculptures at 10° below zero. Miss Richard, we all appreciate everything you have done for us, and we wish that we could do more for you. This dedication is only a small portion of our gratitude. Thanks, and we love you! 2 The Class of 1980 FACULTY KEY: 1. Gene Wilbur, Principal 2. Peter Lucas, Business Ed. 3. Joyce Fish, Audio Visual 4. William Welch, Science 5. Norman Ford, Science 6. MATTANAWCOOK CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL HONOR Membership in the National Honor Society has become recognized nationally as one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a high-school student. Membership is, however, more than an honor; it carries with it a responsibility and should be considered the beginning of an obligation, not merely the successful culmination of an effort to achieve recognition and honor. Once selected for membership, a student is singled out. He should not only continue to demonstrate those outstanding qualities which brought about his selection, but he should also exert a new influence to improve conditions about him and promote those qualities. Leadership. Character, Scholarship, and Service, for which the National Honor Society stands. The memo So tny n Becau e ay ne-ap U et youn Mange For many years Mary Hanscom has been a dedicated Lynx fan. She is always present at high school sporting events, and one can usually find her keeping score with a radio up to her ear. Mary is a stalwart fan whose faith in our Lynx never wavers. It wouldn't feel like a real game if Mary and her husband, Trafton. weren't there. We, the senior closs of 1980, feel that Mrs. Hanscom deserves special recognition for her dedication to M.A. sports. Therefore, we are setting aside this page in her honor. Mary, we love and adore you, and we hope that you will continue to support M.A. teams for years to come! 77 DESIDERATA Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly, and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others you may become vain and bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is, many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth; Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you. no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life Keep peace with your soul. With all its shame, drudgery and broken dreams, it still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. MAX EHRMANN 1927 by Max Ehrmann. All rights reserved. Copyright renewed 1954 by Bertha K. Ehrmann. Reprinted by permission Robert L. Bell.
