Lancaster. mm The June sunshine watched, smiling j A faint breeze caught a tassle of maroon in its grasp Then a whispered hush enclosed the confusion Hands clasped and solemn eyes met and dropped Capped and gowned statues stood waiting ??, together, Slowly the saddened pipes of the organ stirred Excitement echoed through the quiet halls Breathlessly the procession began Suddenly a slent sob and a tearstained face So quickly time fled- Too swiftly from a dream to reality The pipes swelled again Bowed heads and hand-clasped diplomas gathered together with yesterday's,memories Still the June sunshine watched, smiling and the breeze tossed maroon tassles. But now the capped and gowned statues no longer waited For together, they had witnessed the graduation. Goodbye. MR. WELCH MRS. NIGHTINGALE MRS. HAMM MRS. CLIFFORD MR. WORCESTOR F a c u 1 t y MR. As a result of some rather commendable performances from Freshman, S. Cole; Sophomores, D. Libbey R. Stevens; and Juniors, P. Loupin K. Ritchie; the 19 73 M.A. Cross Country team finished the sea- son with more wins (9) to its credit than any other X-C team at this school since 1969. Some of the reasons why these boys had the incentive to excell are Freshman, R. Theriault; Sophomores, M. Peters G. Fish; Junior, D. Dupont; and Senior, R. Mac- Eachern; who were all right on the heels of those fellows. We finished the season looking forward to 19 74. With our present team we feel we have the capabili- ties of going to the State Meet. But what is exciting to hear are the rumors of several good prospects with good potential who are going out for the 1974 team to challenge these boys for their positions. It is also good to know that there are several girls, headed up by Gail Leavitt, who want to participate in the sport. Best of Luck in your running, Alan Stevens 05 00 56 57 BACKS ROW 1: J. Brenda Lancaster BACKROW VIEWPOINT Here we go again, The laughter, the vague eyes The foolish grins Chewing fingernails Stupid hair NO! Blink, flutter Oh, boy! With enemies like that- Who needs friends? Brenda Lancaster AUTUMN MAINE As the geese fly over the river Bodies silhouetting in the golden hue Of a Marine autumn in flaming orange And a never-ending view. Leaves, their scarlet lending Paint to the easel of the forest bright A regal buck advancing from a golden field Is only one autumn sight. The wild call of those geese As they fly into the rain Tell me of where I long to be In the countryside of Maine. The tall gray forms of city structure Devoid of color I have known Only tend to trap and imprison me On my journey home. Roger Stevens THE GAME •The day was cold and dreary; We had lost another game. They were happy to have won; We were filled with shame. When the game is nearly over And colder it had grown. You were on the bench praying But the fans had all gone home. Lord knows we tried our hardest But a poor game we had shown. We were filled with agony, For another game we'd blown We knew come Monday afternoon Sprints we'd have to run again; For while we tried our hardest The game we did not win. I often stop to wonder, Is anyone on our side. They'll all call us bums, And they wonder where's our pride. Glory, or defeat, I know which one we'd choose, Because next week I will laugh at them, Next week we will not lose. Richard Broderick 71 The Buck Slowly, stealthily, from out of the thicket, The homed monarch now appears. Head held low for the antlered crown, Grown larger by the years. Ten springs and summers it's endured, Small volleys of bullets have hit their mark. But now no bullets have hit their mark. Could break that regal heart. Pain it feels in every step, As winter comes and goes. Its eyes now dull have seen the days, Of winter with ice and snow. The sunbreaks out of its cloudy home, And beats down upon his back of bronze. The sun divides and reflects. On his last set of fall horns. As he bathes in its golden luster, His eyes detect glittering steel. As thunder rocks the mountain, Now no pain does he feel. Roger Stevens 72 The Drunk There he was: A little old red-faced man, Alternately stumbling and weaving down the pathway His eyes were like hot coals-burning and burning His face was contorted in such a way, It seemed he was crying from his very soul. The old man fell face down on the pathway And he never moved again, Every flicker of life gone In his hand was his eternal hell. His lips were slightly parted, yellow teeth showing His eyes were still open-though shocked motionless His soul was still-hoarse from crying Poor, crazy old man No one heard his cry. Brenda Lancaster Gordon The toybox lies open and still And somehow the shadows somehow Loom larger than life The young tin soldier stands at attention Waiting for his young master to come The rusty wind-up train Weeps tin tears I pick up a dog-eared book And glance at the dog on its cover Smile contently And hurl the book into nowhere. The lights are out. 73 Brenda Lancaster The Journey I went for a journey to find myself, In the darkness of my mind. I left my love, my heart, my home, And future far behind. I walked the narrow edge of time, Where life does not go on. Everything was unsteady, Like the legs of a new-born fawn. The journey lasted many years. And still my mind ran on. Until suddenly I was surprised For I returned where I started from. It matters not where you ran away, Be it near or be it far. Just search the darkness of your mind, And you'll discover who you are. Roger Stevens HER The tangled forest green, the crystal ornaments, the distant future. Fragments of her future Come floating down like lone gulls, slow white haunting. Circling in an endless ballet. And I, and I wish upon castles and ice cream And foreign movies and she, and she wishes Upon foreign movies and ceiling blocks. And tommorrow's Magic carpets. With doves and dogs and all the wallpaper She can handle. Brenda Lancaster 74 ODE TO THE GIRLS' X-C Putting it on, out in the trail, These girls we've seen them sail. Not complaining, just truckin' it on. Showing everyone the way, Women's Lib is here to stay. Girl's Cross Country at M.A. is born. In 74 they'll speed away, Another victory, another day. They'll put the girls right in their place. To Schenck and Lee they'll go, Dover, Dexter, Orono. They'll come home from another winning race. We shall cheer again and again, We shall watch the run and win, Even when you tie we'll raise a fuss. But our only hope and dream, Is you're not as good as you seem, Or soon you will be going and beating us.
