There are many differences be- tween my Costa Rican school and Mattanawcook School. This year will be a great experience for me. I knowing a lot of things about the United States and especially about the people. In this school I have found a lot of friends and stupen- dous teachers. Really it's a small school and town, but this is ad- vantage because I will do my work better. These three first months I didn't tell you too much about my country because I had to study harder and had not a very good pronunciation, but I expect later to explain you more about my country and my people. I have found also found a great welcome and a great friendship; you have caused me a great impression and admiration. My viewpoints not always will be the same as yours, but try to understand why you do some things a certain way. I will be grateful to you and, when I'll come back I’ll tell the great experiences that I have with you and the great heart you have. Walk together, talk together O ye people of the earth Then and only then, shall you have peace. Thank you very much, Rodelgo Brenes (Rudy) Never-to-be forgotten bonds stretch from Lin- coln to Latin America. Rudolpho Brenes, our first A .F .S. exchange student from Costa Rica has taught us much about life in Latin America. Rudy will be long remembered as the A .F .S. student who was so friendly to everyone. The Seniors are very proud to have had him in their class. Adding another nutty relative, a visiting dignitary Elizabeth wants desperately to impress, some boys” from the firehouse, a maid with a voice like a siren, and an overdone, wealthy do-gooder. Spiced with a few criminal activities and a constable who always gets his man--even if it is the wrong one. Placed behind warm footlights for one evening and--There you are! We sure had a full house and a grateful audience. Besides sponsoring the Magazine Drive and a basketball game with the Harlem Dip- lomats, the Council has organized a school store which has been very successful. At present, we hope to sponsor the annual Winter Carnival and Ball. By selling all con- cessions and requesting permission for the use of the school, we are attempting to better regulate the financial status of our extracurricular activities. A mellow smile throughout the wintry air, Now o'er the frozen earth the loud winds run And snows are sifted o'er the meadows bare. Please smile upon the brown and leafless trees Before the weeks when winter wreaths are cast Upon the velvet flower that in the breeze Nods, lonely for her beauteous race to last. Give forth a sunny day in which the bee May bumble by the hedge that lines the way, And let the cricket chirp beside the tree, And men delight to linger by the bay. Just one rich smile and we will try to bear That wintry frost, that cold November air. --Donnie Worcester ODE TO THE SUN I walked along the cold and snow sidewalk, The sun was spilling down through snow-bound trees. There was no one with whom I wished to talk, I only felt the sharpness of the breeze. And as I walked my sorrows overcame me, I tried to smile, but the smile turned into tears. My soul and heart cried out in pain within me, With the agony of unforgotten years. But over me the sun still shone so brightly. It made me feel that better says would come. And now, today, I think of you more lightly, Because my heart was set free by the sun. Yes, now are gone the heartaches and the pains, And just a muted memory remains. --Darlene Ledger ON TIME The minutes of that glorious day have gone But yet, although I wish they had not passed, It is for me much mightier to move on Whilst treasuring memories when I know they'll last A smile, a kiss, a word still lingers long. Oh, touchless time, why can't you seem to see The powers that you hold yet make ne mourn? Yes, how I wish the past were yet to be! It is like this for every deep-loved date. How one becomes absolved unknowingly Then quickly finds that time has turned to fate And all that once was his no more can be. Learning this lets life become less mean. For time may not be changed but merely seen. --Jane McCormick Christmas Citer ary (1966) Christmas 1966 At, last, the morn on which Christ came is here! The streets are silent, muffled by the snow. A day that in times past has brought great cheer Has planted meanings, leaving them to grow. Excited little voices fill the air. They wonder how their mom can sleep so long. Doesn't she know that Santa has been there? Can two anxious youngsters both be worng? They imagine stacks of gifts around the tree, But soon remember what mom has said-- Because their daddy fights to keep them free, The gifts they get will be of love, instead. So as you celebrate this day of mirth, Remember those who strive to save this earth. --Valorie O'Brien Our Standard-- Red, White, Blue-- The colors to which we've been true. In may a battle and war Our men have kept high this symbol. That stands for our freedom -- The greatest gift of all. --Melody Ireland CHRISTMAS SPIRIT To the little boy who tramps the street With tattered clothes and cold bare feet, Who finds it hard to stay alive And waits for succor to arrive, I give this toy in memory Of all the joy it brought to me. I hope that he will soon achieve The right to give and to recieve. --Robert Jordan THE DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS 'Twas the day after Christmas, when all through the house Not a chair was in place, not even the couch; The stockings were laid on the floor without care. In proof that St. Nicholas once had been there. When out in the living room arose such a clatter, I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter. To the Christmas tree I flew like a flash; I threw out my arms in hopes to ward off a crash. The kitten on top of the poor worn-out tree Was a picture I'm glad no one else could see; I was too late; for when I appeared. On the floor was a kitten and a tree that was smeared. I looked at the mess, and in my eye was a tear; But I stopped and thanked God that Christmas only comes once a year. --Elaine Clifford 101 Sonnets If often you find says are filled with gray And flowers turen a dark inky blue, It could be it's not them--but it's you! This recipe might help to make you gay. To make a day as happy as can be Start out with sunshine from the sky above And sprinkle with some drops of youthful love. At least this is what someone told me. But I, because I am so very bold. I had to add the spice that I like best, The one that makes my day just filled with zwst, A spice that isn't often brought or sold. It's made inside, not grown on distant isles. Just simply move your lips up-- That's it--SMILE! --Connie Clark Zhe Wild Death When death does come to steal the life away From the gay, bright young or feebled old, The light must go and darkness come to stay Where breath was choked by fingers stiff and cold. In innocence the child now lies content While darknest death purrs softly at the door, But aged dying looks back where he went Wond'ring what for him this darkness holds in store. But in that time when summer's heat recedes And chilly winter winds do start to blow, The multicolored rustling leaves are seen; Apart of death that few do really know. We think of death as cold and black as night, But fall is death, and fall's a lovely sight. --Claudette Fogg The dark and dreary cloud hang overhead And cast their gloomy shadows down below. Oh, that the cheery sun were shining instead, Sending out her warm and wonderful glow. A radiant glow that has the power To lighten this heavy, heartbroken spirit; To soothe and caress it with warmth by the hour; To envelop it with happiness; to cheer it. But the dreary clouds hang on, persist. The sadden the already broken soul. It seems eternity before the mist Parts and lets the sun take its toll. But soon another day rolls round the bind, And this depressing atmosphere will end. --Rhonda Trott 102 Where Me the Seniors of Evelyn Alley Ricker College Gerald Arthurs Armed Services Eva Bennett Gorham State College Phyllis Blake Married Robert Brown U. of M. Particular attention must be given to that hectic day, October, 20, 1966, when you all so kindly allowed your classes to be interrupted for a day of pictures. To the graduating class of 1967, best of luck in all your future endeavors. To the Pine Needles Staff of 1967, a heartfelt gratitude is expressed for your co-operation, faithfulness, and willingness to work in giving to Mattanawcook Academy the best yearbook ever. Special mention must be given to your staff officers in get- ting all materials ready. To one and all at M.A., we express our gratitude for your assistance you have given your yearbook staff in producing the Pine Needles, 1967. Your advisors, Peter J. Lucas Janice Y. Theriault 106 As editor of the Pine Needles of Mattanawcook Academy, I would like to con- clude the 1967 yearbook with these words. The year 1966-1967 has been one composed of excitement, joy, laughter, learning, and dreams of the future. We have tried to capture memories to be cherished by all for many years to come. For some, this is the end of four wonderful years; for others, it is just the beginning. We, the staff of the 1967 Pine Needles, have attempted to preserve some of the events of the past year with pictures and words centered around our theme The Heavenly Years. Many people have contributed to the making of this book. As editor I would like to express my appreciation for the help and co-operation that was given by the Pine Needles Staff. I would also like to thank our advisors, Mr. Lucas and Miss Theriault, for all the assistance they have given us in the preparation of this book. I appreciate the opportunity that I have had in serving the school as editor of the 1967 yearbook. This was a privilege for which I feel greatly honored and an experience which I will treasure in years to come. Sincerely your editor, (1967) cr 107 a Lindaj Patty Bonnie to SCHOOL SONG Hail Alma Mater! Colors maroon and gray. We'll sing our praises And stand by you always.
