Football Record wise the Lynx were futile in their attempts to bring a winning season to Mat- tanawcook; however, due to the tremendous response to Coach Webber's August 21 call for candidates, the future looks very promising. Sixty-two hopefuls, four letter- men among them, turned out for the first practice at Cobb Field. After four weeks of pre-school double session practices, Webber had a 30 man varsity plus a 26 man Fresh- man squad chosen. The Frosh played a five game schedule while the varsity played in regular L. E.C. competition. The following players received letters: D. Barker, R. Bowers, D. Brown, W. Crock- er, D. Edgecomb, M. Gerry, J.Gifford, J. Goding, K. Hanscom, G. Hilman. D. Hurd, V. Linquist, J. Moody, R. Murchinson, G. Osborn, P. Shedd, D. Shorey, P. Smith, P. Thibodeau, J. Thomas. Cheerleading —r Left to tight: L. Hanscom, G. Osborn, R. Miller, V. Lindquist, W. Crocker, Coach Fletcher, J. Thomas, D. Brown, D. Smith, M. Webster, M. St. Thomas. G. Clay and R. Jenkins, Managers. Varsity After an opening season defeat, the Lynx ran up three straight wins over formidable contestants and at Christmas intermission held a four and two record. The loss of Mike St. Thomas proved costly to the basketball hopes for the Lynx, however. As they re- turned from vacation, they lost three straight to ACI and Calais, and Bucksport, then tripped Dover to keep their tournament hopes alive. A two game losing streak, broken up by a two game winning spread, and five straight losses, closed out one of the most disappointing seasons in many years in Lincoln. Lack of team co-ordination hindered Lynx advancement and hopes of a tourney birth faded when the squad dropped a two point decision to E. Millinocket late in the season. Don Brown, Bill Crocker, Vern Lindquist, Ron Miller, Gary Osborn, and Merritt Webster will be lost to graduation this year, but with the return of Mike St. Thomas, Joe Thomas, Dan Smith, and Bud Hanscom, the Lynx will have a strong contender for a tourney spot. Merritt Webster led the Lynx scoring attack with 218 points while Gary OsBorn, Bud Hanscom, Bill Crocker, and Mike St. Thomas with 195, 112, 105, and 92 points re- spectively, were second, third, fourth and fifth in that order. Left to right: Coach Doughty, J. Jordon, E. Ireland, R. Hanely, D. Aiken, D. Smith, T. Phinney, R. Smith, R. Bowers, T. Smith, P. Blake, G. Clay, Mgr. Jayvees With only a ten game schedule, the Jayvees collected valuable experience in some very close contests. Their four win six loss record certainly is not symbolic of the real season the squad had. Their losses to Bucksport and Old Town by a single basket could have gone either way as could the five and six point defeats handed them by Greenville and Dexter respectively. Despite their losing record, prospects for future varsity positions were good as Ron Smith with 116 points and Dan Smith with 105 points set the scoring pace for the squad. Coach Doughty is to be commended on a job well done. D. Bates, R. Coleson, N. Smith, L. Bowers, J. Renaud, C. Pease, C. Joy. J. V. Cheerleading Projectionists Left to right: David Hall, Pat Dicker, Ann Birmingham. Freshman Basketball Team Left to right: Coach Webb, S. Freeman, Jerome Clair, S. McCormick, M. Gerry, D. Whitney, W. Butterfield, C. Whitten, R. Bowker, Mgr. D. Littlefield. The newly organized Freshman Team enjoyed a good season. They compiled a 5-5 record overall. The newly-organized team seemed to do well for their first start and we sincerely hope that they will do better next year. FRONT ROW, Left to right: C. Stratton, Q. Ryder, G. Graham, C. Scanlon, D. O’Brien, C. Morrill, M. Al- drich, P. MacCafferty, D. Bates, E. McGlaughlin. SECOND ROW: D. Gray. B. Goding, D. Edgecomb, J. Butterfield, G. Brown, R. Williams, L. Cunningham, D. Shedd, and Mr. Gatcomb. THIRD ROW: B. Crocker, H. Dennison, V. Hawkins, R. Tomilson, D. Hurd, T. Washburn, C. White. Ski Team The ski team's main squad consisted of eight regular members with two alternates chosen from the freshman candidates. Lack of snow caused cancellation of all meets during January, two in February, and one in March. In the State B Competition, Lincoln placed fifth while in the Seventh Annual Ski Tournament at Guilford, the squad placed second. Prospects for next season are very good as Doug Shedd, the team's captain, is the only senior member on the squad. A promising group of newcomers to the girls' ski team provide extra strength for high hopes of an excellent competitor in future girls' ski meets. Left to right: FRONT ROW - Coach Webber, G. Hillman, M. Whalen, H. Whittem, P. Smith, R. Smith, R. Miller, and Manager J. Edwards. SECOND ROW - Coach Hlister, M. St. Thomas, R. Cobb, J. Moody, R. Bowers, D. Edgecomb, and Manager D. Hall. THIRD ROW - R. Hawkins, W. Wilson, R. Cote, J. Jordon, T. McLaughlin, R. Boone, E. Ireland, T. Smith, and Manager A. Lyons. Baseball By compiling nine wins while losing only four, Mattanawcook's baseball squad of 1961 has become tops in the school's history of this fine sport. A great deal of credit is due Coaches Hlister and Webber who molded a team that beat some of the best teams in this area, splitting with Brewer, East Millinocket, Pe- metic, and Howland, while turning back Lee three times and Millinocket twice.
