The 1959 Pine Needles Mattanawcook Academy Lincoln, Maine We, the seniors of Mattanawcook Academy, dedicate with pride this 1959 Pine Needles” to Mrs. Letitia S. Clay who has faithfully and unselfishly taught us, advised us, and counseled us for the past four years. rhois st © 3 JOHN R. PARKER, B.A., M.A., University of Maine SEATED: R. Savage, N. Coburn, L. Student Council The first meeting of the Student Council was held September 9, 1958, with Sally Gilpatrick presiding. Other officers were Ronda Savage, Vice President; Rita Whit- ten, Secretary. The two main projects of the Student Council were sponsoring the annual Winter Carnival and revising the Mattanawcook Academy Handbook. The Council worked hard to make both of these projects a success. A minor project, also sponsored by the Student Council, was dancing at noon. This dancing, after having been dis- continued for a few years, was very well attended and proved to be a big success. Natalie Coburn, Ronda Savage, and Rita Whitten attended the State Student Council Convention held at Deering High School in Portland. They gained many good ideas, which they presented to the M. A. Student Council. At last year’s regional Student Council Convention, Rita Whitten was elected First Vice President. We attended the regional convention again this year, after having been changed to the Northern District. Let me see - what did happen? SEPTEMBER 13 - We played our first football game of the season at Orono. We lost to them that day, 21-0. Many of us discovered we had wet feet at some of our games - and a good case of laryngitis too. OCTOBER 2 and 3 - Teachers' Convention gave all of us a few days to rest. A Typical Game at Mattanawcook Academy SEPTEMBER 24 - Ah! Freshman reception came. There was plenty of fun in store for all. Bewildered Freshman? Dressed in her Sunday best she ventured onto Mattanawcook Academy school grounds. What have we here? I believe this boy must have been a Freshman also. He looks as though he might be a studious boy. Just take a peek at all those books under his arm! MAGAZINE DRIVE HOME ROOM CAPTAINS - FIRST ROW: M. Wilson, D. Dion, L. Poole, N. Coburn, P. Dickinson. B. Gulesian. SECOND ROW: N. Plourde, S. The Lynx wound up in Sixth place in the Little Eight Con- ference with a record of two wins and five losses. Under the direction of Coach R. Miles and assistant coach J. Sidel, thirty candidates started a hard, disappointing season. Eleven lettermen, of whom seven were seniors, three were juniors, and one was a sopho- more, were fighting for their starting positions. Even though the Lynx lost five games, they hustled and fought hard all through the sea'son. They usually outplayed their op- ponents but they were outscored in most of their games. Sixteen Lynx received letters. They were: C. Hatch, R. Michaud, B. Moody, G. Noddin, D. Conlogue, R. Ridley, N. Littlefield, R. Steeves, C. Sutherland, D. Dill, B. Walsh, C. Towle, D. Moody, R. Van Sickle, R. Arthurs, and H. Whitten. With nine returning lettermen coming back, Mattanawcook should look forward to a good season next year. Varsity Basketball Compared with the last few years, the varsity this year had a poor season since they didn't win half of their games. Only five of the varsity squad were on last year's team and not one of these players earned a letter last year. Coach Fletcher's Lynx compiled a record of seven wins and eleven losses. The biggest win of the season was over East Millinocket. a team which Lincoln beat 56-55 in an overtime. M.A. wound up in second place in the Northern Penobscot League with a 4-2 record. Lincoln has four lettermen coming back next year, a year to watch as only three members are graduating from this year's team. Letter winners were Reynald Michaud, Barry Libby, Clair Sutherland, Duane Moody, Robert Tenan, Merritt Webster and Manager Robert Ridley. SCORE BOARD SCORE BOARD NCOLN OPPONENTS 45 Dexter 60 56 E. Basketball The Jayvees did not have what would be termed a successful season, record-wise; but it was successful in fulfilling the purpose for which it was set up. The team compiled a season's record of two wins and eighteen losses. Although the wins came seldom, the team hustled through the season. Prospects for next year's varsity look good, and the experience, which those boys received who don't make the grade, is bound to improve the J.V. team. Under the direction of Mr. Gatcomb, Captain David Hall and his team competed in three meets. Two of these meets were held at Millinocket in competition with Millinocket, Guilford, and Fort Kent at one, and Bangor and Millinocket at the other. The third was at Klngsfield.
