Pine Needles Published Annually by the Student Body of Mattanawcook Academy Dedication We, the class of 1958, dedicate this edition of THE PINE NEEDLES to Mr. William Fletcher, our basketball coach and physical education director, for his unselfish devotion of time and ef- fort to the students of Mattanawcook Academy. Not only has he molded basketball players; but he has molded citizens, the character of which the Academy and the town may be proud. ADMINISTRATION - JOHN R. PARKER, B. A., M. A., Algebra Standing: Mr. Parker, D. Moody, B. Barker, D. Buck, M. Wilson, J. Trask, C. Hatch, K. Howe, T. Tash. Seated: S. Gilpatrick, G. Cole, R. Whitten, B. Coburn, R. Coffin, R. Holmes, B. Moody. Student Council Tile first meeting of the Student Council was held September 24, 1957, with Roger Holmes presiding as president. Other officers were Sally Gilpatrick, Vice President; Ray Coffin, Secretary. The two main projects of the Student Council were the annual Winter Carnival and the Highway Safety Program. The Council worked very hard to promote, successfully both of these projects. The Safety program, which was something new in our school, required a great deal of work by the Council in setting up committees and trying to give this program a strong foundation for coming years. Bruce Barker, Roger Holmes, Ray Coffin, and Mr. Parker, the advisor, all attended the State Student Council rally held at Brunswick. They picked up a lot of ideas to improve our own Student Council. Byron Moody is State Vice President. The regional Student Council convention was held here at M. A. Present were a large number of dele- gates from other schools belonging to the association. Our Student Council worked hard to make the rally the success it was. David Buck is the regional president. Baseball With the first signs of spring, the air was filled with little white guided missiles - at least most of them were guided. Yes, baseball season was in full swing. The call for the first practice session was issued by Coach Fletcher on April 4. He was greeted by twenty-five eager boys, all anxious to get to work. With seven lettermen it looked as if M. A. would have a successful season. Using his veterans, lettermen, Walcott, Holmes. Clair, Clifford, Moody, Parker and Boober as a foundation, the Coach fielded a fine team, which ended the season with a 2 - 6 record. The team with the exception of Boober was a little short on pitching material, which accounts for the record. Next year should be a fine one for the Lynx as they will have quite a few lettermen. Receiving letters were: Moody, Coffin, Boober. Holmes, Ludden, Walcott, Clair, Parker, Michauld, Clifford, Albert. Those elected were: Presi- dent, Reynold Michaud; Vice President, Alton Nute; and Secretary-Treasurer, Sally Gilpatrick. A Ski Team was chosen from the Club and they participated in the annual events at Millinocket. One of the main projects of the Ski Club was to supervise all of the events of the Winter Carnival. Fourth row: Assistant Coach A. Thomas, R. Ridley, Assistant Manager B. Gordon, Manager B. Barker, Coach R. Miles. Football That old August sun was really hot, especially to the boys of the M. A. football team as they went through their paces under the capable direction of their Coach, Roger Miles. There were a lot of bumps, bruises, bloody noses and tired boys, but this was all part of getting in shape for the coming football sea- son, which certainly would be a tough one for the Lynx. Reporting for the team were six lettermen, all ready to fight to hold their starting spots and twenty-five other boys all eager to gain a top spot either from one of the lettermen or to nail down one of the five positions left by graduation. It was rough and tumble football all year, during which the team showed a lot of hustle and spirit. Led by their Co-Cap- tains, Crocker and Holmes, they won 3 and lost 4, and finished fourth in the Little 8. The best game played by the Lynx was against Belfast which they won 24-0. The most disappointing was the game which was won by their arch-rivals in football, Orono, 37-18. All in all, it was a good season with the prospects for next year looking even better as they will have 10 lettermen returning. Receiving letters were: Holmes, Crocker, Buck, Nute, Murchison, Walcott, Clair, Cox, Worster, Barker, Hatch, Moody, Noddin, Con- logue, Littlefield, Ridley, Sutherland, Moody, Crocker, Witten. Varsity Basketball With the return of 5 lettermen in the persons of Holmes, Walcott, Coffin, Ludden and Clair, Coach Fletcher had a sound foundation around which to build a very success- ful team. The record alone is enough to show just how successful they were as they hustled and fought their way to an 18-4 record and a berth in the tournament. Offensively, they were a slick-working outfit most of the time, passing and setting up their plays with a great deal of accuracy. Defensively, they were very sound. In at least 5 games it was defense alone that won for the Lynx. In Holmes, Walcott and Coffin, the Lyns had a formidable trio. All three topped the 6-foot mark and were capable of scoring a lot of points, as is shown by their game aver- ages. The back court chores were divided among four players: Ludden, Gilpatrick, Clark and Michaud, all possessing good speed, a lot of hustle, and a fine shooting eye. The Lynx, showing a lot of fight and desire to win finished the regular season with a record of 15 wins and 3 losses. In the play-offs they were opposed by Lee and Schenck. Both teams were upset and fought on even terms with the Lynx, until the last quarter, when the Lynx pulled away for the victory. . Tournament LYNX VS. BAR HARBOR The Lynx, seated number two in the tournament because of their brilliant showing during the season, were pitted against a very fine Bar Harbor team, which many thought would upset the Lynx. But the Lynx came through with their best game of the season and defeated the Seasiders 61-40. LYNX VS. GREENVILLE In the Semi-finals the Lynx were opposed by a small but speedy team from Greenville. It was another one of those nights for the Lynx and they could never seem to get rolling. Despite the loss of one of their key players on fouls in the first half and two more in the last period, the Lynx never stopped fighting. A fitting climax to a terrific season for the Lynx. To give the Freshman and Sophomore players, who could not make the Varsity, a chance to learn more about the game and to develope their individual talents. Mr. Miles did a very fine job and was always willing to help any of the boys who needed it. A few of the Jayvees will be playing on the Varsity next year and with the experience they have gained, they should do a very fine job. Receiving their numerals were: D. Moody, D. Steeves, C. High in the mountains Sat aged Winter, Clothed in shimering robes Of White And silver. And looked at what he had done. For, For below him Played the children, Laughing, Jesting, And aged Winter was pleased. Deep, Deep in the forest Searched the deer. Furtively pawing at the frozen ground. And Winter. Despairing, Saw that there was no food. Many, Many joyous people Sat before a fire. They were happy people. Laughing, Singing, And Winter enjoyed the scene. Dark, Dark shadows formed In the barren room. Someone was dying and the Bitter, Crackling Cold made Winter shudder. Frosty. Frosty air hung In a cloud above him As Winter contemplated The joy And sorrow That he had created. Johanna De Courcey The river has an undefinable attraction for me. I like to take a good canoe and shoot the foaming, rock chocked rapids. The thrill of rushing water as it roars over falls and through the high-banked cuts is hypnotic. The cold spray hitting my face and the sudden current changes of the eddies and backwaters induce a sensation of danger and excit- ment. The canoe is a living creature as it slips down a set of rips. I must fight for control. A quick jab with the pole and the canoe glides between the huge jutting boulders of the Boar's Head and plunges over the lip of the falls. There is the familiar moment of hesitation as the canoe is suspended between the elements; no longer a creature of the water, but unable to support itself on the air. The canoe snaps quickly downward and drives its bow into the huge wave below the falls. I fight to regain my balancf as the canoe struggles to rise out of the ominous grip of the river. The gunwhales surge above the foam and we are safe, the canoe and I, on the deadwater. I lay down the steel-tipped pole used in the quick water and take a paddle. The canoe responds easily to the strokes of the paddle and we move faster than the current as we slide downstream. After a few minutes I cease my paddling, take a fly rod, and begin casting for the trout that are rising after the hatch of mayflies. There is a slight ripple as a trout sucks in my flay and I res- pond with a quick snap of my wrist. The trout breaks water in a flash of bright orange and flying spray. Soon I have half a dozen brightly speckled trout in my creel and I again begin paddling. As I near my campsite I hear a splashing in the bogan over to my right. A large bull moose stands glisten- ing and black with a clump of water weeds in his mouth. I reach my camp, run the canoe up onto the gravel bar, and unload my dunnage. I put the dunnage inside my tent and start a fire to prepare supper over. As I cook my supper of bacon, trout, bread, and coffee the darkness creeps down the ridge and ghosts slowly over the river. The stars begin to shine as I finish my meal. I sit relaxed; listening to the whispering of the river and the occasional scream of the owl in the pines in back of my tent. Here I am happy. David Buck Compliments of CARNEY'S CLOTHING STORE NATURE The beauty of nature Begins in the spring With color and beauty In every living thing. The flowers then Begin to bloom And God's plants Begin to sprout Showering everything with sweetness On land and sea throughout. Blossoms are at their peak In the summer The leaves are all a glow With fascination. I see this And why. I do not know. The autumn leaves begin to fall The beauty is fading away And with a heart despondent Here's what I say: Cold bitter winter takes over But here's something you should know. The beauty of Nature Is everywhere you go Whether it's high on the treetops Or buried beneath the snow.
