With a 6-2 record for the 1952 season the Pirates won a co-championship with the Taft Greyhounds, to whom they lost their only conference game. The Pirates opened their season with a bang by coming from behind and defeating St. Josephs’ of Browns¬ ville in the last two minutes 22 to 18. After two rain-outs the Pirates manhandled Miller B of Corpus Christi by the score of 25 to 6. On the next Friday night at George West, the Pirates started their conference season by defeating the George West Longhorns to the tune of 14 to 9. Again the following week the Pirates continued their winning ways by defeating the Three Rivers Bull¬ dogs at Mathis 26 to 19. On October 19th the Pirates defeated the Rockport Pirates, another conference foe, by the score of 26- 13 even though seven touchdowns were called back on us. The following Friday the Pirates suffered their first defeat at the hands of Premont, a non-conference foe, 49 to 19. Then one week later the Pirates lost their first conference game to the T aft Greyhounds by the score of 45 to 20. In this game the Pirates led the first half 20 to 6. Two weeks later the Pirates unleashed their pent-up fury by defeating their arch-rivals, the Bishop Badgers, in Bishop 16 to 6. So ended one of the most successful seasons in Mathis Pirate History.
