Keith assumed the pos¬ ition of Superintendent of Mathews County School System in July, 1969. He holds a B.S. Degree from Lincoln Memorial Uni¬ versity and a M.A. Degree from Goerge Peabody College. Mr. Keith served in the army in World War II and the Korean War. He has had an extensive background in edu¬ cation, having served as Principal at Black- water High School in Lee County and Prin¬ cipal of Hampton High School and at Buck- roe Jr. High School. He served a Purchas¬ ing Agent for Hampton city School system before coming to Mathews County. Mr. Keith has identified himself with many civic organizations. He is keenly interested in young people, and is rendering a real service to the educational system of Mat¬ hews County. Mr. William M. Gabbel assumed the position of Principal at Mathews High School in July 1969. He holds a B.S. De¬ gree from East Tennessee State University and has done graduate work at William and Mary College. He recieved a M.Ed from the University of Virginia. Mr. Gabbel served with 5th Division during World War II. He was wounded in France. He taught Social Studies and Basic Business in School- field High School in Danville, Virginia, being chairman of the Business Education Department. There is a club for everything. A special time is set aside every Monday morning to take care of these meetings and activities. A. The S.C.A. this year has sponsored several recrea¬ tion centers, and several South¬ east School assemblies. The or¬ ganization has tried to stimulate school spirit at pep rallies. It also conducted a door decorating contest at Xmas. time. Mrs. Sadler and Mrs. Moughon are sponsors. Frances Lee Twigg received the highest score and was given the Betty Crocker Medal. During Amer¬ ican Education Week, these future teachers take over the task of teaching for a day. Each year the club raises money for a scholarship fund. This scholarship fund is awarded to some deserving Senior who plans to enter the teaching profession. Mrs. Hudgins and Mrs. Foster are co-sponsors of this club. Through the efforts and good coaching of Miss Green and a fast hardhitting team, the Jackets came in second in the district with an impressive record of five wins and two loses. The overall record was even more impressive with nine wins and three loses. Track Champs A Superb Blue Devil Track Team captured the District Championship and also the State Track Crown. In¬ dividual standouts included Robert Diggs and Jim Mitchem who won the 880 and 440 respectively. A state record shattering 880 relay team consisted of Roy Spriggs, George Mathews, Charles Clarke Jr. , and Linwood Blake. The mile-relay team composed of Kerry Smith, James Mason, Robert Diggs, and Jim Mitchem, was also victorious in the State Meet. Wayne Carter made a Worthy contribution at State placing in three events. Mr. Lewis coached this fine team. This is an annual custom at Mathews High. The chosen select their own escorts for this lovely occasion. The stage was beautifully decorated by the Queen, Maid of Honor, Ladies in Waiting and Escorts. Prior to coronation and program, supper was served b y the P. T. A. The program was well received and many declared this to be the most successful May Day ever.
