This year the Beta Club gave an assembly comparing schools one hundred years ago with schools of today. It gave Christmas Baskets to a needy family and a ping-pong table to the SCA. In the autumn of 1949 a ijew eighth grade enter¬ ed M. H. S. Those who were in this class had worked hard for seven years to reach high school. They did¬ n’t realize that five of the happiest, hardest and most enjoyable years were ahead. As freshmen they were in the homerooms of Mr. George Matzner and Mr. Charles Skinner. The class elected Audrey White president, Yvonne Armistead secretary, Mary Joan Anderton vice president and Harold Diggs treasurer. Under the guidance of Miss Nellie Callis and Mrs. Myrtle Matthews during their sophomore year they elected Yvonne Armistead president, Diane Hudgins secretary, Ed Tucker treasurer, and Earl Soles report¬ er. When they became juniors, they had work to do. The Junior-Senior Prom was up to them now. To get under way they chose Ed Tucker president, Earl Soles vice president, Betty Shipley secretary, Alvin Knight treasurer, and Marilyn Townsend reporter. Mr. Fred¬ rick Schoen, Mrs. Bernice White, and Mrs. Harold Hudson helped them with the big job. The Prom final¬ ly became a reality on May 15. Stardust was the theme, and much to the surprise of the juniors it was a perfect evening. It finally happened! They became seniors, but it really didn’t feel any different. They elected officers for the last time and realized that they would be do¬ ing many other things for the last time as well. Earl Soles was elected to lead the class as president, Archie Owens became vice president, Alvin Knight treasurer, Yvonne Armistead, secretary and Virginia Haynes re¬ porter, Miss Roberta Davis was their sponsor. Marilyn Townsend was chosen May Queen and Bet¬ ty Shipley Maid of Honor for the annual May Day held on May 12. The year was coming to an end now plans for com¬ mencement were being made. Dr. Betnard Lipscomb was selected to give the Baccalaureate address on June 6 . The class decided on a gift, and at Commencement, it presented the school with a tape-recorder and record player. On June 4 the class had a picnic at Cherry Point. What fun! June 7 finally arrived! It was both the be¬ ginning and the end. The diplomas and awards were presented. Harriet Armistead received the first scho¬ lastic award and Yvonne Armistead received the second scholastic award. Betty Shipley was awarded the gen¬ eral excellence honors. Jack Maxwell and Estelle Adams received top awards in athletics, and Virginia Haynes won the Merit System Award. This class had finished its work at M. H. S. It was probably the last time they would be together, but as youth always does, they parted with their hopes in the future and their faith in God. 12
