Mater Dei stu- dents were confronted with new ideas and changes which, in some cases, broke tradition. The Homecoming, for instance, was com- pacted into one weekend. There were new teachers and a new head football coach. The school newspaper suggested controversial sub- jects to the students through the editorial page. The Seniors wanted the prom to be held outside of school, and a fruit sale was organized to defray the expense of the two new school buses. In both football and basketball, school spirit climaxed with the Kinght’s battle against Carlyle. Girl’s softball was introduced into the sport’s schedule, and theatre-in-the-round was initiated by the Drama De- partment. You, the students, have made this yearbook. Your reactions to the changing conditions were not always verbalized. They were re- flected, however, through your facial expressions of fear, anger, joy, tension, confusion, boredom, or gratitude. You lived the year, you responded, you reacted. We have to blaze a trail for the classes to come, just as it has been done for us. We are in a time of uncertainty, but we are open to be creative. We have to strive for ourselves and for our brothers. We must open our eyes and see what is going on around us. Now is the time for it and if we do not grasp it, our energy is lost. Just going by what we see, we are still like blind men. We have to listen and search for reality. Peoples’ feelings are not always an expression. Our first reaction may be false because we do not look for true feelings. We must intrepret facial expressions and reactions. The 1975-76 Knight is intended to help you relive your high school days and to assist you in accounting for where you have been. We are always asking for reasons and wondering why the sun must sometimes be covered with clouds, why colorful autumn leaves must fall and die. God creates and takes away but just as in nature, he returns life season after season. -Author Unknown- 7« 1R uuz t Sefite tt4er 20, 952 IK , 20, 975 How little did we know As we watched our little boy grow, How soon in accidental death He’d be called for his last breath. In all his works and play he ran And grew into a fine young man. Years shall pass with many a tear Wishing if only he could be here. Our children are our greatest pleasure, They are by far our only treasure. Now as we go on our way And live our lives from day to day, One thing so greatly subdues our joy— The Loss of Our Darling Boy. Time will pass, as will the years Fond memories reminiscing, with countless tears. I'm still hoping his life didn’t cease, And praying he rests in heavenly peace. The numerous clubs and organizations at Mater Dei High School provide students with many opportunities to display their talents and their leadership qualities. These organizations enable stu- dents to get involved, to become participants in community as well as school activities. They provide students with greater educational and growth experiences. Also, these extra-curricular activities help students to associate better with fellow classmates and faculty mem- bers. In this way, these activities serve as sources of enjoyment and as a guideline for the future. It has been a time of turmoil, tears, and toil as well as accomplishments, self-gratitude, and laughter. We have been challenged to open our minds to new ideas. These new concepts have confronted us. Some were obstacles that were faced and overcome. Others were bridges to bigger and brighter goals. What has been done will never be erased only surpassed by other classes. Through the year we have matured and we have grown. We have graduated! Kach of us will never again be a freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior. The year has just been one small stepping stone in our lives. Next year will bring dif- ferent dreams, greater achievements, and new horizons. 140 161 “Time it was, and what time it was, it was ... A time of innocence, a time of confidence. Preserve your memories; They’re all that’s left of you.” (Simon and Garfunkel) As the year comes to an end, many become sentimental and some frightened. High School is the final step we take in our adolescent days. With the end comes a time for fond last looks and farewells. But we never can say good-bye to the happy and hurting memories of the year. We make new friends and keep the old, because one is silver and the other gold. Ahead of all of us we have a future filled with challenges, ex- citement, and growth. 164 React ’75 is part of an evolutionery process yearbooks across the nation are undergoing. Modernization and contemporary approaches are trends yearbooks face. Many changes have occurred not all noticeable. We believe that this transformation is a step toward improve- ment. We hope that you will be able and willing to accept this change. React was designed to make an impact upon the students of Mater Dei High School. It reflects new concepts that have taken place this year; it has given us the opportunity to re- act along with students to situations and events. .... Many comments have lead to the attitude that a yearbook should retell the school year in a pictorial narration only. In order that a yearbook reflect the past year, it must combine narration and photographs. Photographs will come alive when you first read your book. Memories will become hazy but the narration reopens your mind to your high school years. That is the reason this year’s book contains more narration than previous yearbooks. Ten years from now you will be able to vividly recall and reminisce. A yearbook is an intricate process that requires involvement and dedication on the part of each staff member. While you were out in the sun, we were in the darkroom. When you were out partying, we were at yearbook meetings. After school when everyone else went home, we remained in 504. Crazy? Maybe? But we had the responsibility and challenge of retelling the year. . .... This publication includes the efforts of only a small number of students. We have worked many hours to make this yearbook different, superior, and appealing. There will be some who do not like this book, and others who will accept it with open arms. We have tned and our many efforts will be rewarded by self-satisfaction and your comments. We have reached the end of our endeavors. The final judgement is in your hands. We can only hope that our efforts have not been in vain. Thank you for letting us tell your story. You made it happen. 163 Those little expressions the looks of delight of joy of anger revealed our inner thoughts, showing the direction of our reactions. At M.D. there was one on every face and each held a different meaning. They were at school and at home, trying to find someone who would listen. They were at all athletic events, on the faces of the crowds, wanting to win. having to win. And on the faces of the athletes trying to make this belief of the fans a reality. Finally (hey were on faces of the teachers, trying to inbed facts which last a lifetime. As you continue to live, spread your knowledge don't be selfish with yourself. Like a dandelion puff with the help of the wind spreads itself and makes more, we have to help others grow, influence their decisions, and believe in them. 16« Humphrey Photography 'VV fH0 .
