The Life Of a Student Even though it is a lot of work being a student, with five or six classes to study and do homework for, the extra events and activities that accompany the routine of school makes being a student enjoy- able. The first big event is Homecoming. The student council does a great deal of preparation for this exciting event which is climaxed with the selection of our Homecoming Queen. Most of us belong to at least one club whether it be the French Club, FFA, Speech Team, Knight Staff, FBLA, Lance Staff, or one of the other clubs at Mater Dei. Throughout the year there are always events to keep us happy and busy. The Fall Play, Christmas and Spring Concerts, Ring Ceremony, Fashion Show, and later in the year the Spring Musical and the Prom. Being a student can sometimes be work, but having fun and a lot of good times to- gether is all part of the life of a student at Mater Dei. 11 Spirit Enthusiasm A Knight Victory Highlight Homecoming ’74 A little joke now and then makes working Lance staff bug crawls away with the award for the best car. It stands as an essential factor in molding an in- dividual. Because of this, it has earned our school much recognition. Football initiates the season with many long hours of practice and hard work, creating a rugged team ready for action. By partici- pating on a team, students learn the sig- nificance of teamwork both on and off the field. Running 10 to 20 miles a day paid off for the Cross Country team. For them, winning was the name of the game. Pressures and frustrations were met by this years basketball team. Although tough competition was encountered, the Knights came home with another regional trophy. Winning the regional has almost become a tradition at Mater Dei; this year marking the third consecutive victory. Wrestling, girls’ and boys’ track, baseball, and golf also attract many participants and fans. Even when winning is not the result of a game, fans and cheerleaders do not cease to support the Knights. All in all, sports at M.D. portrays the in- dividual talents and abilities that provide competition and challenges for a Mater Dei Knight. 62 MD Defense Plays It Tough Knight’s Paul Jaeger powers his way for extra yards over Granite City North’s defenders. It is more than five wings and a gymnasium. It is a lot more. Mater Dei is people. It is the people that make Mater Dei what it is .. . people working together under one roof to leam, to teach ... to grow. It is teachers trying diligently to get kids to study, to prepare them for the outside world, if it be col- lege, a job or marriage. It is teenagers trying their best to understand the basics of accounting, how to make a dress, a new language. It is the administration running school, keeping kids in line. It is the cleaning ladies, the cooks, the secre- taries, the janitors, the teachers, and the students. That is what Mater Dei is; peo- ple working together to help, to teach, to understand, to learn ... and most of all, to grow. Administration MR. ROBERT KLOSTFRMANN . .. He knew we’d need the comfort Of an understanding heart To give us strength and courage To make a fresh, new start. He knew we’d need companionship Unselfish . .. lasting ... true. And so God answered the heart’s great need With cherished friends . . . like you. . . . Nothing in life really stays, and its beautiful that they go. They have to go in order for the next thing to come. You can almost add beauty to a thing by accepting that it’s temporary. Barbara Burrow The last event we shared with Sharon was the homecoming-then she had her own homecoming with God. 115 These times we’ve shared together are remembered now only in our minds.
